Schizoaffective Disorder is a mental health condition including Schizophrenia and Mood Disorder symptoms. I may not be struggling with Bipolar Disorder and instead be struggling with Schizoaffective Disorder. As I learn more about my mental health, my diagnosis is changing. I am learning more every day and I feel so validated!

My son was diagnosed with schizoeffective disorder about 5 years ago. He went through severe symptoms. It took a lot to get Healthcare professionals to understand his disorder. He has been on medications and is doing so well. I appreciate anyone who shares their journey with this disorder. I'm glad you are sharing. I want people to understand what you go through. I wish you the very best, and thank you for being open and honest about your life. Bless you

Did your son willingly accept the diagnosis? Would love any advice related to this you might have.
@sharonquinn7045
@sharonquinn7045 25 күн бұрын
@SurfMama-dt8kz yes he did, but he was hospitalized for a few weeks mandated by the courts. He was so out of control that the police were called. I was worried, because police don't really know how to react. I was there every step of the way to prevent anything bad from happening. NAMI is an organization that is trying to educate police how to react. I believe they have chapters in different states.

@@sharonquinn7045 thank you so much for responding. We went to NAMI early on, but I think it was all still so new and we were too overwhelmed for it to be helpful. We need to try again. Thank you. Prayers for your family.

@thriftedliving thank you for sharing ❤My 21 yr old son has ASD, OCD, and recently delusions, paranoia, and intrusive thoughts. A 10 day inpatient psych stay they put him on Risperadal and Luvox (antipsychotic and antidepressant for OCD) but it’s done nothing his delusions are tormenting him. It’s so hard to share any of this even with family. They hear psychosis and are afraid of him. He’s currently in a residential psych treatment home and I’m praying 🙏🏻 hard they find the right medication so he’s not so delusional and impulsive and can come home stable. I miss him so much. He gets so sick on the antipsychotics like Abilify made him really sick for days. Hoping my son can find the help you did 🙏🏻Thank you for the hope ❤

I have found they just tend to overdose the patients initially, making it appear, that the medication is bad. I have found Abilifly, to be a really good drug. at therapeutic dose. But it doesn't make one sleep. Age 21, is an age, when the mental illness, is aggressive. I am sad for you. I remember it was difficult, when I was 21 also. I was in and out of hospital, with schizophrenia, and we didn't know how to manage it. We didn't think I needed the medication, and I just kept getting sick. I am grateful Mum didn't abandon me. They were hard years. I believe in time, perhaps up to a month or 2, your son will improve. They have good medications now, much better than we had, for the side effects were horrendous, back in the 80's, we really suffered. I remember, I prayed and prayed, for the medication to be blessed. And now, it is blessed! With few side effects. I remember people saying there is light at the end of the tunnel, and what I learned, is at the start of the journey, it is very difficult, to see any light. But near the end of the journey, we start seeing glimpses, of the light. The point it, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and things will get better. The best is yet to come.

I agree. Without my meds I could not function. I was diagnosed with bipolar 2013, and I have been stable and productive thanks to therapy and meds. I know people are saying the keto diet will get you off most of your meds for mental health, but I'm not totally on board on that. Any diet can make All people to feel better mentally and physically, but diets are not a cure all. Have A Beautiful Day Everyone ❤

@@SmilingBeaver-ou7ncabsolutely! Many of these mental health disorders are neurological and a diet can't treat neurological disorders. Like you said, some can make anyone feel better physically and even mentally, but they can't treat a disorder.

I'm 53, and have paranoid schizophrenia. I have it under control. I've only relapsed, once in a decade, and now, the relapses, don't require hospitalization. They are not that bad, I just sleep them off, and increase the dose. I am here, to say, there is light at the end of the tunnel; for as we get older, the mental illness, goes away, and we learn to manage it better. My youth was in and out of hospital, a nightmare. Now, i am into weight loss, and was size 9XL, now am XL, and reaching my goal weight, and looking good. I found medication seemed to put on more weight. But it could make us more hungry feeling. I have been writing a book weight loss. Its been 15 years work so far. I take Latudazone, for it. I have found it to be low in side effects. Just got to have food with it.

