Yes!!! Harry was brilliant. Lennon produced his album Pussy Cats during Lennon’s lost weekend period in LA. Got him into primal scream therapy, which unfortunately ruined Harry’s vocal chords for a time. Anyway Harry is one of my all time favorite songwriters.

As a man who loves lyrics, when Brad started it drove him nuts when he couldn't figure out what a song was about. Now he can enjoy the wondering. That's a significant development in his ability to appreciate music. It's like he's adding new 'ways' to appreciate it so he can choose whatever 'way' suits the song.

I suggest you don't over think this one. "It's just no good anymore since you went away"....they had been a couple (2) but now he was alone (1) and 1 is the loneliest number (way to live) that you'll ever do (live). And because bad relationships (2) can be bad hence the phrase "two can be as lonely as one". In that bad relationship you may ask don't you love me? and the answer "No" is the sadist experience you ever know. Yes, it's (the answer NO) is the saddest experience you'll ever know.

@zoegartham312
@zoegartham312 2 жыл бұрын
This song is about being single. "One is the loneliest number," because you're all alone, all by yourself. "Two can be as bad as one," because it's great while the relationship lasts, but no one ever knows the future, so we can't say for sure if we'll be with that person for the rest of our lives. Also, it's quite possible that the relationship can sour in subtle ways long before it ends, so that despite you being a duo, in reality, you're little more than two people living together. "No, is the saddest experience you'll ever know," needs very little explanation. Everyone has asked someone out at one time or another and gotten rejected. "Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know," just reiterates that point, "because one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do,". In this context, "do" is essentially substituted for "be" or "have" as it is talking about being alone.

Three Dog Night was the greatest cover band in American history. This song, by Harry Nilsson, was done well by them, but the original by Harry just squeezes this out. Listen to Harry doing, "Without You", "I Guess The Lord Must Be In NY City", Harry's cover of "Everybody's Talking", "Without Her", and of course his popular "Coconut". My favorite Three Dog Night song is their cover of "Shambala", although B.W Stevenson's cover (who also wrote the song "My Maria) is the best cover. TDN cover of the song "Easy To Be Hard" from the musical "Hair" is also very good.

I was born April 1954. I grew up with the Greatest Music In History. The 60s set the table for the 70s and the early 80s and we all thrived on the best bands ever making incredible music, before it all started to go Digital with forms of noise I refuse to call music. In the past when I heard a song on the radio I couldn’t wait to hear it again ASAP….. Today when I listen to the top 40 stations I usually think… I never want to hear that crap ever again. Things have changed a lot since the 60s.

The rhythmic beat that plays in the beginning and the rest of the song throughout the background was inspired when Harry Nilsson was on the phone and was waiting for the other end the pick up. He got the idea when he heard that beeping from those old phones from years ago.

Absolutely made for AM radio! Short, catchy, and memorable. (no time for instrumentals)

So funny watching you two, coming from a senior who went to their concerts back in the day when their songs were new. With ticket prices between six and eight dollars.
