Menopause does a number on thyroid function in a variety of ways, some of which aren't captured by routine blood work.
Thyroid conditions are extremely common in women, and especially in menopausal women, so every woman should know the symptoms of thyroid disease and get checked.
In this talk, I cover common questions, including:
* What does the thyroid do?
* How does menopause affect thyroid function?
* What are the symptoms of low thyroid?
* How do I get my thyroid tested?
* What if I have normal blood work but still have low thyroid symptoms?

Oestrogen receptors on the thyroid, and thyroid receptors on the ovaries. I'm learning new things all the time. Thank you so much 💛

I wish I'd known this 10-15 years ago. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and developed a goiter at 45. No one mentioned anything about a correlation with menopause. When at 55 I asked a female gynecologist if having Hashimotos would make any difference with menopause, she said no, absolutely not. I was on birth control until I was 56, and then put on Provarin as soon as I stopped, which sent me into a tailspin. Two years later I am still trying to figure out relief for symptoms. Thank you for speaking about this and sharing your expertise!

Did your goiter cause your voice to be mangled? Change? Sound ruined..? That’s what I’m going through right now.. finally I think made the correlation

Thank you so much! Auto immune numbers were low yet were there. I did no other testing but I’m beginning to think it’s thyroid! I really love your approach. Wish you were local for me!

Thank you so much! I had noticed that my TSH has gone up in the last two years (still within "normal" range for my age, but no longer optimal) and had wondered if/how it related to perimenopause. This is the best information I've found on the topic so far!

God, I wish someone would tell us what the optimal estradiol levels. Especially for those of us who have to do all the work for our doctors because they don't know anything.

Can we heal our thyroid if we can heal our leaky gut? Also, are there any symptoms to tell if we are overdosed on Estradiol? I'm perimenopausal and on .05 transdermal Estradiol patch. My TSH jumped from 2.3 to 4.3 in the past year. My doctor doesn't want to do anything because I'm "still in the normal range". Thank you! This was a very informative video!

This is so informative!! I have been on thyroid replacement medication for the last 30 years. I am 59 and going through the motion of finally getting on HRT. My gyno doctor is one of the few here in KC that prescribes HRT, but I asked him if I need to worry about HRT affecting my thyroid function in any way and he said there is no correlation. I just wonder if I need my thyroid levels checked more often while starting HRT. Also when you say that the Estradiol levels are really high this will suppress the thyroid, do you mean that it could cause hypothyroidism ( high TSH) or did you mean it will suppress the T4? Thanks!

Thank you for this information. A woman who is taking levothyroxine as a replacement therefore must increase they're dose to use estrogen only therapy. Will TSH level in labs be lower or will it be the same as the dose used to keep thyroid function stable when estrogen is used?

It’s actually lack of progesterone and excess oestrogen or oestrogen dominance that tend to cause Hashimoto’s. Just saying…

what about someone who has no thyroid? I had surgery back on March since that my period is been out control, spotting all the time snd this month i have a very long very period. My TSH is kind low and my endocrinologist will not increase or decrease my levothyroxine? So frustrating 😡😡😞😡

My TPO antibodies are very high. (All other thyroid labs are registering normal)I’ve dropped the antibodies to just over 800. I’m on the lowest dose of estradiol and on progesterone. Could all this be causing my antibodies to be high

I'm confused -- Dr. Gersh said women over 60 shouldn't take desiccated Thyroid because the T3 levels could be too high and possibly cause Afib. I thought I heard her say they should take a Bioidentical form of T4 by itself. I just talked to a compounding pharmacist, and he said there is NO Bioidentical T4 by itself. It would have to be synthetic.

Why doesn’t your pcp know this when you get a yearly physical? I’m 67. My hormone doctor has me on 20 mg of compounded Lyrothyronine.

Endocrinology is complicated. What is stupid is that endocrinologists also don't understand menopause so they tell you your estrogen is unrelated to your thyroid, which is nonsense. I had a thyroidectomy and i am in menopause. On hrt, I need more levothyroxine. One thing: there are blood levels and then there is receptor sensitivity. Higher blood levels doesn't mean you will feel better. Being metabolically overall healthier will help with receptors. You may not need as much if you are metabolically healthier, that is my experience.

I’m staying away from synthetic .. I’m trying to get away from the horrors I’m taking. I just had my dexa scan.. it’s good. What do you say is optimum estradiol.
