A leading national expert on botanical medicine and integrative approaches to health care, Dr. Low Dog challenges America’s healthcare system. She advocates for a holistic approach drawing from the best of traditional herbalism, nutrition and modern medicine. She shows how nature-honoring lifestyles can address and prevent these problems and weighs the efficacy of alternative modalities including medicinal herbs.
This speech was given at the 2001 Bioneers National Conference and is part of the Ecological Medicine, Vol. 1 and Indigenous Essentials, Vol. 1 Collections.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.

Inspiring! I wondered why I have not seen this till now, and then I thought how did I miss this 8 years ago? Oh yeah I was dope up on pain & antidepressant medication from an left leg injury that had me immobilized and could concentrate nor attend an event like this. Now at 62 I hope it never too late then never, thank you Dr. Low Dog for giving me the inspiration I need to get my life back.

If you want to get the word out title this eat yourself well, use the techniques the big companies use to kill us to open the eyes of the uninformed. Titles like this preach to the converted, keep the average, busy person from clicking - this should have millions of views. Really smart, vibrant speakers, that can heal the world, need to be marketed well because too many in this field forget their message won't be heard if they focus too much on the message and not enough of getting the message heard and understood

OMGs I love you and your channel! I just have to say that as an avid gardener herbal practitioner and a previous student of nutritional science at a university also a green witch with ADHD that gardening does help but it also doesn’t replace or substitute the medication however there is an herb known as Mormon Tea (I must give credit to Native Americans for) that is an excellent natural treatment for ADHD. So if this is in your garden and eaten or drank as a tea etc. it has the exact same effects on ADHD just be sure to research this herb if you choose to get it for dosing as i am not 100% sure it is the same for all. WARNING it also has the same effect of Ritalin on people who don’t have ADHD so please be advised it can be harmful if not fatal if taken the wrong way or overdose occurs. A bit of history of it: it is called “Mormon Tea” (ironically for a group of people who believe caffeine is bad and therefore don’t drink teas or coffee, however some herbal teas are ok they just don’t say which ones) because the Mormon Settlers going West after being run off by city after city and state after state were without knowing it on their way to Utah State. Upon their arrival to a tibe (I can’t remember which one) of natives they were greeted and given friendly advice to avoid the mountains of Colorado traded with them given rest food and safe passage. One of such trades was them giving them this herb as they knew they wouldn’t be able to rest long upon drinking it so they had a very short stay as they were all twacked out on what is basically (second to Aphedra) natures speed. Were all freaked out and paranoid that the “non-light and delightsome“ soulless heathens wanted their scalps and were going to take them while sleeping, lol like they would give them that if they wanted them to sleep. They wanted to get rid of their annoyance of preaching, Bible thumping, bigoted, and child molesting cult is what they wanted. Not to have a religious book crammed down their throats and taught to their children is likely another reason. I would also like to mention that I agree and love everything you said aside from the above mentioned and that some herbs and foods have a higher potency than others when dried vs fresh same with raw vs cooked or steamed extracted etc. It can also be helpful to those of us who live in climates that are extremely arid and as such have limitations to what will grow or stay “good” when shipped fresh. I know this wasn’t exactly congruent or in context with the message you gave it was one of self empowerment self sufficiency and sustainability of the individual to be more spiritually mindful and to pay attention to our body and environment all of which i love and do really agree with however that said without knowledge of what things can be harmful or beneficial or “ not knowing what to do” could be fatal as is doing nothing in many circumstances. I see spirit as 1/3 of the healing process in it we must remain positive and have a feeling of contentment that everything will be ok and work out fine. Spending time in the garden here in AZ for someone who is dehydrated could mean further complications or death. For others it is impractical if it is covered in snow or ice/frost. Could cause pneumonia if raining and cold or hypothermia. Could cause many many problems for people who haven’t studied this. For the most part this is common sense but for those lacking common sense (likely the ones asking “what should i do?”) could find themselves at the wrong end of self care. We also have an inner garden that of which I feel was more intended metaphorically to tend to when you or a loved one is ill. It’s better in my belief to treat at home and not go to the disease infested hospitals or even to a clean doctors office for care as the staff of the office doesn’t need another potential illness spread but if you can’t seem to find a solution at home in an herb store “in the garden” or at a pharmacy then i do recommend going to a doctor or an E.R. It is better that you get the care as needed just like if you are knowingly having a heart attack its not a smart move to go to the garden or pharmacy just call an ambulance and go to the E.R. your garden isn’t equipped with an EKG however your inner garden might help calm or relieve the stresses that triggered the heart attack in the first place so in that sense beneficial. Oh and if you thought of going to the garden or pharmacy for a heart attack and then called an ambulance, please do the world a favor and while in the E.R. Make sure to ask the doctor for a referral to the proctologist to extract your head from your anus. Thank you.
