Throwing lids and pots with galleries

In this video, we will be exploring the process of making pots with a gallery for lids. A gallery is a opening on the top of a pot that is used to hold a lid in place. This technique can add an extra layer of functionality and design to your pots. We will start by preparing the clay and centering it on the pottery wheel. From there, we will use our hands and a variety of tools to shape and smooth the pot. I will also demonstrate how to create the gallery and make a lid that will fit onto the top of the pot. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced potter, I hope this video will be helpful for you. Thank you for watching and happy creating!

Really good clay doesn’t come fresh out of the bag. Really good clay has been reclaimed at least once, is soft and smelly and has rested a good while.

I am glad you like the videos. Yes, HUGE time save. when a student miss a demo or can not remember certain part, I have them watch the video I made. Sometimes half the class is on their phones watching the videos I made for class. This is the first time that it has been a good thing that they are on their phones during class.

This is the first time I watch one of your videos, and you are very engaging, as well as very clearly explaining and showing. I love all the little "whooop!", "clay will squirt up", "happy rim" etc. I also really like your demo pieces, like the cross sections of pot with gallery, different lids etc, to show how they will fit. quick tip: if you are having problems with the gallery area being messy when you for it, try using a wood clay knife instead of a rib. The sharper edge will get a much cleaner gallery. hope this helps

Thank you for the video. Very informative and well done. Where did you get the wooden models that show how the lids and the floor and fit together? So often when I’m thinking about lads hard for me to get my head around what I’m looking at. Those would be great to have.

Not much under 2 lbs. I do not weigh that piece of clay. I just eyeball it and hope I have enough.

I think you are great. I’m trying to watch everything you have on KZfaq. But what I really need to find out and it’s the biggest puzzling thing is how wet is your clay? How malleable is it? Also, if you could please make videos of bloops and blunders. When you’re trying to make a bowl and the upper porch starts falling down because it’s too wet and heavier. How do you resolve that? How can you tell if you have a air bubble in your clay? All the blunders that we make as potters

A blunder video would be fun. Overall I record everything live with almost no editing before I post. In general there are no blunders or I do blunder I stop the recording and film a new video. I like your questions and will think about making videos about them.
