Thrifting vs. Estate Sale Shopping | Better Stuff or Better Bargains?

We're in a place with bountiful opportunity to add to our collections! But which is the best place for us to score great vintage variety and get antiques for bargain prices? Welcome to our experiment, where we scout an estate sale ahead of their discount day, then hit the thrift stores and compare the bargains we find!
Where will we find the most interesting stuff? The estate sale features the remaining collections of an antique dealer, so we're in for some visual treats and interesting buys...an antique Prussian soldier humidor, sweet 1930s silhouettes and a cute 1940s Vallona Starr ceramics set seem buyable, but we have to be careful because prices on so many things here are way up there! Our strategy is to buy a few things now and come back for half-off day tomorrow.
But if the deals aren't great at the estate sale, will the thrift stores make up for it? Goodwill is a good surprise right off the bat, where two values on vintage Italian glass pop up right away, along with a cheap set of cute 1930s scotty coasters and more possibilities. The Arc thrift store boasts that it's the favorite in Spokane, Washington, and their willingness to take on a wide variety leads us to some sewing-related deals. UGM Thrift is my perennial favorite, and a classic Brush cow cookie jar makes my day!
Then it's back to discount day at the estate, where we let the half-off swarm go ahead of us in hopes that we'll get even better deals later in the day. It works! We end up with our favorite prize of the weekend, a terrific Philco radio that plays great at a price we can afford (finally) as the estate sellers 'cry uncle' and give the deals it takes to move a house full in a short timeframe.
In the end, our purchase prices (and expected profits) tip the balance slightly towards the thrift stores, but the estate sale is where we got the most fun stuff that we expect to sell fast. Call this one a draw?

The glasses with the image of the woman wearing the crown, that’s RBG Ruth Bader Ginsburg
@susanalfieri4487
@susanalfieri4487 Жыл бұрын
Right, but the image itself is a knockoff of the famous RAP PAGES magazine cover of “the Notorious B.I.G” aka “Biggie Smalls,” the world-renowned rapper who died in March 1997. It was taken 3 days before his death (gunned down in L.A. in the whole “East Coast vs. West Coast” rap beef). Photographer Barron Claiborne (in NY-Biggie was from Queens) wanted to portray Biggie as a king, thus “decided to immortalize him with a tilted crown nonchalantly placed on his head." Biggie is believed to have gone straight from the photo shoot to the airport to depart for Los Angeles. When people started called Ruth Bader Ginsburg “the Notorious RGB” (because she was such a badass), someone created the crown image as an homage to the famous Biggie cover. You can see the original image if you Google "Biggie in a crown." It has a red background, and he wears a menacing scowl.

I was raised in early American antiques. However I always wanted to do more of the vintage hunting. I stayed so busy with the pre 1900 Era never had time. So I started thanks to George and Zeno ! Yesterday I picked up first piece at a yard sale! Hager square bowl. I love it. Grey and pink glaze! Thank you guys!

$15 for a salt and pepper, criminy. Now if they had priced at $9-10 (which is still pricey) the first day they would have sold for more than $7. $15 on the green and cream enamel and it would have sold, instead of going for $10. Lowering the Pyrex by $25-50 would have sold those sets. They easily left a couple grand on the table by pricing high. Simple math people :)) Thank you for taking us shopping

Most estate sales are such a tease and take all the fun out of it for me. As a dealer, I stick to auctions and thrifting. It makes me happy finding a few good items that I can profit from and still pass along value to my customers. I want to score that $50 Pyrex promo piece for $12 and sell it for $39. Everyone wins!
@agomodern
@agomodern Жыл бұрын
They are a tease, so you have to know which ones to attend and what to look for. A packed house full of possibilities is a lot better than a thrift store full of junk. I don't know how many times I have gone to an estate sale and completely packed my minivan. I definitely cannot say that about going to a thrift store.

The glasses with Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a crown on is a reference to the Notorious RBG...a play on the Notorious BIG (Biggie Smalls the rapper, who had a popular/famous picture taken of him with a crown on claiming he was the King of the New York hip hop scene). Hope that helps explain the story.

Enjoy all your videos and appreciate your knowledge on items. I’m not a re-seller (respect them all) but if I see something I like and really want, I’d rather purchase at estate sale, as long as price is right. Since i moved to the Midwest 3 years ago, estate sales are everything, everywhere, all the time and I’m now hooked on them. I think estate sales have better stuff and still decent prices. GOOD estate sales are priced to leave lots of room for resellers, or for people like me who are trying not to buy anything new, (i make an exception on underwear and mattresses tho). Pennies on the dollar and lots of inventory.

It’s better quality at estate sales before it gets dumped at thrift store bins. I find many thrift store items are missing their lids and chipped up since no care is taken once the stuff is dropped off at good will or Salvation Army. You just KNOW the items were fine ina persons house for years and end up trashed by being not well wrapped in donation boxes. Such a shame. Whole sets of gorgeous glasses all chipped up ruined by bringing thrown into boxes.
