When I can manage to connect to scammer's PCs, I will often see them running their scams. I will often warn their prospective victims and this video outlines a case where I successfully warn someone that they are being scammed, but in the second case, I wasn't able to help and I'd like some opinions on what I could perhaps have done better.
I'd appreciate any comment you might have; perhaps I'll be able to stop the scam better next time around.
If can possibly sponsor me, this is my Patreon link: / jimbrowning
My one-off PayPal link is broken - I'll have a replacement soon.
Many thanks if you can support me!

Trouble is the police accept bribes and these evil scammers hide behind legitimate companies, and these evil scammers are based in India. And some behind dangerous organisations. The only way we can stop these evil people is to inform our relatives, friends and elderly neighbours, and give them our phone numbers and say put the phone immediately down and call us when they have these evil scammers calling them and not to call any numbers before speaking to us first.

Jim, with old people keep it simple. Perform these steps: 1) "I'm a fraud investigator." 2) "Turn off your computer." 3) "Here's how to block the scammer's number." 4) "Do not answer unfamiliar numbers for a week."

To deal with strangers once you are already on the panic. It is not an easy task. You have to make people make the right decision. Call a friend or family member they trust. If no one send them to the right place. Whatever it is. Police or Bank. But Jim, you won't be able to save them all. You have all my respect for your work with the second victim. As a former tech support advisor I want to thank you for your hard work. With the second caller you make one very big mistake and it's a common thing that tech savvy people tend to do. While you're trying to be polite and calm you're bombarding the person with more tech talk and blurting out every ounce of the scam because you're trying to help. The problem is you're doing one thing the scammers also do, and that's throwing jargon and lots of information at the person at once. This person is not tech savvy. You have to understand your audience here. The simplest explanation is the best. Stop talking for 99% of the call and actually have a conversation with the person. Ask them to speak to you with their thoughts and do not over communicate anything beyond what you think they can comprehend in that state.

@Ign.C
@Ign.C 4 жыл бұрын
Jim, if you're calling the victims, I'd suggest to strongly emphasise the fact that these people are criminals/thieves, trying to steal money. Most elderly people (with all due respect), like the second victim, may not understand all that gift card thing and how the scam operates - it's a lost cause. You should state clearly that the scammers are criminals, and should not be listened to.

Agreed. You need to use simple 1950's language. "Criminals" is good. "Fraud" is another. "Trying to take advantage of you" and "cheating you of your money" as well. Also I'd ask if they have kids who can come to the phone. I also like the term "con man" as it's kind of retro and very much the language of that generation.

I've learned (working customer service) sometimes the best thing to ask is "what is it that you don't understand?" I remember hearing Thomas asking you if there is anything you can walk him through and help him and you told him that you’re reluctant to do so because you’re a stranger to him also…. I think that was the moment you really could stop what was happening to Thomas, because at that moment he expressed his trust in you and invited you in…. Once this is done, take in your computer and have it cleaned, get a good security" "don't send money, these are scammers based in India, they're evil, refuse any calls/block their calls" end of story.

@@jt.9003 The point I think he's trying to make is just, "don't trust strangers. For every good Samaritan there is out there, there are dozens, if not hundreds of others trying to take advantage of you, and the only way you can protect yourself is to trust the ones you know: a good friend, the bank's workers, the police." There isn't a Jim Browning in every call or email, there to protect you when you're not sure if you're even being duped, let alone how to protect yourself if you are. I think he was really trying to drive that idea home. Unfortunately, a lot of people, particularly confused or elderly individuals, respond more firmly to a black-and-white instruction of "what to do," rather than the gray area of "here are your options, and don't just take my word for it."

This is infuriated to me. What a bully! I learned about computers & internet in college. Taught it to my mother. We both sell on Ebay. She took it further & sells internationally. She is computer savy in ways beyond me now. I'm in my early 50s and she is in her early 80s. I am thinking about how a scammer could manipulate her as she is someone with experience.... and that there's others that do not have experience. These scammers not only wipe out the accounts of elderly people, but future generations that would receive an inheritance ... a bright future. Thanks for all that you do. Screw the scammers!

hi Jim, I know this video is a bit old now but I'm just getting around to your channel. I'm trained as an EMT ER nurse and ICU nurse. i see a fair bit of trauma and shock and the second guy was in emotional shock from all the yelling from the scammers. My advice for the future would be when you get his attention, don't hang up. just be there, you don't have to talk a lot you just have to block the line and protect him from the incoming harassment. do this until they can regain their composure. then in slow small steps walk them through the process of fixing it. it may take time, but walking them through each step of what to do will be much more valuable than explaining everything quick and fast. one saying I always think when I'm flustered is that this is not my emergency, I here to help. if you can slow down and never leave the phone I think you can prevent this from happening again. You're an amazing person and I wish I had your skillset. keep doing what you do. contact me if you have any questions about talking to people in emotional shock.