There are so many people wondering what's going on with them, and knowing they're not alone is going to help them keep pursing an answer to their questions. And I'm so happy to hear you advocating for medication. I'm also an advocate for meds. They really can change your life. My son once told me he didn't want to take meds and be somebody he wasn't. I explained to him that they actually allow you to be who you really are, they allow you to feel normal. And having the right mental health doctor can make all the difference in the world. I'm so glad you finally found someone who listens and is willing to explore possibilities. Keep going girl. You got this!

It takes so much courage to share your mental health journey with us, thank you. I have been on a long mental health journey and it's encouraging to hear your positivity about about this. I was diagnosed with a Bi-Polar disorder more than 15 years ago now, it's a challenging ongoing journey for sure. We definitely need to normalize mental health care in this country and just get to a greater acceptance of treating and compassionately accepting everyone without blaming them for their condition.

Thanks for being so brave with your mental health journey! I wish things would change and everyone would be so open- it would help endless people! While not knowing exactly what kind of delusions you had and when I’ll share my advice. I take an anti-psychotic as well due to sleep and as I call them the “crazies” stemming from my severe depression. Things like OCD and depression are mood and behavior disorders, so if you think about it, our thoughts can get psychotic quite easily. for example, after I found the right medication and group therapy, It occurred to me with great surprise that people don’t think about death all night and day. I truly believed that everyone did, but some people just hid it better than someone like me! Is it purely a depressive thought or psychotic? what I’ve learned through all these years is that so much seems to be connected and it really does get hard to figure out what is at the core. But good for you for continually trying to find that! And good luck.😊

I have shared my health issues including physical issues we both have experienced (heart etc). At my last PCP appointment he brought up Schizo...(not sure where he is going with this) and started me back on a low dose antidepressant. My major problem in my 60s has been memory/speech related but neurology doesn't think it is alzheimer's related at this point although I do have a higher risk for it. I also have sleep issues (which is why I am up at 2am watching this) but have to watch taking medications due to the memory issues. For now it's just one day at a time.

schizoaffective disorder kinda came out of the whole "spectrum" line of thinking and it often shows in the people diagnosed with it very highly. it's extremely variable and some people may lean more to the mood side than toward the psychotic side. it can even flip back and forth where a person at times appears to be more schizophrenic now then later have mostly mood symptoms (often prompting changes in diagnosis especially if they change docs). in our family, there seems to be a weird split where most of us show at least some obvious signs of being bipolar but me, my dads sister, and one of her sons show very Schizophrenia like symptoms that stand out a lot. For the three of us we're the weird ones in the family that everyone "side eyes" when we show up because they know where gonna be strange lol but yeah, for the longest time I had no idea that I was also bipolar. the thing that tipped me off was that my aunt told me she was diagnosed as bipolar (which I did not expect) and that after I learned what a manic episode was I realized that I'd triggered a number of them over the years with stimulants and antidepressants. I had considered at one time that I might be schizoaffective depressive type but after I started reading into it a bit more I learned that half of my depression was actually mixed episodes. panic disorder also tipped me off a bit after I learned that it was surprisingly common in both people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but much less common in people with depression. apparently we have three separate disorders that studies suggest are genetically related running in our family and two of us hit every branch on that tree on the way down lol.

I've had schizo affected disorder bi polar type for thirty seven years. I've been on just about every psychiatric medication and don't have outstanding Tardive d. I feel like I am slowly fading away even though the illness I'm diagnosed and certainly have( I know because I've had just about every reported symptom), even though it is not supposed to be degenerative I am slowly fading and at times feel like I'm totally gone. I have all these symptoms and different supernatural stories as to why my body is doing this. And I wonder which comes first mind or matter? I cannot work, I am disabled, even handicapped because I lose my bearings when I work because of my lack of a sense of self and thoughts in general. Fortunately I am able to play guitar and read daily but that doesn't make what I said untrue...

1 Corinthians 15 The Resurrection of Christ 15 Now I would remind you, brothers,[a] of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life
