Thanks for the comparison! You didn't mention the elephant in the room though: the HP Prime comes with a touch screen, the TI Nspire doesn't. In my opinion, this makes a huge difference in terms of ease of use.

Watching Mr. Arrington row the TI cursor across the screen to change tabs was interesting. It was also familiar since I own an Nspire.

Good video and solid comparison. As a person that's been using an HP 48SX since 91, the layout of the Prime is almost identical. You had mentioned button placement preference, HP is sticking with the placement that HP calculator users would be familiar with. That doesn't make it better or worse, just who the layout tailored for. I prefer the ergonomics of the numbers being at the bottom of the calculator but I use it mostly for basic number crunching.

Same! My trusty hp 48SX just lost activity in the rightmost column of buttons after 30 years almost to the date. So sad, because I loved that calculator. Went out and got a prime (G2) immediately and loving it right away (apart from the nearly impossible to remove case). Feels so right for me and amazing that it’s actually 1000x faster than the hp48.

I agree with most of your conclusions with a few personal preference differences. That said here's a pro tip for you. The viewing issue with the HP Prime could be easily resolved by adjusting the contrast on the HP screen. This is accomplished by holding down the ON button while tapping the + or - buttons to change the contrast(brightness) as desired.
@tookitogo
@tookitogo 11 ай бұрын
Sorta. The HP Prime developers have stated that for some reason I now forget, they actually use a display installed upside down, which does affect the display contrast negatively. No contrast adjustment can eliminate this. It’s something I wish they’d fix - I’d buy a new one just to get a better screen. (Of course, these days I wouldn’t mind them putting in a 640x480 pixel display with double the resolution, since the hardware could easily handle it, and it’d make text so much easier on the eyes.)
@MrWaalkman
@MrWaalkman 6 ай бұрын
@@tookitogo The developers told the factory that they had the display in upside down, and the factory ignored them. It boils down to a factory manager being too stubborn to do it correctly. That said, I had a G1 (I gave it away since I had upgraded to a G2), and I have two G2s, I never noticed.

@@MrWaalkman Factories don’t decide how things are designed, the engineers do. It was some higher-up at HP who ignored the advice to flip the display around. I just forget what the justification for it was. I read it, just don’t remember anymore.

Good Attempt Mr. Arrington, it is nice to see people talk about higher mathematics and the best calculators that are available. Unfortunately, you have compared the wrong calculators. The HP Prime compares against the TI Nspire CX II CAS ( Black calculator ) NOT the non CAS version ( White calculator ). There is a huge difference between the CAS and the non CAS in regard to higher functionality ( Derivates, Integrals, Algebra solve, Series, Systems of equations, etc - that solve symbolically NOT numerically ). The HP Prime has all of this the Nspire non CAS does not. As well, when you turn on the TI you do not have to open a document and add graphs or calculators. You can go directly to the calculation or graphing screen by hitting the scratchpad button. There is a third alternative for you to consider as well, Casio makes a calculator called the fx-CG500, that is a CAS calculator. It has some great abilities and a very large screen, but is a bit less powerful than the Prime and the Nspire and has a more limited keyboard.

Extremely important. Could you share some insights regarding the correct comparison? Does the HP Prime v2 still win or not? Something that was not mentioned is that the TI-Nspire CX II CAS has a ready-to-use alphabetic keyboard. How can a user type on an HP Prime v2?

Unless you need to be working with extremely complex applications both these calculators are not very user friendly. However, if you want maximum power, these two are it. For most people, a Casio CG50 or TI-84CE will meet most of your mathematical needs. And they are much more user friendly.

I found the HP Prime to be very intuitive to learn, for the most part. I can’t say the same for the nspire. When I sit down at one of those I don’t know where to begin. I was able to figure out all the everyday use of the Prime without the manual. (Background: I grew up with classic TI scientific and graphing calculators, like the TI-86.) I also find the nspire’s mouse pointer to be exceedingly annoying to use. The Prime’s menus and stuff are very easy to use thanks to the touch screen.

For me, it is nice to have a TI-84+ as apk for android. I can use it for drawing graphs, and I also found an apk for the hp prime. The TI 84 plus fills the screen, for the prime I need a touchpad pen as quite small on the screen, but it has a working solver, the magic of calculators.

The HP prime looks very promising, it seems to be very fast because of different chipset and if you have the budget to buy it, why not - but if you have a limited budget or if you want the real deal, I would recommend the TI NSPIRE with CAS (red colored with CAS, not the white one without CAS) and the Casio FX CP-400 (also a CAS calculator).

Yeah, in terms of raw computational power the Prime just doesn't have competition. Its processor is 3 generations newer than the one used in the nSpire while clocked over 30% faster.

@@4TheLoveOfGadgetsNope. There is no special teacher edition of the calculator hardware itself (just teacher bundles, but they’re still the same color as student devices). The bird’s eye views of the screens are frequently impossible to read. You need to use fixed exposure that you set specifically to the brightness of the displays, and fixed focus, also focused on the screens. I don’t know about the nspire, but on the Prime, you can use the HP Connectivity Kit software on your computer to stream a video feed of the calculator’s screen to your computer screen, where you can capture it using screen capture software. (Or screen capture the HP Prime emulator, which is also free.)

I have both of them, as well as a ton of other TI and HP calcs (as for my favorite, the HP is the one that gets used). And I have plenty of Japanese ones, a few Brits, and some Russian ones. But I think that my favorite is my SwissMicros DM42. And I do like the form factor of the TI-92+, it is simply a thing of beauty.

I wanted very much to watch this video but with the calculator screens blown-out by severe over-exposure, it made it unwatchable. You can't even see what you are doing or what the calculator is displaying! Why didn't you simply use fixed-exposure and fixed-focus. If the there wa a disparity between screen brightness, that's adjustable. I really think you had a great video in content but maybe you can do an update and not have the screens blown-out so bad...

The Prime is much faster, and has more RAM and ROM... and a touch-screen. It's really no competition at all. The only saving grace of the Nspire is that TI calculators are very popular in these United States. The graphs do NOT look better on the Nspire. That is a blatant lie. If you push the capabilities of both, you will see that the Nspire will flatten out curves whereas the Prime does not. He's also misleading you by clicking on the Prime to move the cursor. It has a TOUCHSCREEN.
