This is a slight variation from the more well known antron egg. I like this fly because it is far more durable and is a little easier to tie and you can find a wider variety of colors to match local fisheries.
The list of materials that you will need to tie this fly are as follows:
Scud hook or egg hook
White thread (UTC 70 Denier or equivalent)
Egg yarn (Color of Choice
Red Dubbing (I used wool, but antron or other dubbings will work as well)
Super Glue (This is important as it will prevent the back of the egg from getting loose and ruining the pattern

if you want it to look "prettier" on the tied end, just paint the thread with a similar color of the hook and then make some wraps over the flared yarn, whip finish and super glue.

@skylerhardman1227
@skylerhardman1227 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Mcfly foam egg yarn doesn't have the right kind of fibers for this technique. I generally use any kind of glo bug yarn, I have found that Spirit River carries a great variety of colors of the yarn, but I've never found a brand of glo bug yarn that didn't work for this. Hope that helps!

Thank you! I love to fish these from November until about March. Anytime around a trout spawn is a great time. There are other fish spawning too during other months but fishing one of these flies on a tailwater during the brown spawn for example can be exceptionally productive. Watching out for redds of course!

I'm definitely trying this today! For some reason, I can't master the basic egg pattern, as my yarn gets all stringy and thin when I make my cut (even using the straw method). This might be easier for me. Plus, the glue seems to make it all more robust. Thanks!

Bak Draft if you could, it would probably look a lot cleaner! The main reason you finish it in the bend is because you need to slide the yarn to get the hollow sphere shape.

@skylerhardman1227

The UV resins that I have tried don't seem to adhere well to the hook and after a short time the egg falls apart. Super glue is the best thing I have found. That said, if you find UV resin that sticks well to the hook, use it!

I had never heard it called that before but upon researching it just now I must say that you are totally right! I learned this fly from a friend who called it the Antron Egg and I used online videos to perfect the tying of it but only ever found it as Antron Egg. I assumed that we were making variations of the Antron egg by using egg yarn. I hope you understand that it is impossible to be aware of every fly by every tyer, but I do research and I try to give credit when demonstrating someone else's pattern, but in this case I had no idea someone else tied this. Thanks for the information!
