This video shows how to throw the Ball Shape lidded jar in one form.This is the different technique to the other ONE PIECE video. It is usual to throw a lid and a body separately to fit together. This technique shows throw the pot in one closed form then separate into two parts later. It is very interesting method and worth trying. I make many jars in this style and very popular item in my ranges. The separation method is different compare to the straight wall ONE PIECE. These techniques will expand your pots shape varieties.

I threw a few of these this afternoon, not having done any before, and watched this video to see how to trim them but had to rush back to my studio in my pjs to put holes in them for the air to escape- should have watched your video first 😂😂😂 brilliant, thank you 😊

I made my second closed form lid jar in class this evening (not a round one because I hadn’t seen this video yet), and watching your other videos on this topic gave me so much confidence. It worked so much better than the first time. I’m fascinated by your mention of a round wired trimming tool to trim and burnish at the same time. I’m going to look for one. Thank you so much from Canada for these excellent tutorials. You are so generous.

You are so very skilled and precise. Such beautiful lidded pots. I had seen one of these videos awhile back and was hoping to see them again, and then they came up in my feed without even searching. This will take me a while to learn to do this, but definitely something I want to learn. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you Tricia your comments cheer me up😊. “One Piece “ series is one of my favorite methods. The most difficult part is “a recess “ so I recommend to start from straight wall ONE PIECE lidded jar. I posted the Pear shape version which is also interesting to try. I am planning more ONE PIECE to post please look forward them😁

hello. I am just looking at your video now. Thank you this is very clear instruction. Two questions please? what type of clay are you using and after you throw the closed form, how firm is the clay before you cut the lid. It looks like the clay is still somewhat soft. thank you.
@AlchemyCeramic
@AlchemyCeramic 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment Jen😊. This is sanded buff stoneware clay with 10% of Lava Fleck clay which gives nice freckles on the light tone glaze. The clay softness for trimming stage is almost same as usual trimming. When I reform the cutting edge it seems to be the clay needs to be soft, but it doesn’t need to be softer than usual trimming in reality. I hope my answer helps.

Great instructions! How long is the dry time when you place the jar back on and cut the lid?
@AlchemyCeramic
@AlchemyCeramic 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question 😊. Time is not really helpful as everybody’s studio condition is different. So please judge with the pot’s condition. This pot shouldn’t be soft when you trim. I gently press the belly part and if there’s no movement, it is good to go. please make sure the clay hasn’t change the colour to white which means too dry. I need to spray the water well and wrap with plastic sheet few hours to achieve what I want. I hope this make a sense for you.

What make and size is your wire tool? Thank you for a great video :)
@AlchemyCeramic
@AlchemyCeramic Ай бұрын
Thank you for your question 😊. Is it a trimming loop wire tool? if so that one is no brand standard tool I bought on line longtime ago. The loop size is about 3 cm. It is round wire, not flat one. In the beginning I thought it is useless as I wanted a flat wire one to take clay out easily. But I realized if the pot is thinly thrown this tool is useful to trim and polish simultaneously.

Do you use a regular pin tool to cut the lid off the pot ? I have not tried this yet but thought I might need a thin sharp knife.
@AlchemyCeramic
@AlchemyCeramic Жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel, Thank you for your question. This is very standard needle. I have 2 different thicknesses. Thinner one is better for this job. As I spin the wheel the needle is easier than knife. The knife has width so it is not nor easy to control on the wheel. I use a knife when I cut the pot by hand. I did in the recent video “Facetted Salt Pot”