I love watching your videos over and over Jim. You are a literal saint for doing this. Its sad to say it, but the majority of the elder generation are completely illiterate when it comes to technology. Although we joke when Nana says we're a god for changing the TV to HDMI-2, it comes quite easy to us as most of us have grown up with it. Last time I visited my Grandparents, I had to show my Grandma how to find her playlist on KZfaq on her smart TV. It took me, no joke, 20 minutes to show her. I wanted to make it so clear that when I leave she could find it by herself. I just did it over and over again. When it comes to the elderly, it was perfect in asking Thomas if he had any friends near him. I would have gone one step further and ask if he had any children or grandchildren in the states/UK (I'm guessing) that you could contact to explain the situation to them so they could explain it to him and what was going on. He definitely needed someone he knew to explain it to him and possibly show him on skype/facetime. Also with the 'scammers editing the bank page', I was watching and and I could just tell that none of it was sinking through to him. I always like to relate with the elderly on something they would be able to grasp. I would have said "imagine your bank page is on a piece of paper. The people that are calling you are pretending to erase/rub out the real information and fake it by writing their own information". None of this comment is intended to be patronising or condescending, it is meant to highlight the reality that the elderly are vulnerable when it comes to technology and are taken advantage of because it. Again, thank you for what you do Jim, and its nice to see that there are a lot of like minded people who are with you as well. Take care.

Agree. "Fraud Investigator" is perfect. Please remember when dealing with older Americans that may have limited comprehension due to poor hearing, mental health diseases such as dementia or Alzheimers, etc., and a lack of exposure to your charming accent, that clarity and firmness are needed. Be clear and don't beat around the bush. If I was talking to that man, I would have said "The Indian guys that are calling you about money are *crooks* and they're trying to stealing from you. They are con-men and dirty liars. Don't deal with them." This sort of clarity may seem inexcusably impolite to a person cultured in the U.K., but to an American, particularly an older man like Thomas, it makes perfect sense and they will respect you for being clear. Don't be so worried about manners in such a case. Also, please remember that there are next to zero social services or carers in the US that can intervene in this type of case. Americans have learned to watch their own backs and not expect any help, so be clear that you have the agenda of destroying these liars' ability to operate and you have the right to intervene. No one in the States will fault you for that, Jim. Keep up the good work.

In their defense, people prank call the police, when someone says "I am watching this person get scammed on their computer" then he's NOT a witness they can consider 100% If someone said "i'm watching someone get stabbed right now in front of me" they'd check it out, they'd probably check it out if Jim was in the same house as Thomas. But he's not, so it seems to them like someone is calling to claim someone over the internet is getting scammed. It'd still be best if they checked EVERY call and there's been more than a few instances in history where big crimes could've been prevented if they had, but in this case it really sounds kind of weird.

Having heard of Jim talking to a victim or even a scam center employee when exposing them. He gives the vibe that he is extremely calm and calculating person. If you were now calling a police and saying in a calm voice "Hello, I have reason to believe that a person is being scammed" in that voice, I would not be thinking that there is much of an issue. While probably you would not call to police and say that someone is being stabbed in such calm voice. Those are cues that are picked up and police can think of it as a prank call unfortunately.

I think he just suffered from information overload and just didn't know what to do with the information you gave him. I think next time, it might be more helpful to breakdown exactly what's happening here as succinctly as possible. Don't spend so long explaining the whole process to them, just emphasize that they're being scammed. Ask them what it would take for them to believe you, and work on their terms. Take it slow, and explain to him your credentials from the get go. Of course, you can't save everyone, but I think this might help with these more obstinate types.

