I cried watching this, and at the moment I wasn’t quite sure why. It wasn’t until a week later when I watched Eddie Redmayne interview Andrew Garfield that I realized: This scene is Larson directing a chorus of his heroes and Broadway legends, performing a song that he never got to see performed in all its glory. Performers, like the original cast of RENT, he never witnessed. The validation of his heroes he never experienced. And now all these people singing in honor of him, using all their strength to cast their voices into the universe in hopes of reaching Larson, wherever he may be. It’s amazing that the visuals and music subtly moved my heart and brought me to tears, even without my knowing why.

Try listening to “Sunday” from the original Broadway cast album. They did some interesting things with volume for this song, so when Jon and his friends sing “liiiiiiiiiiiight” and “daaaaaaaaaaark” the sound travels from left to right. I don’t remember if it also travels from right to left for “dark”? But it’s pretty cool-I hadn’t heard that done before.

To assist those unfamiliar, I’ve listed the Broadway Legends in this scene in order of featured appearance by Name, Notable Show, Tony Wins, Tony Noms. The entire film is filled with incredible Broadway easter eggs, but this scene will be forever special. There’s a collective total to date from the seventeen featured performers below of NINETEEN TONY Awards and FIFTY-TWO TONY Nominations! Andrew Garfield (Angels in America, 1, 2); Phylicia Rashād (A Raisin in the Sun, 1, 2); Howard McGillin (Phantom of the Opera, 0, 2); Chuck Cooper (The Life, 1, 1); Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime, 2, 5); Beth Malone (Fun Home, 0, 1); Joel Grey (Cabaret, 1, 5); Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago, 2, 2); Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton, 1, 1); Phillipa Soo (Hamilton, 0, 1); André De Shields (Hadestown, 1, 3); Chita Rivera (Kiss of the Spider Woman, 3, 11); Bernadette Peters (Sunday in the Park with George, 2, 7); Adam Pascal (Rent, 0, 1); Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent, 0, 2); Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Rent, 1, 1); Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton/Director/Cook-off-screen, 3, 5)

Don't forget Michael Starobin who was the original orchestrator for Sunday in the Park with George and was asked by Lin to orchestrate this piece for the film. Michael has two Tony awards for orchestration (Assassins and Next to Normal) (I know he's not technically "in" the scene)
@CrimsonAceStudio
@CrimsonAceStudio 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelwintermusic Fantastic insight. I was admittedly stretching when I added LMM as an actor in the scene, although he was in technically in the kitchen. But you're absolutely correct that Starobin should be included. That correction brings this single scene to 18 Broadway Legends combining for 55 Tony nominations and 21 Tony Awards. Not too shabby for a 3-minute song! And heck, we can keep this going. Alex Lacamoire produced the track and he has 3 nominations and 3 wins (In the Heights, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen). That would be 19 combining for 24 and 58. Just unreal.

if you pick out the entire cast of this movie, you'll be even more surprised. There is literally zero people, who aren't related to this musical, Jonathan himself, Broadway or Lin himself. In. The. Whole. Cast. Down to the least important third grade characters like "coffee drinker number two". And if you take a closer look at the panel of "aspiring authors and composers" that Jonathan presents LCD Readout to (where Sondheim first appears), you might get a heart attack.

No he doesn’t. There’s a crap ton of incredibly talented people in the industry that the industry refuses to give their dues (I am not one of them so don’t make this about my jealousy) because people like you and every other person who can only associate with brand recognition don’t understand that he is just that, a brand. It’s ridiculous to me that people scream to have new ideas and talent be given opportunity and at the same time completely allow one person to monopolize an entire industry the way LMM does. If any of you knew how many insanely talented people there are in NYC going unheard and unemployed because of this kind of sentiment you’d never make a ludicrous statement like this. But because everyone keeps feeding the beast they’ll keep paying him buckets of money that could be easily shared.

I knew Jonathan and worked on one of his shows a year or two before he died at 35 years old. I used to go to the Moondance Diner before that. This was a great and funny "inside" Sondheim tribute by Jonathan, inspired measure-by-measure by the original music but carefully never duplicating it, with the lyric "And cholesterol" coming where "And parasols" would (and "In a small Soho cafe" coming where ""In a small suburban town"), and beautifully directed by Lin. Now, everyone, go watch "Tony Awards "Sunday In The Park" 1984" and see the original! You'll weep over that one, too.

As a person who dont know about Larson or his contributions to musicals, I watched this movie as a mediocre movie audient and loved the movie bottom to the top. Thank you Netflix for producing this movie and genuinely wishing the whole cast and crew behind the movie all the best. Keep doing wonders.

This made me cry when I saw it, all of the cameos - I have so missed broadway and live shows that it was just amazing to see. But definitely made more touching by Sondheim's death just recently. So incredible... I appreciate this movie so much. Lin-Manuel Miranda has helped keep me sane with all of his wonderful releases over these recent years.
