Hey Angie - Wow. Your talent is unsurpassed. Period. I had no idea what ice tie dye was. Tfs. I have always loved tie dye. Anyone who doesn't love tie dye needs prayers. But wait! Wha-a-d-ya-jst-sa!?! Hot water?!? You artesians. You're such kidders. Wait - what? Not kidding? Really? Please explain this to me like I am a 5 yr old. Besides the temperature, what is the difference between these two techniques? Both of which are beyond remarkable, I must say. Thank you. =^..^= Blessings. *:D

Thank you so much 🤗 For the Procion Fiber Reactive Dye that I use to properly bond with the fabric, you must have soda ash to raise the pH and heat. In ice dyeing or liquid dyeing, allowing the shirt to process long enough (24 hours or so after the ice melts) at a high enough temperature (above 70 degrees Fahrenheit) will bond the dye to the shirt. In hot water irrigation, instead of allowing it to process a long time the water forced through the shirt is at a high temperature. I heat the water to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. So, it speeds up the entire process. I actually posted a comparison video a few days ago if you would like to see it. Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMxygcKZs7fVoY0.html

I really liked how the shirt came out. My thought would be since the folds tend to be less crisp as it moves further out, either do a different fold or scrunch it for a different effect. I have a sprayer have yet to really try anything yet with HWI. Hopefully soon. I’ve been exploring ice dyeing right now. Love the way the dyes can create more of an abstract design depending on what you are looking for. Great job!!

You only let the shirt sit for 1 hour?? Crazy. They recommend at least 4 hours. That's amazing that it turned out so well. I would have thought the dye would have just washed back out since there wasn't much time for it to react.

That's the advantage of hot water irrigation - it doesn't take as long to process because of the water temperature. I've actually heard it referred to as the 1 hour tie dye. I was skeptical until I tried it, but it is really does work that quickly and the results are bright and beautiful.

Thank you! I absolutely would do it again. The benefit of hot water irrigation is that it cuts down on the processing time. After the hot water irrigation process, you can rinse your shirt without having to wait. Some people refer to hot water irrigation as the 1 hour tie dye. It's a great technique if you are in a hurry and need to get a shirt done quickly.

This was awesome. Would you be able to get a similar effect and stop half way up the shirt so only the bottom corner to about the middle of the shirt is dyed? If so, would you just tie off the top half and keep it away from the dye?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
It would be a little more difficult to do with hot water irrigation. Mainly because the very fine mist seems to go everywhere. You could try it though by covering up the part of the shirt that you don't want dyed with plastic or something before you begin spraying the shirt. I would go about it a little differently though. I would tie the shirt more like a traditional corner fan fold and ice dye it. That way you can control where the dye goes a little better. Here is a video showing the corner fan fold tie I am talking about - I reversed this one, but it is the tying portion I am referring to: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtKFqMaV3tavZmg.html I wouldn't incline it like I did in the video, but I would cover up the part I didn't want dyed. You could actually incline it, but put the part you don't want dyed at the top of the incline.

Love fan folds! What is your favorite process? Ice, hot water irrigation or liquid dying?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I can't choose just 1 - I love them all! I think that each process gives a unique look. I have only been experimenting with hot water irrigation for a short time, but it's been really fun. You truly can make a shirt from start to finish in a short time with that method. I love the color splits from ice dyeing - and incline ice dyeing is a favorite too. The dye movement with an incline looks really cool (either ice or liquid incline dyeing). Then of course liquid dyeing is always awesome! Liquid dyeing allows me to have a lot of control over exactly where the dye goes. It's nice to be able to add some variety with the methods. At any given time I usually have several ice dyes and liquid dyes all processing.

Your videos have definitely helped me, and I only just discovered this technique, and as such I was hoping you might be willing to answer a couple of questions. First of all, is there a specific perk of doing this over ice? Also, why is it only a 1 hour wait time instead of 24? Thank you in advance.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm really glad you've found my videos helpful - thank you for watching! Ice dye is still one of my favorite techniques, but the main perk of hot water irrigation is that the shirt can be done so quickly. The Procion Fiber Reactive dye needs a couple of things to permanently bond the color to the fabric: soda ash to raise the pH, and heat. Allowing the shirt to process in an area that is above 70 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 24 hours is what bonds the dye to the shirt when the dye is in liquid form or in an ice dye. That's why it is suggested that you leave your shirt for 24 hours after the ice melts. When the ice is still present, the shirt and dye hasn't had time to warm up. In hot water irrigation the hot water takes care of the heat and bonds the dye to the fabric without the need to wait. I've heard of people microwaving their shirts that they liquid or ice dyed to speed up the process. I personally haven't ever done that. I definitely wouldn't try it in a microwave that I used for food. Another advantage of hot water irrigation is that you can avoid the soda ash soak. For tie dyers that do a lot of HWI, they will tie the shirt dry and mix their dry soda ash with their powdered dye before they apply it to the shirt. The soda ash and powdered dye mixture flows more easily off of a spoon and is a bit easier to apply than pure powdered dye too. That makes dye placement easier and more precise. I haven't taken the leap though and mixed my soda ash and dye. I don't want to find storage for the mixtures when I don't do very much HWI yet.

So far - I don't notice as many color splits with hot water irrigation as I do with ice dye. It's a lot faster process too. After the shirt has been tied and dried, it normally takes less than an hour until the shirt is ready to go in the washing machine.
