The joys of moving a big tank into the basement of my friend Rico's Aquarium. Have you moved big tanks? What are some good tips you can share?

I have a new found appreciation for what it takes to move a really big tank. What is the biggest tank you've ever moved and do you have any tips?
@rodwebb5820

There is moving big tanks and then there is moving big tanks in tight places with stairs and no room to move which creates a whole new lot of problems. Luckily the biggest tank I have moved was a 6x2.5x2.5 and that was on level ground so I used a Lift table, a couple of flat trolleys and gravity.

Should have got them to build it on site.. it would cost more but saves people getting injured and a ton of hassle.. Awesome tank though can’t wait to see it up & running..

I'm currently working on a harness and strap setup that will allow 8 people to move up to a 1000 gallon tank with relative ease and very litte strain on the back. Prototype will happen but have to figure out where to sell it. Similar to the harnesses appliance handlers use to move large appliances into homes.

Tanks over 6’x2’x2’ should really be built on site. It’s relatively easy to lift bigger tanks with enough people. The problems start with doors and corridors. You end up with people either end struggling with no possible way of others helping them.

The team work was great and well organised until the bottom two steps. This is where, as they say " if you fail to plan the plan will fail " On the bottom steps a small platform needs to be erected to bridge from the penultimate bottom step to the floor. This will then alleviate the pressure concentrated on the lower corner of the tank. You could even go as far as rollers to ease the free movement of the tank into the basement. Great video and an excellent project to work on, looking forward to the follow up video.

I dont know..big glass tanks have a way of giving way after a few years or so. I think I would be less nervous with central bracing. I have a 240, 35 year old acrylic and you cant make those leak if you tried. I just get used to the scratches-lo.
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 6 жыл бұрын
Scratching can be unsightly but at least it is reparable with some effort and the right tools. The bigger issue I see is crazing and the damage caused by organisms like coralline algae.

Would it be better to build a tank this large in its final space instead of moving it into place? Remove carpets so tanks and ramps can be moved easier? Buy a house with fish room on first floor or walkout basement? Build the house around your dream tank!
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 6 жыл бұрын
I asked Felix from Reef Savvy about having tanks built in place and at what point that makes sense. He basically said if there is no way to get the tank into the place (door size restrictions or on the 40th floor of a building) that is the only time it makes sense. The cost of building on site I guess is astronomically high.
@MW-ut3dk
@MW-ut3dk 6 жыл бұрын
Tidal Gardens I’ve seen Mr saltwater tank and Melev both use cranes and forklifts to place tanks safely but underground basements are the most problematic. Just be happy that your new place is a barn sized place with huge access points! But you had the advantage of building around the tank layout plans (my guess). Very brave of you to put yourself under half a ton of glass-was that after a few beers?

Building on site is an option, but from every place I talked to, it is substantially more expensive. It might make sense if the builder is coming and building a LOT of tanks but for a single tank, it might double the cost.

Custom tanks this size have a wide price range depending on features and the builder. It could be anything from $5,000 to $25,000.

Looks great! What is the thickness of the glass? And by the way, you look pretty tall! Or is the ceiling quite low? lol

Awesome video like always!! question: who build Rico’s tank? I’ll be getting a big tank too and I’m wondering it looks great

It was made by the husband and wife seen in the video. I honestly don't know the name of their company and they keep it down low that they even make tanks. They don't have a website or anything saying they are custom tank makers even though they have been doing it a long time.

As an option, could a tank like that be built on site / in place?
