We'll learn what scales to use on what chords when playing the ii-V-i progression in MINOR. And by the end we will have created a very useful and complete SCALE CHART for jazz improvisation.
In this other jazz lesson we also build up a similar scale chart - but over the chords from the ii-V-I progression in MAJOR.

Here we have the two scale charts (MINOR and MAJOR) as PDF

I started with acoustic guitar 1st of March 2023 at age 55. My idea was to compose music to my poems. Later I found that, the starting idea couldn't hold. Nor could motivation as I have with study and practice Tibetan Buddhism, keep me going. ------ The only thing that can make me keep practicing, is the fun and the exploration, just like a child discovering an interesting toy. There is no motivation. I simply have so much fun with the music, that I can't stay away. Furthermore, I compose my own practice material things as I move on and get better. ----------- I don't play other peoples songs and haven't even used 1, yes, one hour practicing other peoples music. I simply got bored after few minutes, indeed very bored! 😂😂😂 It us so easy to make a melody for me, so why bother with other peoples ideas. All I need is to learn the technique and the sounds I luv and I make my own music. ------------- What I learn from your lessons, @Oliver Prehn, is totally gold for me.!!! Thnx so much. ❤🙏 Btw. From Djursland in Denmark. It's where the swing come from ;) (PS) Got an Arturia MKII 61, Reaper and stuff. So cool to make music. Even after one year byuing my first music instrument and fumbling around. Things can go fast if having fun and luv to explore :) 🤩😎 maybe being a little nerdy too, might help a bit ;) 🤓🤓

Hi Oliver, thanks for another great lesson. I was wondering if you instead of doing this randomly could talk about the different levels of tension in the scales, and thereby create a tension curve or an inverted tension curve with the scales?

Hello Oliver, thank you very much for your videos. I like how you clarify the structure to see which route follow so I can improvize ;) I have a question, I hope you answer me: In the Dmi7 b5 chord, we get all the potentiel scales that matches this chord. For example, the first locrian, it fits, the super locrian also. But why when you came to play the super locrian, you didn't stay on the Dmi7 b5 chord and alternated it to the first chord of the D locrian? (3:41) Thank you again for the contribution you bring to all of the jazz piano students! Regards, Julio

Hi and thanks a lot :) And that's a really good question. I make an expanded left hand chord for sure. For educational reasons I should have stayed on the straight path but I just forgot when recording the lesson, I'm so sorry. But anyway, we still hear the Dmi7 b5 chord flavor, because all the chord notes are represented (when adding the right hand improvisation notes as well). In many cases the mi7 b5 chord can be expanded in the left hand like I do in the video. Many regards from Oliver

Hi, Oliver. In your previous classes you used upper triad based on 4th and 5th grade of a melodic minor scale. Now I’m wondering if we could do the same closing the 2-5-1 in minor with modality like Lydian b3 which, being derived from harmonic major scales, could have any upper triad fitting itself. Thanks.
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 ай бұрын
Hi and a really good question. Yes, indeed you can use triads on Lydian b3. On the Harmonic Major Modes 3 Major triads fit. On for example C Lydian b3 (same keys as G harmonic major) c-d-eb-f#-g-a-b we have the G, B and D triad included. It sounds really great. Actually I use these 3 triads on Lydian b3 at 20:02 in the video ;) Cheers from Oliver

Haha - It's only about every 2nd month a NewJazz video is published. I know that it’s not very often. But NewJazz embodies only ‘little me’ - and I really try to make high quality videos and to push Music over the edge (not that I always succeed). So each video takes some time to produce… I surely hope that you have patience with me :)
