I remember when they did this back in 1997. I was teaching an engineering class and made one of the midterm problems about it. Current events and everything, you know. Great video. The pilot of course seems very impressive, and of course brave. Really, going supersonic in general is a very difficult thing, and I would have bet against it working. It sure was not easy to do that in aircraft, and on land there are many new challenges to encounter.

I just can’t believe how his brain must be feeling, taking your eyes off the windshield from where you are going, too down at the gauges while muscling the steering wheel and foot manipulating the gas,while going speeds of 750+. It’s like driving a regular car at 120 mph and how much you are paying attention, times I don’t know how much more. Balls of steel, knowing that at any moment one thing goes wrong, it’s over. That’s a huge amount of faith in that vehicle and in yourself. Makes my head crazy to think about that. ✌️👍🇺🇸

I remember how they had to repair the cars between each attempts because the bodywork was near tearing off in a documentary about this run. This takes some serious courage. Most I went was 180 and my car started throwing off lights because I was in the final gear, and the oiling couldn't take it. (private decommissioned runway.) It was so much concentration even at that speed and micro corrections.

The first thing downloaded to my first computer was footage of that run - download time measured in hours. The view was from the tail forward so I could look both over canopy and into engines. The compression of airflow defined and swept back with a howl as things went transonic. When engines shut down the shockwave appeared to quickly shove the car back. Alarms were heard. The one comment by Wing Commander Green (I love writing that) following his wrestling match to stay on course was something like, “Whew, that was a bit of a thing.” So dry, the British. Well done.

To make it more impactful, the two previous records before Thrust SSC were held by Thrust SSC and Thrust 2, all part of the same program. These people involved in this clearly are way ahead of the pack. It's not hard to beat jet engines when it comes to acceleration, but it is hard to beat them when it comes to the high speeds eventually reached. Therefore if this record is beaten, it will be beaten by another jet powered car, rather than a combustion or ev vehicles beating it in top speed.

I grew up around racing, and so I love speed, and I love watching people control speed with skill. This guy is insane. I knew going supersonic in a land vehicle would create some handling anomalies, but I don't even think I'm crazy enough to steer a car on the throttle at 650 mph with the steering wheel at 90 degree lock to keep the thing straight because it's hardly on the ground. I actually remember reading a little book called “the fastest cars in the world” as a kid, and since it didn’t limit itself tk production vehicles, the Thrust SSC was number 1. I don’t remember when the book was published, nor when I read it, but I know it was late enough for the Lamborghini Murcielago to be included.

That book was first published in 2007 and it was a Top 10 list book. I remember seeing the date when I was reading it as an elementary school student (I was in my 4th grade, 8 or 9 years old, am 21 now) and I loved reading about the different cars. That book was what first got me really interested in cars and what they are capable of.
@AMS-KungPao Жыл бұрын
@@VERT1220 I think I remember most of the entrees even though I was only a little kid when I read it and i'm 21 now. Murcielago was in 10th, Enzo was in 9th, Koenigsegg CCR 8th, McLaren F1 7th, White Lightning 6th, Veyron 5th, Callaway Sledgehammer 4th (I don't remember 3rd and 2nd) and of course the Thrust SSC as the fastest car. I know that the Thrust 2 is the 2nd fastest car and it made 650mph in 1983 I believe but for some reason it wasn't in the book. :/
