At 12:45PM Sunday, Whitehall Fire was dispatched to the Mattress Fair on MacArthur Road for a structural fire with entrapment.
People were initially reported trapped in the second floor apartments above the mattress store by police. They got everyone out before the arrival of the F.D.
Deputy Chief Bilder arrived and determined the fire was on the outside of the store in the wall. One line was stretched for a small fire in the wall next to the entrance. Mutual Aid Rescue company 2 and 11 were also dispatched as the F.A.S.T. companies.

Could be department sop. Try not to bash. All our engines carry 1000gals. Our first due doesn't catch the plug either, unless its right near by. Our 2nd or 3rd due does. We also train to be efficient and move with a purpose.

Instead of screaming bloody murder at the 2nd due engine to lay out from the scene, why didn’t the first due engine just lay in? I see this in a lot of videos of Whitehall FD, do they have an SOP that states the first engine must blow past the hydrant and rely on the 2nd due engine to secure a water supply? Doesn’t seem like it’s a fail-safe system.
@skymedic48
@skymedic48 6 жыл бұрын
it's common practice now, at least here where I'm at, that the first due engine shows up and makes a hit on the fire, and the 2nd or 3rd due lays in and brings water. At my department, our engines all carry 1000 gals of water, so, you can make a pretty good hit knowing that water is mere seconds or a couple mins away. Perhaps this department operates the same way.
@VFVFCo68
@VFVFCo68 6 жыл бұрын
firemedic75 and you’re okay with that? I agree you can make a hell of a knock with tank water. However, 9 times out of 10, you’re gonna need more than tank water to fully extinguish and overhaul a structure fire. So why skip that step? You’re only hurting yourself by doing that, especially in a volunteer setting where you can’t be 100% sure that the 2nd due engine is right behind you, or even behind you at all. Next drill night, do a first due lay in drill. Go out of the training site, respond in, drop a guy off at the hydrant, lay your hose, have the guys run the line and simulate an interior attack, make your connections and transition from tank to municipal water. I guarantee you’ll find it’s much easier and safe than trying to blitz it with your tank and frantically calling on the radio to the next engine that’s still 3 miles out.

As an operator im a firm believer on not passing up a hydrant. If i am a first due truck and i have access to the closest hydrant to an incident ill take that hydrant and tell the next Engine CO that im supplying my self. One less step for that 2nd due piece and can grab that back up line with a good man power behind the main attack line. But that's only if that situation present its self. 99% of the time i rather have a truck lay in to me rather than reverse lay. But some situations require that reverse lay. Ive seen streets where im at that you have to back down to drop that connection off due to the roads being congested with cars parked on both sides. As for this incident i would have taken that hydrant and just dropped that line for my self. But that's me, i stead of that Eng Co fighting the flow of traffic to lay that line. Its just to much of a risk IMO.

FDNY we transmit a signal if the 1st due engine can't get a hydrant. That automatically designates 2nd due as responsible for securing a hydrant and stretching supply to the 1st due, who is in position and stretching an attack line. That said, 1st due doesn't pass up a hydrant; this is only if 1st due's hydrant is bad or if the hydrant is so far away it doesn't make sense to not use booster to get a jump on the fire (in NYC that is a virtual impossibility but there are some spots where hydrants are spread out). I don't know if that's what happened here but it does happen.

Soooooo, do we always wait for second due engine companies to pick up a hydrant for the first? Those guys could have had a major problem on their hands if it got through that wall. 6 minutes, no water! even though there was a PILE of machines there. Really lucky that job didn't take off on them, you know, because everyone would have to stop to go get a SCOTT and then go to work. Yikes😱

Probably department sop. Our 2nd or 3rd due engine catch the plug. We carry 1000gals. On every engine. Unless 1st due has a hydrant near by, then they can secure own water.

Seems like a great department. What citizen wouldn’t want a fireman who gets off the truck in just his bunker pants? Or a whole crew that gets off without packs on? Or a crew that takes 5 minutes to get water on the fire when there are people inside? Report of people trapped and I see no primary search being done. Bunch of morons. I feel bad for the people who that department “serves”.

Not sure man. In my department we roll with a 1+5 crew and 2 already put on their SCBA and even masks while driving. They can be in there in 10 seconds. But we might have been doing it wrong all the time. These guys seem way more relaxed than we are. Maybe we should've just been watching fires instead of fighting them. Less stress must surely be good for the blood pressure and stuff...

Bad placement of the ladder they should have went off the side of the building. Also stop traffic all together so no one gets hit

At 8:29 there are several chains hanging down under the fire truck, what are those for? I've seen them on non fire department trucks also.

I'm seeing a lot of criticisms, and admit I am not educated in any way on fire, but right away I noticed all the windows still intact and wondered if there was some backdraft risk under consideration...like maybe if ppl were out they paused action deliberately? of course this does not excuse all the guys who dont have their gear sorted... a perplexing scene for sure

Never want to bust the windows out, that just gives the fire more O2 and makes it more dangerous

Well where do I start, the good part first, they didn't start smashing all the windows, someone was smart enough to realise the fire was in the cladding so it was extinguished quickly. In the UK all pumping appliances carry water so if you turn up first the first thing the driver does is locate the nearest hydrant, where it starts to go wrong, I think the Officer in Charge panicked and called for a '2nd alarm', I have seen this happen before and it's not uncommon, very embarrassing for him, all I can say is he won't be the last do it. He is in charge he should taken charge the moment he got off the appliance instead you could see that everyone was pumped up with adrenaline and not working as a team, this happens when you turn up to a potential 'good' job, its for the OIC to take control and stop this happening. As for the Fire Dept on the whole performed badly, it appears to be due to lack of training and discipline, sorry chaps for being so negative.

You not have to be a fire chief to know when a bunch of guys are not working as a team. People picked at random off the street could have moved with more purpose.

Do you think anyone has a clue what they are really doing. A preconnect should have water in 20 seconds. People should be readdy in SCBA upon arrival. I know where I don't want to run into problems, Whitehall PA.

Just HOW many trucks need to turn up to a fire the size of a wheel bin? And why all the bloody noise? No fire to see. No traffic. No smoke to see. Crew walking around with nothing to do. Clearly emergancy is over before it began: so honk that horn brother, like it's the end of the world! That fire ladder up against the burning section of the building AND right in front of the front door! Surely putting it to one side would be prudent! But no. Someone decides to fight the fire with a stop ladder from underneath. Ok. So why is the first ladder still in the way?

I always wondered. What are those chain-like things hanging from the underside (rear) of some of the fire trucks? I've seen it many times but I have no idea what they are for.