Human=Parasite We were presented with a fork in the road one was a path of symbiotic existence along side the many life forms on this planet and in the universe (alien life is statistically guaranteed) that was the road we did NOT take, instead we opted for path number two PARASITE which consumes and destroys ALL THAT IT SURVEYS! True there are a few stragglers left over... a few good souls, but they are a dying breed soon to be extinct (if not already). Don't let that upset you though! It is almost like it is built into the genetics of life itself, eventually our ways will catch up to us and wipe us out something fierce, the planet will recover so will the natural order of things and Terra Firma will have purged itself of a nasty infection AKA Humans. Keep in mind HUMAN existence from the first one born to the last one even if you assume the last one dies a thousand years from now, is not even a SINGLE percent.. NOT 1% of the history of Terra Firma, she's been around for a hell of a lot worse then some puny humans with delusions of grandeur, and she will be around for LOOOOOONG after we wipe ourselves out. @@MrsBees This gentleman is dedicated, patient, kind, and altruistic. I am sure that his inability to do more was incredibly frustrating and falls under the axiom of no good deed goes unpunished. In this case, the punishment is an infuriating sense of impotence to witness a crime in progress and be unable to stop it. I had a neighbor whose wife was disabled, demented and confined to a wheelchair. Once upon a sweet summer evening my wife and I heard the sour sounds of him beating her wafting on the breeze through the open the windows. We are both mandated by our state to report suspected abuse by the boards from which we hold professional licenses. We conferred, agreed and made our report. The police came out talked to our rich neighbor and subsequently came to question us as to why we were hassling such a fine upstanding citizen. Of course, the relationship between us immediately soured and it wasn't long afterwards that our landlord, a family friend of the abuser, asked us to leave. The police are useless in situations such as these. Call Adult Protective Services. Not trying to armchair quarterback. Just trying to help for the future cases.

@Kyarrix
@Kyarrix 3 жыл бұрын
That is an extremely condescending point of view. People will not accept help if they feel they are being spoken down to. Wouldn't you resist directions from someone who spoke to you as though you were simple minded? Your belief that seniors are so out of it that for them computers might well be magic is also factually inaccurate. Many seniors are familiar with computers and use them everyday. It also depends how you define senior. Bill Gates, for example, is 65. If you were to look at him you would think he's a typical older person but I'm fairly certain he knows more about computers than you do. Rather than assume a lack of knowledge based on someone's age, ask them what they know and take it from there. The reason Jim is as successful as he is precisely because he doesn't talk down to them.

@@aldproductions2301 You did see what the person I was responding to said? They specifically said "to help seniors always keep things extremely simple" because technical terms are "like magic" to them. They said ""No need to explain technical terms, computers are magic to them." This is extremely condescending. What is an "old" person? Someone who is 50? 55? 85? At what point is it okay to speak to someone as though their age equated to them being simple minded such that technology is "like magic" to them? No, sorry. Let's not talk to older people as though they've lost their wits as soon as they hit 60. Or 70. It's possible to offer a simple and straightforward explanation to a panicked person without going that extra mile and assuming that because they are older we should "keep things extremely (extremely!) simple" and that there is "no need" to actually explain anything to them, after all "computers are magic to them." How do you not see the ugly condescension in this? Reading that comment again I feel the same way I did when I first read it - dislike and distaste for anyone who would make that kind of blanket assumption about people based on age or any other characteristic.

@Kyarrix
@Kyarrix 3 жыл бұрын
@@fallingspark2258 Thank you for the explanation. I understand how it works..The point I am making relates not to whether seniors are tech savvy but to the condescension in the comment. The comment isn't addressing anyone, it is specifically directed at older people. Read it again. When you say "No need to explain anything, computers are magic to old people" you are making an unwarranted generalization. It's similar to any other generalization based on a trait. If you were to say, no need to explain the ins and outs of politics, women don't get that sort of thing it's like magic to them, you'd be making a similar type of statement. Do you see the parallel? Making an assumption as to what someone knows or does not know based solely on their status as a member of a group is wrong. Women, older people, Christians, Black people, any group. I understand that anyone technically savvy will probably not be taken in, when you say hence the comment, you are missing the point. The comment doesn't say to treat everyone who is not technically savvy this way. It specifically says to be "extremely simple" and to avoid technical terms or details because "computers are magic" for older people. Older people specifically. Not anyone in this situation, not any person being scammed, but only older people. People get taken in by scammers regardless of their age,.vulnerable people are vulnerable regardless of age or technical background. Treat people with respect. Don't assume that someone being scammed requires an extremely simple approach. Don't assume that they view computers as magic. If you're trying to help someone in that situation take it on a case-by-case basis. If the person is panicking, then of course don't overburden them with details, you can give those later, but also don't speak to them as though they're simple-minded because that does harm too.
