• Bamboo Propagation - P...
I’m in a sub-tropical area of Florida working with giant timber bamboo, Bambusa oldhamii, one of the best bamboo species for building in our area. Here are three methods to propagate bamboo. This is difficult so don't expect a lot of success. Be patient and try different methods.
Method 1: Make a long cutting (10 nodes, 6 feet long) and lay it on the ground. Cover it with soil and keep in a moist or shady area. The big cutting will have numerous opportunities to root and grow shoots. This will take 3 - 6 months for the nodes to root and then you can cut the growing piece out and put it in a pot. The sawzall is my favorite tool for cutting bamboo, always cut next to a node for a cleaner cut.
Method 2: Cut the bamboo, wait for it to regrow and then make a single or double node cutting. When you cut it the plant will accumulate plant hormones in the tip of the plant, helping it to stimulate roots and shoots.
Method 3: Divide the bamboo. This is easiest with a potted plant where you can just dump out the pot and cut it in half and then replant both halves into their own pots. This is a good method for long term propagation. Just keep it in a pot and keep dividing to make new starts. #florida #bamboo #propagation

I’m going to try this. I ordered some giant cold hardy bamboo. Vivax it was called. They sent root rhizomes which I have planted and carefully watered for 2 months. I was about to give up, but after watching your video, I think I will continue to water them for another few months. Thanks for the video!

Great video. Finally someone explaining how to grow clump bamboo without digging for miles. I have the thinner stuff growing in my garden that i use for veggie trellises etc., but it doesn't seem to spread much, so this is perfect.
@TiaSilvasy
@TiaSilvasy 2 жыл бұрын
The digging method doesn't work well for me. The roots are so strong! No need to dig with these other methods:) For the thinner bamboo you can also try tip layering where you bend down the tip of the bamboo and put it in a pot, still attached to the mother plant. Place a brick or pin it down so it doesn't pull out. Roots should appear in a couple of months.

As ten year olds our teacher for some reason showed us how to propagate sugarcane, and it was the technique of planting several nodes horizontally. He was a fanatic for Australian history too and taught us more history than older students learned in much later years . He was an a-hole however . School wasn't pleasant in those days .

Wow I’m also in Central Florida and I’m on a big ranch in the country. I found a patch of Bamboo in my woods and wanted to learn about transplanting this to a spot closer to my house. My first search for information and I found your channel and video so I’m fairly sure it’s similar conditions to what you’re dealing with. I’ll be trying what you suggested and I appreciate your video on this topic 😊❤️

I'd be careful of transplanting bamboo from the woods. You don't want running bamboo! Stick with the clumping types that are not invasive. There are two good bamboo nurseries in Central Florida, Bamboo forever on Snowhill Rd. in East Orlando and Beautiful Bamboo on the west side near Groveland, FL.

I'm here in Florida also 10 minutes away from Bamboo forever on Snowhill road. I spent about 1300 on albo bamboo plants. I have 2 acres and my neighbors are destroying all the woods so I need the privacy. Was the bamboo laying flat successfully propagated? I picked up several more plants today about 20 feet in length I'm considering propagating them in to many plants. There's nothing like nature in this life, I'm glad to see like minded people.

Yes it was successful. View Part 2- filmed after the cuttings rooted in the ground. Sprouts came up from 4 of the 7 nodes. I actually learned this technique by observing my land. My bamboo was getting too thick so I cut a bunch and piled them up on top of each other. The ones on the bottom that were smushed into the rich soil took root and started to grow. Compost, moist soil and share will increase your success. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZ-HZ9WTvrvSf2w.html

@TiaSilvasy Thanks that's awesome I watched the video. I'm going to start propagating this way I've been soaking bamboo in water all this time. Laying them In the ground does seem more efficient. I spent too much money on bamboo so now I'm splitting plants and picking up bamboo I find free online. After my friend/neighbor died, nature disappeared on that side. Plants, deer I fed daily, owls, wild life all gone they're scared of the new neighbors bull dozers and chain saws daily. My friend Dave that died, he used to always say "This is my paradise" and he was so right.

Once you have two and the third is sprouting I would be comfortable pruning the top of the oldest stalk to induce regrowth to air layer/make cutting. If you prune it higher, say 6 or 10' you can cut it multiple times.

Just more time to grow. You got the rhizome from your existing plant?
@wthomas5697
@wthomas5697 2 жыл бұрын
@@LynnMTHA Yes. There are numerous spots where the rhizomes back up on themselves and pop out of the ground. Some of them have sections that have stuff growing off of them. I just snip the section off. I'm thinking at the beginning of fall I'm going to try digging up several entire plants and planting them in other locations. Supposedly the little cuttings I put in buckets will be ready to go in the ground by then. The bamboo really grew well this year. I think it's the fourth year since I planted the original plants. I'm no expert on plants but bamboo has to be one of the easiest around to propagate.
