"Kaiju are actual, proper characters." Amen. Films like this one and Godzilla Vs. Ghidorah (among many others) that depict Godzilla's personality really enhance the entire film. In Ghidorah, it is Godzilla's remembrance of Mr. Shindo, then his hesitation before annihilating the man who once knew him, that adds that extra layer of humanity to the movie. Godzilla, as I have always said, is a complex and nuanced individual. Not merely a monster; an individual. The same can be said for all the creatures in his kingdom.
@t.rexking4413 жыл бұрын
A great thing about Kaiju is how they are able to be given depth and personality. I think that Heisei Godzilla is a good example of this as I find him to be such a complex and interesting character. Heisei Godzilla started out as an innocent Dinosaur living peacefully on Lagos Island, but then was severely wounded, taken from his island and turned into a Monster. When He awakens in 1985, he is just a curious creature going through a new environment. But after he gets trapped in Mt. Mihara, his attacks on cities become personal, as he attacks because he knows that humans are the ones who turned him into a Monster and are the ones who keep trying to kill him even though His attacks are humanity's fault for mutating him into a beast. But when he finds Jr, the wound left on him from humanity's actions is healed. From GvMG 2 and onward instead of destroying cities in an act of anger towards humanity, he only does it to defeat SpaceGodzilla to free Jr. Godzilla doesn't even fight back against MOGERA when it attacks him. And finally, when he is dying, despite the constant pain he feels as Burning Godzilla, all he cares about is finding his son, the only family he ever had. And when he finds him, Destoroyah kills Jr. And in his dying moments, he makes sure to give his radiation to Jr because he knows Jr did not deserve to die. Heisei Godzilla honestly has a really tragic story and a lot of character to him and I feel his development is overlooked.

@@t.rexking441 Great points. Heisei Goji is a very nuanced and human-like character, which is what I love about him. He is neither antagonist or protagonist, but a creature of raw feeling. He does experience development, though, as you mentioned, much like any human character in a story.

One of the most pivotal moments for Godzilla since his first appearance over the hill in the 1954 original; it was the moment when he started to become just a bit more than a symbol of atomic horror, and while he'll always be notable and remembered for that, I think the added flexibility of him being able to be other things has ultimately been a benefit for the character. It's kept him from becoming stale as time goes on, and allowing new creators to do their own respective spins on the King of the Monsters while still holding to the basic spirit of the franchise.

Mothra: Rodan, please, protect the humans if Godzilla won’t! Rodan: The humans? The same humans who tried to kill me? The same humans who buried me in a volcano and killed my mate? *Those* humans? I like that much of G3HM's kaiju plot is essentially a Godzilla vs Rodan movie. But I have some doubts that Rodan ever comes to be heroic. Even in the final Showa film, he's seen as "one of the killers". On the other hand, Godzilla slowly becomes more heroic from this point on: the key word being slowly. It isn't an abrupt shift. The full flip has been made by the time of the Smog Monster, but only the child (the first Kenny of the series?) is the first to see it. (...and maybe whatever crazy merchandiser decided to start making kaiju toys in the Showaverse.)

Is the larval Mothra of this film the adult seen in "Ebirah"? If so, then the larva in "Destroy all monsters" is probably her daughter. The Italian dubs actually give the showa Mothras their own names, with only the one seen in "Ghidorah" and "Ebirah" actually being called Mothra. The one in "GvM" is named "Watang", while the one in "Detroy all monsters" is "Polluk".

interesting observations to be sure, i never really picked up on the parallels between this conversation and the likes of the olympians...though i definently see it now, although funnily enough this makes me wonder about something regarding my native Reptilicus, when looking at his design and the way he is portrayed he really is like a Dragon of old in a mordern setting, heck when one really thinks about it Reptilicus has a lot of classical Fantasy/dragon story tropes, like Dirch Passer's character Mikkelsen (peterson in the atrocious american version) is depicted in a way very similar to classical comical figures of say arthurian legend, the scientists professor martens and dr. dalby could almost be seen as mordern day equivalents of the classic "old wise man/wizard" type characters , of course with Brigade General Mark Grayson and general Brandt you have your Knight characters, among others...just thought i would share this observation...ormaybe im just overanalyzing it...who knows, that's just how i see it

There is amazing subtext here: In the original Rodan, Rodan had a mate & was gravely injured by humanity, so Rodan decided to die together within a volcano. Only... Rodan didn't die & was enraged, so he attacked Godzilla just so he would die, but still didn't want to make it easy for Godzilla. Here comes Mothra trying to convince Rodan at having a worthy death & calling Godzilla a coward. Mothra's willing to sacrifice herself is what convinced them both.
@cameronjim29832 жыл бұрын
Small error I suppose is how you talk of Godzilla as if it’s the same individual from the very start. The thing is, that the Godzilla that attacked in the 1st film is NOT the same Godzilla that appears in the rest of the showa (to an extent, even the Heisei era) w/ difference between them being their exposure to humans: the original was bothered by the humans by the continual boats passing over his turf (PTSD from when the bomb was detonated no doubt) and “following” him on the island w/ the bell chiming and crowd of people on the hill. Eventually tried to go elsewhere but kept running into people before retaliating, like an animal cornered, and retreating to hopefully be left alone at long last. Then that brings up to the 2nd Godzilla. He seems to have no real beef with humans the same way the original did. Seeming to have more aggression towards the Anguirus than humans. Was most likely displaced very much like the original was and trying to find new territory. Once the Anguirus was dealt with he left. Not sticking around unlike the OG. Then the humans followed him to the arctic and buried him alive in ice. (Granted that would leave anyone pissed in that situation, ngl) The following incident after breaking free from his icy tomb was to make his way ashore. He retaliated against the army who fired at him as he was making his way ashore. Which eventually lead to the fight with Kong and later Mothra. So that might be why he was willing to help and eventually become earth’s saviour and called the humans ‘bullies’. He might’ve not even witnessed the bomb drop the same way the OG did and it’s association with humans. That’s just my theory anyways.

The first idea I had for a kaiju moment was Godzillas initial encounter with spacegodzilla. The initial shock on godzillas face and desperation to seek kinship with this other member of his very rare species says much for his character, even if he is facing some mutant variant. And makes it all the more heart breaking to see him rejected and brutalizes by his cold hearted foe. The other idea I had likely doesn’t count since it doesn’t fit the criteria of being in film or show but I feel this creator perfectly captured the feel of a giant monster attack. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdN7e7qV28yYe3k.html especially with the scene in the send of the saurian monstrosity kronos exploding one vessel after another with his breath! And what The crewman kneeling down in helpless defeat before he’s atomized as well.

I think a lot of "naysayers" about this film forget that Godzilla AND Rodan we're KILLING people in the first part of the film. Gotta hand it to you, every last point here feels like you're hitting on reasons barely below the surface that all of this resonates with so many people - and reasons it should. I do like my kaiju at least a little at an arm's length, something that puts them on a different plane than us and stops them from feeling like simply tall people with monster powers. But as far as turning Godzilla into the hero, "deity of _______ with his own concerns" is an angle that's easy to get behind.
