🏌️Ready to Learn The Holy Grail of Golf™? Start Your Training Today!
Hogan called the right thumb and index finger the "swing wreckers" but I think it's both thumbs. In the golf swing we don't want to be applying any force to the club with the thumbs of either hand. The thumbs are the strongest part of the hand and we're very used to to using them. Our wrists work with the thumbs but in golf we don't want to use them at all. Just as we don't swing a baseball bat with our thumbs on the grip, the golf swing should be performed the same way - without pressure from the thumbs. Try gripping and swinging a golf club with a true baseball grip using no thumbs so you can feel what truly swinging the club with the hands feels like rather than trying to manipulate it with your thumbs. Learn to swing without thumb pressure and your golf swing will improve.

Great vid! As you say both thumbs are a problem. Glad someone actually spoke on this! My left hand thumb was always causing me problems as it kept pressure on the club and that would cause all sorts of problems in the downswing, and at contact. Ive had to make a concentrated effort to extend my thumb flat as to take the pressing down instinct completely out of the equation and then wrap my right hand over it. And it makes a huge difference!

This is fantastic! I teach the same old-school grip technique as I am an old duffer and this is all I know. Some of my students have refuted this with opposing views in other youtube videos. However, they struggle to release at impact. It gets worse when they try an exceedingly strong grip. If you cannot get the club to release naturally, that club face (no matter what) will remain open and a slice will occur. I haven't seen good instruction like this since Sam Snead, Bobby Jones, or Patty Berg (methods I was taught and still hold to). Thank you so much!

You explanation of our powerful thump and why not to do this is priceless. I must say you are the best golf instructor on You Tube who never hits a golf ball. There's more to it that I didn't talk about here. The right thumb might be the more important part of the golf swing. When used improperly... it hinders the swing tremendously but when used properly, which is almost not at all, everything work right. The key is knowing what that "proper use" is.

Awesome video as always!! Can you explain DJ and Rahms bowed left wrist.? Should your left wrist be bowed at impact?
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. The reason is ... how much bow? If you over-do it that ball's going left if you under-do it, it's going right. Do you know anyone who can swing at full speed and perfectly angle their wrist the same amount every time? I don't. These guys apparently can but they literally practice every day. I prefer to let the club dictate to me what to do rather than the other way around. Have you ever noticed that when you're swinging really well it doesn't matter how you address the ball, closed or open, it still flies straight? It's because you're allowing the club to tell you what it wants to do instead of you telling it what you want it to do. The club is engineered to hit the ball, humans are not. I trust the club.

Something that I have been wanting to ask you: Assuming you grip is correct (see a few knuckles on your left hand, Vs pointing to your right shoulder, etc.), why are the only two acceptable ways to hold the club be either interlock or overlap? I have experimented with a baseball grip (mind you my hands are firmly touching, just not overlapping or interlocking) and I feel like I have more control of the club, especially in the backswing. Baseball players can generate power with their hands close together, why can't it work for a golf swing?
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 3 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with a 10 finger baseball grip. You do have more control of the club, which you may or may not want. There are 3 basic grips but most people will only tell you about the two you mentioned. There are players on the pga tour that use a 10 finger grip. I had a friend years ago that said, "I can kill it if I use a baseball grip." So, I said, "Then why aren't you using it?"

Hello G, would you please clarify your last two sentences: in order to prevent fat shots i should place the ball more backward? And how should i change my low Point with the driver ( because i have to hit the ball in an upwards move) i have asked you that question already but cannot combine your answer with your last two sentences of your new Video ... thanks for your patience...
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I've spoken with several people who asked about fixing a fat shot. They were trying to fix it by picking the ball off the turf. Not a good idea. Like I said, a fat shot is a good swing but you just didn't catch the ball first. Fat shots are caused by the ball being in the wrong position or trying to help the ball into the air. We all know you can't actually hit the underside of the ball so hopefully no one is doing that. A lot of golf magazines and videos will tell you to have the ball forward in your stance ... why? So you can pick it with a thin flicky swat? What you should do is let your swing tell you where the ball should be. Swing naturally with no ball, take a bit of a divot and see if you can hit the same spot over and over and where it starts and that's where your ball should be. Changing the low point of the driver ... I think that might be a good topic for a video. The thing with the driver is that we want to hit it on the upswing but that's in relation to the ground and not so much the player. The player still feels as if he's swinging the club downward or level. When people try to make the club strike the ball on the upstroke they often collapse the lead arm and cause the ball to go left. Definitely a good topic for a video. Mostly we just don't want to strike downward with the driver.
@spondiveswandive561
@spondiveswandive561 2 жыл бұрын
So based on this you never want to push the club head toward the ground? To me it feels like you would hit the heel of the golf head on the ground instead of the toe of the club head
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and that's a common belief which is why people push the clubhead down toward the ball. The reality is that the engineering of the club will do all that for you and do it perfectly every time, if you let it. In order to learn these things you have to prove yourself wrong and try to do what think won't work, only to discover that it does.

