The Waxed Jacket Showdown! Thursday Boots burst onto the scene in February with a compelling waxed jacket offering at a decent price. BUT - can it hold up to the precedent set by Huckberry's popular Flint and Tinder jacket? Let's find out!

Great review, Patrick! A waxed trucker jacket has been on my want list for a while. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to Huckberry's site to read reviews on Flint & Tinder's jacket. Then, Thursday decides to produce one....ahhhh...decisions decisions. I will have to watch this video again when the time comes for me to order one. And, I just might have to ask you some more detailed questions as well. Again, great job Patrick! 👏

Thanks for this video and for adding your layering category. This is an important thing to know for me as I would layer. If Thursday dropped the price by even $20-$30, it would do a killing, I think. If for only $18 more you can get a famous thus cool version of this jacket, then the choice is obvious.

Great comparison. If it helps anyone, I own the F&T in small and medium. I have a 39 inch chest and 30 inch waist. The small is perfect over a t-shirt, but I can't layer it over a fleece without looking like a stuffed sausage. The medium is actually a big step up in size. Over a t-shirt I look like a kid in dad's jacket, but it works great over an insulating layer. Based on your video it sounds like Thursday's medium might fall right between the two, which would have probably been the better option for me, but I've had mine for years (small for 3, medium for 2) and they've held up great.

One quick side note: it is said that the FnT lining on the Hudson jacket comes from Abraham Moon which is an old UK made company. Note sure about the trucker but I have read that it was an American made lining. Unfortunately I can't find that source again.

Great suggestion, TCC! My top suggestion for windy weather right now would be the Proof Passport Field Jacket. The two jackets seem very comparable with an almost insignificant price difference. I got the Thursday jacket because I prefer the cotton lining to the polyester or wool lining in North Florida. I started wearing waxed cotton motorcycle raingear in 1969 but the traditional British products have gotten a bit dear. Rugged stuff that benefits from rewaxing every year or so and looks like new if you turn the garment inside out and toss it in a dryer for 5 minutes.

I have to compliment you on the thoroughness of your review and the detail you provided in every category. You confirmed my suspicions that the F&T is a better jacket. Sizing question, I’m 62 years old, about 6’3” 205 pounds, 44 chest with average torso and longer arms. I plan on wearing with a t shirt but would like the option to layer over a sweater or long sleeve shirt. Most jackets in a large are tight in the shoulders and narrow in the waist for me so I’m thinking probably Xl. Only concern is that the XL will be boxy. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again.
@rockymtnstyle
@rockymtnstyle Жыл бұрын
Hey Slip! Appreciate the compliment and thanks for taking the time to watch. My chest is about 44" also. Given you're much taller than me and only 18lbs heavier, I actually think a large might work for chest/shoulders. The only potential issue will be the sleeves being a bit short I'd think, because for me, the large (wool-lined) I have only has about 1.5" extra length on the sleeves. So that leads me to an XL. It will certainly be loose, but I don't think it will be too boxy. The shoulders on all are narrow and there is a straight silhouette so you should be good. And if you want to layer over a swear or L/S shirt, I'd 100% try out the XL. Hope that helps and hope it works if you pick one up!

I ordered mine in November and had the same annoyances (if we can call that) as you. I very much like the jacket, one of my complaints would be just an issue with it being a trucker as I wish the sleeves were shorter, but some quality of life touches would have been nice. I wish the front pockets were lined and I wish that it was easier to layer. When wearing this jacket, I would normally be wearing a hoodie and most of my hoodies, except for 1 (makes me want to get a zip up version of that same hoodie because of it), will bunch up unless I hold on to the cuff of the sleeves as I slide my arms through. This is a minor inconvenience but still something that I dont want to conciously be thinking about when just trying to walk out the door. Also, due to that, often times I need to readjust my sleeves underneath the jacket otherwise it would inhibit motion and comfort at my elbows. This was most noticeably an issue with my American Giant Classic Hoodie. Regarding the lined pockets, they really are only good for blocking the wind and maybe putting small items for temporary storage. Often, I would instinctively put my hands into those pockets looking for a soft place for my hands to comfortable, while my face is being tortured by New York winter winds, but was left disappointed. Do you think these are things that a tailor could potentially resolve? Atleast in regards to the sleeve length and pockets? I don't know how that would affect the quality of the canvas and wax though. Additionally, another complaint, which is a lot more opinionative, is that I wish that the inner flannel lining was more color neutral. I mostly wear blacks and greys, which is why I chose the coal option, but if the lining is exposed via the torso or if I want to roll up my sleeves then I have yellow stripes being visible that throws off the outfit. That last complaint probably isnt that big deal but I feel like maybe matching the liner to the color of the jacket would have made a HUGE difference in terms of perceived attention to detail and I would enjoy this jacket SO much more. There have been so many times in which I am wearing the jacket inside and taking it off wasnt a viable option but didnt want to roll up the sleeves or cuffs due to the yellow stripes.
@rockymtnstyle
@rockymtnstyle Жыл бұрын
Hey man! Appreciate you sharing your experience. To answer your first question, I've always heard that a good tailor can do anything for the right price. If you were just looking for something soft to be sewn in that might be doable, but making them any larger to accommodate more stuff would probably be way more trouble than its worth. I agree with you on the lining color. I think perhaps they might have wanted a distinctive feature so if someone saw it they'd know it's a F&T. But who knows?! Cheers, mate!

