In this video I talk about the three centerpin reels that I have personally fished. I also review the rods and add in some tips on float fishing and the end of the video is me catching a couple of late season Chum. The video is quite long, but if you're thinking about buying any of these reels, I think it will be helpful. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for posting! I had the same issues with the Saion reel (from Amazon) and did the same with the screws (used loctite to secure them). Agree the clicker dial is annoying, and I've had it fall apart on me a couple of times. I ended up replacing that reel with another "Amazon knock-off", the Aventik 2nd gen. They're slightly more expensive ($5 more USD) but higher quality, no gap inside the spool to snag your main line. The clicker dial is the same, and the reel diameter is slightly smaller. Some replace the bearings with ceramic, but personally I've found that unnecessary.

That cast technique is awesome! I’m trying to learn how to cast my pin and that looks flawless and effortless. 👍🏼

Thanks, I struggled with it for a fairly long time. Probably took about 6 moths of regular fishing to get to that effortless stage. Accuracy was my biggest hurdle, because the timing is so different from a spinning reel.

Thanks for the review video. I just happened to purchased one of those "Amazon" reels from another online retailer. I almost feel a bit embarrassed to make such a purchase as a lot of centre pin anglers seem to be elite or at least seem to like to look elite when it comes to fishing the pin. After seeing your review I can't wait to get it spooled up with some line. I now also need a rod so I appreciate the review on those too.

I find the rod more important than the reel. I've owned, raven, okuma, islander...and an amazon reel...it all comes down to bearings....for the reel...the only reel i kept was an old beat up islander which was my very first centerpin reel and we have shared a lot of steels and browns and i have replaced it's bearing twice...in the past 9 years. I have sold most of my centerpins...

I prefer the Luhr Jensen, but Okuma does have a really good reputation. I would highly recommend going to a tackle store and comparing both rods. Some stores will even let you cast the rods out in the parking lot.

All I can say is that I like the reel. The more I fish it, the more I like it. In my personal opinion, it works just as well as an Islander, and costs about 40% less. For a reel, it's always best to visit a local tackle store and put your paws on a few reels to see what you like.

Hi Peter, this is always confuses me, and I hope you have a answer. Almost everyone use a 10ft fairly heavy action rod for centerpining and they spool with ridiculous heavy mainline and oversized leader. I thought centerpin fishing were originally pair 11 -15 ft light action rod with very light leader. It is almost like everyone driving a sport car like suv everyday now.
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 3 жыл бұрын
The setup really depends on what you're fishing for. Salmon and steelhead in a fast moving river have a lot of power. I'm not sure what you'd define as ridiculously heavy mainline. I run 20 pound monofilament and 12 to 15 pound leader, depending on water clarity. I prefer to bring fish in quickly so that they don't get completely exhausted if they are to be released. Certainly 15 pound main and 8 to 10 pound leader is plenty heavy in the slow parts of our river. In my view leaders for steelhead should max out around 3 feet and for salmon 18 to 24 inches, anything longer is basically a flossing setup.

I fish the luhr jensen legacy 11 foot. It's my favorite rod, just perfect for coho and steelhead, handles springs too, but a bit light for them. I have broken two of them, they don't handle abuse very well, but I keep buying them because I think it's a great value for the money and I like the light weight feel.

I don't have any pictures, but all I did was use some of the silver metal tape that's sold for duct work. It looks like aluminum tape. That stuff is somewhat pricey (unless you have a buddy that does duct work) Not insane though $10 to 15 for a small roll. It sticks extremely well to metal. All I did is cut it carefully and glued it on the spool so that the gap between the spool and the housing was smaller than the diameter of the line.

For the clicker issue just bend the tension spring towards the outside of the drum so it hits the triangle click pawl lighter
@mattpayne4946
@mattpayne4946 Жыл бұрын
Took me 2 minutes it's not the reel it's the spring that's what you don't get in cheaper reels is hardened springs just bend it back a bit and it will stay open for ya when you click it it's because the spring shoots the triangle into the star gear

How do you put the metal tape around spool on the Amazon reel?
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 Жыл бұрын
Just take the spool off, apply tape neatly and trim off the excess with a razor blade. That aluminium tape is super sticky. One layer did the trick with my reel.

@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 Жыл бұрын
@@MordDorr The CP is a very specialised tool for float fishing, it does not do anything else very well. You can float fish with a spinning reel no problem, as long as the rod is 10 feet or so. I did that for many years and got lots of fish. The reason you see the center pin guys catching a lot of fish is because most have many years on the river. It's not the gear, it's the experience.
