Generally, skydiving through rain is a bad idea. Why? Because it hurts. It sucks. But skydiving through rain with a dash of lightning sucks even more.

Keep in mind, it's basically impossible to skydive into thunderstorms. You could be injured or struck by a lightning strike to death. ☠️

One of the funniest skydives I made was during the winter when we fell into frozen rain. 4 way, 182, 7,500 . It felt like being sand blasted at 120 mph on any exposed skin

I remember doing a demo jump in Australia in the 90s with huge tall cumulus about - painful hail in ff, rain under canopy and dry and 30 degrees on the ground.

Haha, did that once too (jumping through a rain cloud while it's raining, not the thunder and lightning shit). I went through it sitflying and got hamstring and ass redened and sore by the hail impacts (at least it felt like hail). Another dude on the same load only did belly flying and wore an open face helmet and he went through belly down. Back on the ground his face was hilarious. It was all puckered up like the skin of a toad and also completely red (no bruises or bleeding).

However, a bird in flight isn’t grounded so lightning hitting a bird in flight is going to be rare.

@@sollekram Not the same. A power line is built high enough and away from the ground so it doesnt arc through the air. A lightning strike does ground through the air and it will go through you.

@@sollekram There was a famous story about a female paraglider in a national competition who got sucked into a thunderstorm in Australia I think it was, well, one of the guys in the competition that day also got trapped in the cloud and he died due to his parachute which he used in order to escape the storm cloud, getting struck by lightning.

Terminal velocity of a water droplet is about 20 miles per hour. T.V. of a skydiver is about 120 mph. So you hit the droplets with about 100 mph. Never been skydiving in the rain, only in good condition, but I have been riding my bike in the rain with 60-70 mph. With this speed, every droplet hit on the body could leave a mark. If you don't have hard protectors all over your body, the feeling is like you've been shot a thousand time per second with a bb gun. And they have exposed skin on their faces. It hurts me just watching it...

Not to sound like an old fart ,( I am ) but the jump plane pilot probably violated an FAR or three and the jumpers violated at least one USPS/FIA regulation! Not to mention the stupidity of all involved! We used to do that kind of stuff ( and much worse ) all of the time. Wisdom and knowledge along with common sense comes with experience and age! Be careful out there! Blue Skies!

Looks like Mile high Skydiving Center north of Denver, CO (?) Or some other place near mountainous terrain. The bases of the storms there can be 10k to 15k above the ground or more.

Did a two way from 7,500 in light rain nobody else would go up. The rain was painful at terminal. Nice 2 way jump but red face and soaked gear.

Several of my jumps have gone through cloud. Usually low though, entering cloud while canopy is opening.

The problem is that you have to spend hours drying out your canopy before packing - but it is a hoot to jump through rain clouds

Me and a freind jumped into blue sky and entered a cloud and it got dark and cold and bumpy. I was like, OH NO. But came out the bottom back into blue sky. Never will forget that one.

Rain drops are very pointy on the top when falling through them at terminal velocity. I did this once and looked like I had chicken pox when I landed

Not always illegal. As long as you have your clearances, and no lightening you can jump. It is very painful, during and after, be warned.

That's oh my first jump was. My buddy and I were the only ones to go too so we didn't get to watch people landing all day. The guy my buddy was tandem with said on the plane, holy shit look at that tornado over there and pointed out the window. Definitely freaked me out, but man was it a rush.

Not illegal at all outside the US where jumping through clouds is a regular occurrence. Just bad luck, nobody does this intentionally....nobody sane that is.

He could easily have been sucked UP thousands of feet underneath a T-storm, they are lethal to planes, much less parachutists. What the Fuck was the jump pilot thinking to even fly under it ??? He needs to loose his pilots license - PPERIOD

0:33. Thunderstorms can strike on any ground target, sometimes trees, but rarely humans. But instead, we're skydiving into it! Woo-hoo!!!! Could you possibly survive thunderstorms?

I'm pretty sure there have not been tests regarding this idea, but regardless of what electrocution effect the lightning would have on the jumper, the extreme heat created by the bolt could still easily kill the person

An electric discharge can and will go through a person's body in mid-air. There's a documented case of an electrocuted paragliding pilot who got sucked into a cumulonimbus, His name was Zhongpin He. Look him up.

Yes. Anytime anyone is dealing with high volts of electricity in any form, especially lightning, there is always a risk of electrocution. It would actually be more dangerous being directly in the sky during a lightning storm because you're not grounded to anything. A volt could pass right through you and completely fry your insides. You always wanted to be "grounded" during a storm, that way the current can't complete a circuit in your body.

I am not a specialist, but all I know is that during the 2007 (or 2008, not sure) world championship of paragmiding, which took place In Australia, a Chinese competitor has been struck and died immediatly. Just sayin'.
