Tie Dye Designs: Inclined Double Side Fan Fold [Ice Dye]

I wanted to use "Owl Bear" from Happy Cat Tie Dye on this shirt, and so I chose some colors that I thought would look pretty with that dye color. The color combination is a different one for me, but I love it!

Beautiful results with this technique! I’ve done ice dyeing for a few years and this is only the second time I’ve seen the ice placed on top of the dye. I do the reverse and find I’ve no issues with dry dye bits; as the ice melts, the dye is dissolved into the moisture and settles into the fabric easily 😊

Thanks so much 😊 Yes, both DUI (dye under the ice) and DOI (dye over the ice) are popular techniques. DUI allows a me little bit more control over where the dye goes, and DOI usually gives me a more watercolor look.

Wow! The design is amazing! So the part that looks black to me is chocolate brown or cedar? I like the owl bear. I challenge you to make an ugly shirt. I don't think you can do it. Everything you make is so cool. Thanks for another great video.

Thank you so much, Allen! Both of the browns look pretty dark. The dark color up next to the Watermelon is Chocolate Brown, and the darker color in the middle part of the shirt is the Cedar.

I like the way this shirt turned out. When you said you were going to use cedar from Pro Chemical & Dye I cringed. I have had some bad results in two shirts with that color. However, it worked out very nice for you. Great shirt Angie. Thank you.

You couldn't have asked for better placement of that white on the sleeves. I think I'm going to have to check out that cedar color. I need some new dark and interesting colors.

So when you do an incline and you batch. How do you keep it from drying out for 24 to 48 hours? Thanks. Love your work.

I usually batch them inside and haven't ever had an issue with them drying out. I also usually add plenty of ice to the top so it is pretty damp after all the ice melts. If you are batching them in a really hot place, you can lay a container lid over the top of the guttering to help keep the air directly off of it.

Oh, I forgot to ask 2 questions. When you put the second layer of ice on did you add more soda ash? Would a shirt come out any differently if the cake molds weren't touching the shirt?

I don't normally add more soda ash with the 2nd layer of ice. I also don't think it would change the look of the shirt if the cake molds weren't touching the shirt. I might not get as good of color saturation because it would be harder to keep the ice on the shirt, but otherwise I don't think it would change the overall look.

Hi! Thank you for checking on me. I had gallbladder surgery a little over a month ago and had to take some time off. I've got quite a few shirts tied up though, and so hopefully I will have some new videos out soon. I feel great now and I'm excited to be able to tie dye again! 🙂
