In this talk, Frank explains the unique communicative power of comics, guiding us through graphical compositions and constructions that harness the full potential of comics as a medium. Frank Quitely has garnered worldwide acclaim for drawing comics for Marvel and DC comics, bringing to life superheroes resident in Gotham, Metropolis, or the X-Mansion. Frank himself is firmly planted in his native Glasgow. Here he has studied and lectured at Glasgow School of Art, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow, and exhibited at the Hunterian as well as Kelvingrove Art Gallery. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Great video! Thank you for giving voice to a creator of a medium that sometimes is seen only as a complementary piece for cinema or literature. PD: is Quitely, not Quietly.

Brilliance like this is why Frank Quitely is my favorite comics artist, and Pax Americana is easily one of the ten greatest comics issues I've ever read.

I just realized that they misspelled his name in the title. It's Quitely as in "Quite, Frankly", not QUIETLY.

A lot of things he’s describing are not specific to comics. Paintings and murals can do the same. But whatever

He clearly said in comparison to cinema and prose. Lmao

Lol in painting and mural art you don't tell stories which spread over hundreds of sequences. That's why comics are usually compared with cinema/animation and literature.

Hillarious to hear him speak so seriously about a ‘robot cat fighting soldiers firing needles from her sharp metal claws’. For gods sake lighten up

Hilarious to hear classics scholars speak so seriously about "sailors disguising themselves as sheep to escape from a blind, one-eyed giant." For god's sake, lighten up. Only realist art and storytelling is to be taken seriously.
