In this video, we break down the complete timeline of the Three Body Problem series. Keep in mind that this is just a timeline to provide perspective; for a more detailed breakdown of these events, check out the Three-Body Problem playlist linked in the description. The Three Body Problem series, aka the Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy, tells the story of humanity over the course of our existence in the cosmos. The series starts in the modern era and spans out to the end of time. Many significant events also take place before the opening of the story.
We Begin in the common era, which is any time up until the year 2010, all dates in the common era are marked with the epoch “CE” During the common era humankind remained ignorant of the true nature of the cosmos, and on the true nature of what waited even within as short a distance as four lightyears from our solar system.

Timeline correction. Ye Wenjie's first signal is trasmitted in 1971, but the response from Trisolaris is not heard until 1979, that same year Ye Wenjie responds. Thanks everyone that pointed out that FTL drives aren't technically a thing in the series. It would be more accurate to refer to their drives as curvature propulsion engines.

Totally got that FTL = Curvature propulsion. And really, Curvature propulsion results in FTL travel so you're not at all wrong either. Kind of like calling an iPhone a phone.

It serves the same purposes. That's literally what is used in Stat Trek. The warp field bends space and it's the space around the ship, not the ship itself, that travels faster than light. Technically, the Enterprise isn't actually moving when through space when it hit the warp drive.

what i find interesting is the themes of collectivism vs individualism. as the first book starts during communist china and the clashing ideoogies of the cold war, that's an underlying aspect. how humans function as a collective vs actions taken by individuals. humanity was doomed by a single individual, then saved by a single individual (the wallfacer), then undone by the collective. cooperation is necessarity to fight back but also hinders salvation of only a partial group. it takes this social study and applies it to the wider universe. the dark forest hypothesis works for a collective, but there will be individuals who break out of that mold and with their single action shape the future

Humans are bred to follow leaders. Groomed from birth socially. Especially males. We love our heroes essentially. Chaos is the problem. A Technical Anarchy is the solution. It requires most humans to be smart enough to insist on a decent AI to rule the Earth. Humans aren't capable. We're too parochial and tribal. In our DNA to fight over stuff. Inevitable. Should hurry it along.

I served 3 years managing a section supporting the MM III missile fields in North Dakota. The power and purpose of what we were a part of was driven home every day in many ways. I have not seen a better or more creative explanation of that power, purpose, and for the possible consequences for failure than how it was depicted in this science fiction story, Remembrance of Earth’s Past. Deterrence through mutually assured destruction is an almost irrevocable compact and once instituted cannot be revoked without catastrophic consequences of one form or another.

Honestly, you're the reason I even know of these books, and I thank you! I'm very excited to watch both of the adaptations of it. You motivated me to pick books back up. I don't have a lot of friends that love sci-fi quite like I do (they're all a bit more into fantasy, which I also love), and your videos really do fill a bit of that need I have to consume lore and think philosophically about different series I love. Pacing and context are amazing things. If I through away all my knowledge of the series and listened to this in a vacuum, I get the same strange feeling of disconnect that I often feel in some works that I was so bewildered with to the point I wasn't able to finish. Hi Quinn. Your videos are what got me to read sci-fi books. Thank you so much. I really liked your video where you explained all different races in Three Body Problem and I was thinking if it's possible to do a similar video with species and races from Children of Time books, or A Fire Upon the Deep.

I finally picked up Three-Body Problem this Christmas, and wow, I am glad I did. Honestly I loved it just as much knowing what would happen, at least to some degree.

Ye Wenjie is technically responsible for the Trisolarin events - but the novel takes a lot of care to construct her reasons for doing so - which come down to the inhumanity of the Cultural Revolution and the oppressive regime which followed, and still exists to this day in China. I really found it astounding when reading this book for the first time (english translation) that it had made it out of China, given how clearly critical it is of both recent Chinese history, and current Chinese ideology. The brilliance of the series for me is that Cheng Xin is the absolute opposite of Ye Wenjie - she still believes in humanity - yet that also leads to humanity's downfall. The message I found was we always must follow the course of balance.

Cheng Xin is more of a villain that Ye Wenjie. Instantly failed as Swordholder, leading to misery and death for billions as humanity was forcibly relocated to Australia. Doomed the majority of humanity by shutting down Wade's curvature propulsion research. And finally, made sure the entire universe felt her icy hand of death one last time by leaving behind matter in the pocket universe she had been living in, despite being told very clearly in the communication that they received that the universe was perfectly tuned to the point that every single atom of matter needed to be returned lest the universe succumb to endless expansion and heat death. Well done, Cheng Xin.

@p8wk Yeah heard that argument before & still don't buy it - she didn't ask to be Sword Holder, she was pushed into it & was filled with self doubt the whole time in everything she did - humanity fucked up by choosing her - so I think it's a bad argument - and the rest was her just being her. I really think the idea was to show that too much humanity is just as bad as too little.

"the oppressive regime which followed, and still exists to this day in China" You sound like one of those people who only consume info about China from anti-China one-sided sources....The fact that CiXin Liu is regarded as the best Sci-Fi author and his books are regarded as the best Sci-Fi series by Chinese people and China officials, tells you that's not the case. Maybe it's your knowledge and info about China being too anti-China propagandized, believing things that some media wanted you to believe...The American regime was responsible for the inhuman genocide of Native Americans, does that mean it is the same regime and still exists in America? The current leader of China and the Communist Party, Xi Jing Ping, and his family were the direct victims of the Cultural Revolution, and CR was officially deemed a disaster. That's why Cixi Liu could write about it and use that dark period in his books.

Most Chinese, and even their communist government, have grudgingly admitted that the cultural revolution was a bust. The government, of course, still doesn't acknowledge that the regime of today remains oppressive.

@@Beer_Dad1975respectfully disagree. she spends far too much of the novel allowing things to happen to her. she rarely affirmatively takes any actions to better humanities position. if she didn’t want that responsibility, fine, but you need to vocalize that better. passively letting it happen is bad.

As they never got to the last books on the TV show, I'd love your take on the entire book series and the aliens and cultural stuff that happens therein. But I don't know if it'd be interesting or unique enough among all the incredible things you cover to warrant your time XD
