Hey everyone! The next James Bond film on the James Bond movie marathon is here and this one was so fun! The underwater James Bond film as I like to call it. The action in this one was very interesting from the speed up shots to the amazing under water fighting. Also props to the sharks, their acting was great. Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

There were some great James Bond toys released when this came out including the rocket belt set and scuba set with the red jacket for the 11 inch James Bond action figure and the yacht that turned into a hydrofoil. The toy department of my local Sears department store had an awesome display with Bond in the full rocket belt outfit "flying" above a miniature fortress set with the other new 007 toys arranged in/on the set.

"Do you mind if my friend sits this one out? She's just dead." This is my dad's personal favorite James Bond movie. He was very into scuba divining until the early 90s. Fun Fact: In the underwater scenes, where Bond encounters sharks, Sir Sean Connery was supposed to be protected by clear plastic panels shielding him from sharks in close-ups. However, the panels only extended about three feet in height and sharks could swim over them. As a result, in some scenes (notably during the pool fight at Largo's mansion), Connery got much closer to the real sharks than he wanted. Director Terence Young said in an interview that scenes used in this movie where Bond reacts in fright at the approach of a shark were miscues, in which Connery was reacting with genuine terror as a shark approached unobstructed by plastic shielding. Bonus Fact: Sir Sean Connery performed the gun-barrel sequence for the first time because of the new Panavision process used in the movie. Beginning with this movie, the sequence would be performed by the actor playing Bond in the movie.

The huge yacht explosion at the end was way more powerful than expected. Special FX supervisor John Stears (got an Oscar for this movie) was given experimental rocket fuel to use for this scene, but he had no experience with it and seriously underestimated its power. He had covered the entire boat with it and when it detonated, the blast was so powerful it shattered windows in Nassau, about 30 miles away.

Thunderball was the point where the series had become an established blockbuster. As well received as From Russia With Love had been, it was Goldfinger that was the huge commercial breakthrough. By the time Thunderball had been set up for the next year, we saw the first big wave of James Bond merchandising, including everything from expensive watches and cologne to diecast models of the Aston Martin and action figures for children. So yes, at this point the films had become a little broader and goofier, and each film had to top the previous one in spectacle. You'll see the apotheosis of this process in the next film, You Only Live Twice.

The original script for this was written in the 50s. Ian Fleming was trying to get a Bond film produced on his own. When talks fell through he turned the script into a novel. The co-writer of the script, Kevin McClory, later claimed rights to elements in the script (Blofeld, Spectre) and said he had the right to make his own Bond movie. But he only had the right to remake Thunderball. Which he did with Never Say Never Again.

Everything about this film is bigger in scope. It looks gorgeous, vibrant and epic in scale. The music is also brilliant. This is the high water mark (no pun intended) production wise whilst still remaining relatively down to earth (or underwater) before they went a bit OTT.

When the boat blew up the explosion was so intense that it shattered windows in houses that were miles away. Paula was played by one of the gypsy girls in the cat fight in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. The effect of Bond in the same pool as the sharks was achieved by putting a glass partition between Sean Connery and the real sharks. One of the sharks, however, swam over the top of the partition into Sean Connery's side of the pool. Production designer Ken Adam said, "I never saw Sean get out of the water so fast." The women swimming in the opening credits were photographed naked and the double in the jet pack was its inventor. They asked him not to wear a helmet while flying the pack because the producers felt that didn't look "Bond like," but he refused.

Martine Beswick also played one of the Gypsy Girls who have a fight in From Russia with love. She was also in a few Hammer films. Her best of these was Dr.Jekyll and Miss Hyde, where she played miss Hyde. Please could react to the Hammer film classic Dracula (Horror of Dracula) from 1958. One of the great Dracula films. Thunderball is a HIGHLY underrated Bond movie. Everyone complains that the underwater sequences are slow and boring, yet I think they are amongst the best parts of the film. Indeed, they are so unique for the 1960s! The plot is brilliant and I love Emilio Largo and Fiona Volpe. So much better than YOLT. And the music too is on point! Definitely in my Top 10 Bond movies, maybe around No. 7 or No. 8.

@@billolsen4360 I think Largo is a very underrated bad guy. Adolfo Celi is a great actor and, despite being dubbed, manages to convey not just menace, but charm too. IMO this is the best Sean Connery Bond film. I'm actually not a fan of Goldfinger--it doesn't even crack my TOP TEN. Partly because this was the first Bond film created specifically for the big screen. (Those of you who know the Production history of the film know what I mean.) There's a visual motif that is a big part of later Bond films, and is set up during the cold open. The camera cuts between Bond staring at "Madame" Bouvar entering the car, and Bond realizing something. The detail isn't something we the audience would pick up the way Bond does, but it trains us to pay attention throughout the series when we get the edit cut (1) between Bond looking at something and (2) what Bond is looking at. This simple motif actually stayed in the Bond films into the Timothy Dalton era, and I like it because, among other things, it sets up the idea that Bond was trained to have an eidetic memory. In the real world, high level training for detectives and field agents does include developing an eidetic memory.

What are the wheels going to do? They keep the belly elevated so the bad guys can unload the bombs. And, by opening all under-fuselage doors (including for the wheels), the plane will take on water and sink faster. My second favorite line from the movie that I use all the time: "Somebody's probably lost a dog." Favorite, of course, is everybody's favorite: "She's just dead." Finally, a shout out to Martine Beswick (Paula) who has to be one of the hottest Bond girls ever. My eyeballs pop out of my head every time I see her in that bathing suit (most of those scenes edited out here, boo).

I honestly wouldn't put much stock in the IMDB ratings because old movies, with the exception of those that are among the most highly regarded films ever, tend to skew lower on the whole. Plus so many morons rate everything a 1 or a 10 lol. The average rating of every one of these Connery movies being around 7 is ridiculous. Each one so far is at least an 8, if not higher, especially FRWL and Goldfinger.
