The Venerable 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser. What powers it, what sets this engine apart from other 4x4s, and why are these trucks so reliable? It's a giant 4.5L iron block engine called the 1FZ-FE. In North America, we got either the 4.0L or 4.5L landcruisers that came with the 3FE or 1FZ-FE inline 6 cylinder engines. We did not get the diesel option. This video is a complete 1FZ straight 6 engine teardown with DETAILED how-to commentary of the entire process. I will be rebuilding and overhauling this motor for my landcruiser build project with over 200k miles.
There are definitely quite a few things that set this engine apart from a light duty engine such as oil squirters, crank girdle, built in oil cooler, cast iron block with a solid deck, etc. Quite a few similarities to the 2JZ! They may not make the most power or get the best gas mileage, but they're a stout engine that will surely last a long time.