Excellent review and I really appreciate your attention to detail. I'm sure both jackets will be awesome. I've never had either in hand, but I'm just noticing that the majority of pictures that I see of the Thursday, is that the fabric appears shiny or wet. Perhaps that is their intent? Maybe will patina and dull as the jacket is worn.

Thank you, Harsha! Overall I think the F&T is better for me and how I normally wear these jackets, which is over a t-shirt on a not-too-cold day. Great review once again. Thursday Quality goods will be my choice for a few reasons and i will explain. England makes very high quality wax canvas products and most of those quality brands prefer a dryer feeling wax.(idea for a little research & video topic) Portugal have great craftmanship in all kinds of products not only clothes. I personally don't mind where it is made because i lived in Europe for half my life. I am jealous of the cool factor. ( The last of us )

Thanks, man! That's interesting info about the dryer wax. I hadn't realized that. It makes sense, especially if developing a "sick patina" isn't the main goal of the jacket. You nailed one key thing for me. Where it's made. I've been wanting an Iron and Resin Scout jacket for about 8 or 9 months now. I haven't bought it because it's "imported" and I can't find where. My problem with that is they used to make it in the US for a lower price point, yes I understand inflation, but there's competition USA made at similar price points. So I'm buying nothing. I don't like the Flint and Tinder, Rogue Territory and the 3sixteen is sold out. Maybe next year. I have a symmetry issue. If you have one bold front pocket it must have a second that matches. I also prefer the Type 3 fit is why Iron and Resin or 3Sixteen.

Hey, Andrew! The flannel-lining on both feels similar, and that is to say they feel like a worn-in t-shirt. Pretty comfy to be honest. I can't really figure out the sizing of the Flint & Tinder one. On their website it says 'chest 39 is an M' . But then again, you use an M size, and you have a much larger chest. I'm 98cm, which is about 38,5" , and i'm also pretty slim at 65kg (143pounds) and 178cm tall. It doesn't really make sense for me to have the same size as you. I don't understand why they don't measure it properly, like most manufacturers, by the shoulders. I think i should get an S, but it's a gamble, considering it'll be an overseas shipping.
@rockymtnstyle

Yeah I think that they aren't providing the actual measurement, just saying if you have a chest of X inches you should buy Y size. The medium itself is more like a 43.5" from pit to put. It works for me bc I wanted a slightly snug fit, but I'd 100% go small if you are 98cm chest. Good luck!

And after all of this all you had to do is try them on and let us see how they look in person, but no, we are no smarter then when we started

You win some, you lose some. Did so many other videos wearing them I guess I just forgot to include that footage in this particular one.

Well that's embarrassing... Can't believe no one else brought that up! Sorry about that. 5'8.5 185-190 lbs. Not sure on shoulder measurements exactly, but they are thick. Lol. Thx for taking the time to let me know. I'll put the info in a pinned comment later today.

Dude, put the damn jacket details in the description so someone doesn't have to spend several minutes jumping around trying to find out about the size or color. It's mind numbingly frustrating when you're just trying to research or find basic info and multiple KZfaqrs do this, so something that should take 2 minutes takes 20. Then it adds up and you're on the computer for an hour when it shouldn't have been necessary.
