Ice Fishing For Smelts - Jigging Tips for Catching Smelts

We're so happy to be back out on the ice. Today we're out here fishing for smelts using tiny Stingnose Jigging Spoons to jig up smelt after smelt after smelt. I prefer to tip my Stingnose with a little piece of plastic to help entice that extra bite.

I remember back when I was a kid in the 70's south end of lake Michigan catching them by the five gallon bucket full..now none!!! I miss those days......

my dad used to go smelt fishing on lake simcoe and pulled out two 5 gallon buckets full of smelt

They disappeared from Lake Champlain as well once the alewife got into the lake.

Awesome video. I remember smelt fishing with my dad as a boy. They seemed bigger back then. He used to use a weight with 2 dropper hooks, and "bait" the hooks with bits of foil from his cigarette packs... We'd catch bushels full then clean and freeze them.... good times!

You should see the big ones we catch on Muskrat lake, Ontario. They are the size of jumbo perch.

it varies by body of water...the smelt can be right on the bottom, or they suspend.

A little tip for you here we leave the smelts on the ice to freeze and for some reason it sweetens them up.

Using maggots on 4-6 hook rigs work great. Kill them through the ice on lake Erie. they grab the maggots, not the hooks. Shake them of in the bucket and back in the water. Doubles and triples are common.

How do u know where to fish for smelt?

I am no expert, but I find them during the winter in anybody of water where walleye roam with ice off during march or april

if you live near the Atlantic, preferably north eastern US or Canada. you can find them in brackish rivers 2 hours before and after high tide.

i thought smelts only came from the sea, they are on rivers and lakes not connected to salt water?

They are a freshwater species, Smelt is a generic term for skinny silver metallic colored fish.

@@markpetricevic3368 ahhhh, thank you very much. i think i saw on wikipedia in the past they said it was a adrenemous? fish, as it came from salt water into fresh water to reproduce. they are called "Eperlan" here. -mffp.gouv.qc.ca/faune/peche/poissons/eperlan.jsp (english button top right of the page)

they are also in the great lakes and other lakes such as lake Simcoe etc.....and of course, they are in the ocean as well

I think you may mean “smolt” which are very young salmon.

@@jamesnadeau3404 yeah they’re definitely smelt, and not smolt, I was just telling dheyaa that he probably is mistaken about them being “salmon smolts”
