Racism in the United States isn’t all that it seems. While many of us like to believe that we’re closer than ever to reaching a post-racial society, the research of Dr. Candis Watts Smith paints a very different picture. In her talk, Dr. Watts Smith dispels what we think we know about racism, and explores what we can do in order to live in a post-racist society. Associate Professor of Political Science and African American Studies This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Using a lot of data sources, for example the amount of POC in prison around in the US. The amount of POC in each state. It is the only way to work on a brighter future for everyone.

@@topgurl9313 Are you sure? She's speaking like she was doing scientific studies back in the '90s. Are we sure about that? This all seems so contrived. Do you know of any objective criteria by which to judge "racial resentment"? If you do, the rest of us might like to know. And with that information, how does one extract and extrapolate? Poll people door to door who are giving their honest opinions? Or are they looking at more subjective, selective criteria, like reported incidents of racial slurs, which may be unfounded? Or, what's likely 100% the case, because it always is, are they asking POC to express their feelings? E.g. "Do you feel racial resentment? Is it better or worse than what you felt in the '90s?" As an evolutionary biologist, I find this stuff seriously harmful, as it doesn't even remotely resemble science. But, hey, feels>reals FTW, amirite.

The US' obsession with racism is fascinating. Looking at it from the outside, this obsession looks further and further from reality. At a time in which racism becomes less of an issue, historically speaking, the discussion about it becomes ever more frequent and virulent.

@MAKEUP x TRAP X SUSHI I said less of an issue, historically speaking. If you take human history into account, what you can see is that it's an endless story of empire, genocide, slavery and ever more efficient means of exchange, which until recently, produced more empire and genocide. We have historically low rates of violence, inequality is sinking worldwide and more and more people can live a decent life in relative freedom and material prosperity. Racism is less of an issue for all of us, less so than it has ever been.

@MAKEUP x TRAP X SUSHI Refer to FBI Crime Table 43B and look at the hate crime stats. Also the anti-white debiasing techniques used by the media, Hollywood, and academia. And remember the affirmative action works for some people... but that isn't racism.
@thorbenemig7157

@MAKEUP x TRAP X SUSHI That's simply not true at all. Rates of violence and living standards are not subjective. They are objective facts. People - no matter the background - are better off globally. By orders of magnitude. Technically we have a living standard that would arouse envy among kings from the early 20th century. Similarly most people face less and less barriers. Laws in the western world have become more and more inclusive. That's not nothing. That is astonishing progress.

What is the ultimate goal when it comes to racism? What does the world look like without racism? I would hope that most people would say that a world without racism would mean that skin color doesn't matter. So how do we get there? Do you think that making a persons skin color part of how they identify themselves is going to achieve that? I think we need to take a really hard look at what it is we want and what we are doing to get what we want. IMO most of the things we are pushing to end racism isn't going to get us the desired result.

Maybe true. Then again, some of us have lived 39 years on this earth and have heard every day of our lives how we're horrible people with some sort of internalized cruelty, when we've never hurt a single person ever, yet are told that makes us even worse because we won't admit what they magically know is true about us. Most of those people who say those things to people give talks with titles like this. So maybe it's not fair to prejudge the video without watching it; maybe it's also a backlash against the incessant brow-beating some of us have endured simply for the way we were born. I just wish they'd be honest. "Justice" and "revenge" aren't the same things.

The outer limits of the bell curve in both blacks and whites get thrown out as the norms. Most whites aren't running around with rebel flags and swastikas. Most blacks aren't running around with their pants falling off and talking in Ebonics. My experience is limited to mostly educated, military, and athletic encounters across races. One thing that is happening because of this divisiveness in our country is neither side is very good at listening. While we buy our guns and stock up on ammo it might be wise to take a look in the mirror and allow some air out of the balloon.

In the Bible, Jesus said that love amongst one another is the greatest commandment And that we should first love one another I firmly believe that because love heals. But the government and other groups on this country from time to time stir the pot (for their own gain) and cause anger and divisiveness to come back again. It’s like picking a scab that was healing already I look so forward to the time when governments and groups of rich people that stir that pot can no longer cause this harm. And all races will be able to live amongst one another in that sincere love that Jesus spoke about

I hope we as humanity don't regress when it comes to race-related issues and racism. I go deep into racism in the last video on my channel & like this video, I hope it encourages people to dig deeper when reflecting on reducing racism or reflecting on any major topic that affects humanity really. A lot of confusion around race nowadays so I hope people see clearer.

There are no "myths" about racism here in America or any other part of the world. Racism is REAL. Always has been and always will be. Racism will continue to exist as long as there are people of different skin colors, languages and cultures.Racism originates in the minds of neanderthal minded people who still have not accepted the fact that we all are still human beings regardless of the differences of our skin colors, languages and cultures. Racism will exist as long as mankind exists unfortunately. There's no point in trying to "sugar-coat" racism because racism is here to stay.

A shared definition of racism would not focus on one ethnicity over the other, we also need to claim the existence of ✌🏼”reverse racism”✌🏼which by the way is racism with an extra word in front of it. On top of that we need to help our children understand that even if it we may hear about it happening towards “A” minority member of the community it does not mean that there is only one group of people experiencing it. We have to become aware of how it effects GROUPS & not just a group.

I just know it's pretty suspect that people who claim to be victims aren't volunteering to spread their message of egalitarian peace, love and harmony. The sell it for a price. Every single time. @DavayDalshe
@DavayDalshe 4 жыл бұрын
You're trying to measure racism by the numbers of people in prisons and schools. But it's based on economic. Poor people become criminals much more often than rich people, and rich people and poor people live in different neighborhoods so their children go to different schools. And what about friends. Where do you make friends? In school, in college, in resorts on holidays, in fitness club on golf club, in the places you have fun, at work with сolleagues. And if you're banker relaxing in golf club, you have less chances to make friends with poor people and act with them as servers than a plant worker who drinks on Friday in the cheap bar. Bases of race segregation same as all segregation in times of capitalism - it's all about money.

@@andreanottellin2129 Real quick thought experiment. Don't tell me the answer. Just think about it when you're alone, in quiet moments. If we're all just the same, would you move from a first-world, cooperative society to, say, Somalia or Congo or Haiti to live and raise children? As for not understanding my reply, that's fine. I'm an evolutionary biologist. The taxon of "race" is a colloquialism for geographic subspecies, which means different groups of people evolved in different climates with different evolutionary pressures, and thus have different breeding strategies and different genetic behaviors. You can deny this, that's fine. A lot of people do, because they believe feelings are important.
