Jeep's long awaited 3-row Grand Cherokee is quite simply the most capable 3-row vehicle in America uner $50,000. If you're looking for a 7 seat vehicle that can still tackle off-road parks on the weekend and is more reliable than a Land Rover and less expensive than a Mercedes G Wagon or Lexus LX, this L is for you!

Perfect. I think Alex got it right in comparing this with Land Rovers…longer than LRs but aiming for the same capability. I currently have the new Discovery and was looking at the new Defender but this made me interested in Jeep. If Jeep includes hybrid powertrains and the two row version in the next year then it will be a tough choice between that, the new Defender or keeping my Disco. Love the interior and options on the higher trims.

Apparently AoA forgot about the 3 row 4runner. The SR5 and Limited models can be ordered with a 3rd row. These models do not offer a locking diff from the factory but they do have Toyota's excellent A-Trac system. To Alex's point on locking differentials being dangerous at speed I do agree with this BUT Toyota's system only works in 4 LOW so this is not an issue. Plus I'd rather a switch operated locker over one that is controlled by a computer that may not engage offroad becasue some criteria isn't met by the ECU.

I'll admit. It's pretty cool and impressive, but I'm really left with the question of: Why? I feel like this is a lot of effort to make a selling point that doesn't need to exist. It's a similar story to the land rover's. How many people find themselves in a situation in their 3 row, 5000 pound SUV where having one wheel four feet off the ground is a value add for their vehicle?
@nirszi

@paulj9821

Nope, they are using it for the other vehicles as well since they were already develop and finalized. You are correct that it will no longer be used for any future models since the French now own them and they want to go for electrification instead. What a shame that any future Alfa models will being using the STLA large-vehicle platform from PSA which doesn't compare to the Giorgio.

@@frankshabangu522 Yeah but do you really think it's going to measure up the the Giorgio. Regarding which other vehicles will be using it, they already completed the Cherokee KL. If they continue with the Renegade or Compass those for sure will use the STLA but you never know. Remember FCA already stated before the merger that the GRAND Cherokee was for 2021 and the KL for 2022. I hope as well that the STLA will be good but I have an issue when they tack it on a Alfa Romeo. Then again this is about a brands survival so I guess it is what it is.

Awesome review….I’ve owned two other Jeeps (1995 Cherokee and 1995 Wrangler), and enjoyed both. Looking for a nice, quiet, boat-like ride that I can saw through miles in without having to take out another mortgage. I’ve driven the Range Rover lineup, the BMW lineup and the Mercedes lineup. For the price, you can’t beat this vehicle. I do like BMWs interiors and layout. They look very basic, but everything is exactly where you would expect it to be. But, to get a similarly equipped model X7, you’re into the 80k range pretty quickly…I don’t care for Mercedes interiors, and they too get into the 80s quickly. I seriously considered the LR Discovery, or a used Range Rover Sport. They definitely give a luxury feel, but their UI is terrible. They make Toyota’s UI look like a TESLA. Just terrible. I also drove the Telluride and Palisade. Both are very nice vehicles in their top trim (SX Prestige for KIA and Calligraphy for Hyundai), but they are smaller vehicles, and honestly, they just don’t give that luxury feel like the Jeep, BMW, I know reliability might be a tad lower than others (with the exception of LR), but I suspect the powertrain will be fairly reliable given they are carry overs. I haven’t driven the V-8 yet, but between you and Sofyan, I think I may have to!

I'm not very impressed with the axle articulation. Yes, the electronic locking rear diff helps, but having both tires firmly on the ground really helps when you are on a slope.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 3 жыл бұрын
This is about as good as you're going to get in a vehicle designed for on road and off-road use. You'll get more articulation in a Wrangler, but less in a stock Land Cruiser or LX570, especially up front in the Toyota/Lexus. The counterpoint is ground clearance in an IRS like this, you can get 11" of clearance in the center which is more than you'll ever get in a solid axle Land Cruiser with OEM wheels and tires.

Former LX470 owner, current 2019 Grand Cherokee V8 Trailhawk owner. Would love to know three things. Payload as stickered, not only does this affect how much of that 7,200 lb towing capacity you can actually use (I hate reviews that use some generic payload figure, show a shot of the sticker every vehicle has). Second question, has FCAtlantis improved the horrid design of the roof rack on the prior GC? It couldn't carry any weight, so no rooftop tent on the factory rails. Finally, will there be a Trailhawk version? I doubt it, that break over angle looked pretty close on that rock section of the vid.

Rock climbing often involves welding broken parts back on your truck in the field. Do you understand moab and rock work with 4wd vehicles ? At this time Jeep doesn’t have the air suspension or hitch options - they delete them from the parts list (MSRP) for modest credit. Now considering comparison to Honda or Toyota, I never even brought these names to conversarion until Alex did so. My original comment was based on my personal experience with Chrysler as well as on a couple.of my friends' experiences which, obviously, were not only not good, but also very bad, culminating in burned transmission 2018 Grand Cherokee after eight (8) thousand miles. My personal experience lasted from 2013 to 2016 whrn I had enough of constantly wasting my time on endless visits to dealer, and then to private shop, were a mechanic suggested I forget about american cars.