Sir. What do you think, in your analysis, might happen to the takeaway and backswing if the right thumb is incorrectly positioned?
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf Жыл бұрын
If it's used incorrectly it controls the entire swing and essentially destroys it. People instinctually want to use their thumb because it's strong and they align it with the direction they way to move the club but that's not actually the direction the club needs to move so they have a very hard time improving simply because of the thumb. I didn't talk about it here, but the right thumb is incredibly important when used properly.

At 82 I can be considered a dinosaur. But for decades I've gone with the "old" Ernest Jones method : grip the club with the thumbs and forefingers of each hand. Now putting.......still works here if I could read bermuda greens.

So if the club is too long before it hits the ball what makes it not hit the ground first?
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Lag. The farther forward the handle is compared to the clubhead/ball, the closer your hands need to be the ground. If you can barely reach the ball you have to flip the clubhead at it just to reach it and in so doing many people hit the ball fat or thin and clanky. It may sound scary or difficult but it's actually easier to strike the ball when you're too close rather than too far away from it. When you're too close you must make a compensation to shorten the club which we call lag, and it happens naturally, and there's no desire to flip the clubhead toward the ball because you know it'll get to the ball. With a little practice you'll get it pretty quickly and you'll notice a more compressed ball and penetrating flight.

@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 3 жыл бұрын
As I remember Hogan changed his stance open or closed depending on the club. This also changed the position of the ball. So, yes I think the ball position does change depending on the club. The longer the club the more forward the ball can be because you're not bent over as much. Basically, the flatter the swing the more forward the ball.

Hogan certainly wanted the thumbs out of the equation. Anyone who has tried his swing drill with right thumb and index finger off of the club knows how ridiculous it feels and how difficult it is to swing. Its strange to think he wants all that right hand power but then wants those two fingers removed. What we have to consider is the pressure applied to the two middle fingers of the right hand. As you grip with the right hand and the left thumb becomes welded to the shaft by the pad of the right thumb, you need to apply your grip pressure there to feel the pressure in the two middle fingers of the right hand. NOT THE THUMB, but the PAD of the right thumb is applying the pressure for the grip. Hold your right hand beside your head like your are holding a baseball. If you make a fist by gripping with your finger (folding them down), the wrist wants to fold downward as well. However, if you attempt to make a fist by driving the pad of the thumb inward, the wrist cocks back. This is your source of wrist hinge and lag. From the top of the backswing, if we apply this pressure. it prevents the hands from flipping and forces the right elbow down into your side naturally. At this point you can drive the right hand down into the hitting area very hard without casting the club.

By “letting the club go” I mean the release. My right forearm stays locked and there’s no right arm extension on follow through. I wonder if this tip would help me?

You are correct, you are skilled if you can hit a ball well with the right thumb on the shaft. It'll feel really weird to you at first to move that thumb but if you can get used to it, you'll be hitting the ball farther with less effort.

Number one reason I hate the stronger left hand grip my thumb gets in the way. But I shoot so good with a strong left hand. Blaaaaaaaaahhh

Well, some people simply don't know. I played with a kid who was very athletic but had a huge slice ... I told him about the thumb and he said it felt too weird but he'd work on it. The next time I saw him he was killing the ball nice and straight. He'd made the change and was very happy.

Guilty! I thought that I should use both thumbs to force the club head to the ball.

Nope. I had you in mind when I made this. I know you asked me to go into more detail but I thought this was pretty good for now.

Long left thumb takes my left thumb out of the grip , feels like baseball grip , the thumbs are a big cause of overthetop I'm thinking , like your saying , you are revealing too many secrets to golf

I agree. I use a long left thumb for that very reason.

What works for some may not for others. I use a strong grip and point my right thumb at the target and swear when I change it I’m the most inconsistent golfer ever
@HolyGrailOfGolf
@HolyGrailOfGolf 2 жыл бұрын
The key there is "strong grip." If your grip is strong enough you can use that right thumb but for most golfers with a normal or neutral grip that right thumb is a guaranteed slice. You're right, not everything works for everyone. The key in golf is that two "wrongs" can make a "right."

It's not really, it's just that everyone thinks they are. Anything that isn't obvious, people think is secret. Plus people click on the word "secret."
