@Alex O'Toole You do realize a 3 year old wouldn't even know what the emergency number is much less what to say unless her parents specifically trained her to do so? And children are absolutely heavily influenced by parenting style used with, good or bad.
@LucyWest3702 жыл бұрын
@Alex O'Toole I highly doubt most three year olds would know how to emergency dial, they usually have to be taught that. Both of them deserve credit, the parents for teaching her this and the child for being responsible and doing what she was taught.

Britain was the first country in the world to introduce the standard short emergency number 999 in 1937 after a fatal fire with multiple deaths. A phone call to the fire brigade couldn't be quickly put through the phone exchange because of the busy time of day. 999 was chosen because on the old mechanical exchanges 9 was the last number on each rotor and thus bypassed all other numbers. USA, playing catch up, took another 31years to introduce 911 in 1968.
@ianmoseley99103 жыл бұрын
neville mason 999 was also chosen with an eye to the then obviously impending war, as it was easier to find and dial on a rotary dial 'phone during an air-raid blackout

Support for Advanced Mobile Location (AML) has also been implemented so if you call one of the numbers from your mobile phone your GPS location is automatically transmitted and the operator knows where you are even before the call is answered.

999 operators are so much better than American 911 operators when talking to children omg its heartbreaking listening to children calling 911 they are going through something scary and operators just ask the questions they need to while not offering any comfort to the child. i wish 911 operators were more like this 999 operator.

What the hell does it matter whether the emergency number is 911 or 999. It's the way the call centre deal with the call, particularly if a small child is calling and probably needs some friendly and calming reassurance and assistance. I assume that all call handlers no matter what nationality ARE trained to deal with childrens calls, aswell adults. All i can finally say is Emma, you're a jolly good girl, very clever, and a brave girl too.I hope that very soon, you will be able to have lots of fun times, playing with your baby brother that you helped to save. I know that your mummy and daddy are very proud of you and also very happy to have such a big, brave, clever and beautiful giri as THEIR little girl. Well done sweetheart.

I think this little girl is a sweetheart and I was proper crying. 999 is from when telephones had a circular dial. If you remember them you had to fully dial the wheel for a 9 so it was almost impossible to do by accident. Basically 999 was the pre mobile butt dial solution. (Or maybe that's an urban legend but that'd what I was always taught.)

Another reason for choosing 999 was that, on an old style dial phone, the 9 was right underneath the metal dial stop. The idea was that a person could easily select the correct finger hole by touch - so it would help a blind person or if the phone had to be used in pitch darkness.

come on now, Im American. Obviously its an emergency, you can easily figure (999 is the same as 911) in the title
