Photographs of the American landscape have probably been one of the most dominant themes in world photograph. One enduring theme associated with American landscape photography has been an awareness of the environment - primarily how people have impacted the land. For this discussion I’m going to draw on a paper by Frank Mercado, from the University of Colorado - I’ll link to it in the description). I’m going to track three influential photographers, who’s work is linked to specific periods within American history - and also how their work has influenced major trends in landscape photography. The three photographer are William Henry Jackson, Ansel Adams and Robert Adams. I also look at an exhibition by Andy Adams of FlakPhoto, called Looking at the Land

ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I just returned from a trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado stopping at the American Museum of Western Art in Denver, The docent lead tour highlighted the different eras of paintings and portrayal of indigenous peoples. It is a complex and evolving relationship. The eras mentioned parallel your three styles. The Santa Fey Railroad company paid artists to paint the west and the art often hung in stations. There is a shift from seeing the native people from a Euro-Centered perspective to seeing this dual citizenship from the native point of view. Many of early western painting copied the styles of the European artists and American styles such as the Hudson Valley School. More realistic and nuanced portrayal came later. Thanks again for another thoughtful presentation.

Great video: thank you! We seem to be in a shift from seeing how we've affected the landscape to watching nature affect us. Here in the Pacific NW the changes are drastic.

Thank you. Another informative piece. I always turn the music off as the musical choices add an emotional connection that is often at odds with the pictures being displayed. Less is more IMHO. 🙏

I think the work you show stands alone without the need for a supporting soundtrack. This is just my opinion. I have a volume button so life is full of choices. Great work.

Three excellent photographers, playing their part, although I feel that Ansel Adams merely stood on Eadward Muybridge's shoulders, literally putting his tripod in Muybridge's tripod holes for some shots. Muybridge doesn't get the credit he deserves for his landscapes ... but that's probably due to his homicidal tendencies by that point.

Thank you for the video, I hate vulgar American Landscape photo , Lee Friedlander: The Desert Seen is good, and we Scandinavia’s have our own style. Norway is best at expressionistic landscape and Finland is beat at wildlife. Sweden is stuck in the 60ties documentary stile. Not sure what Denmark is good at, food photography? You should check on Josef Sudek photos on the landscapes of Bohemian
