Born in India, S.S. Rajamouli presents a unique, distinct voice within the landscape of contemporary world cinema. With a wide-spanning oeuvre that includes 12 feature films, Rajamouli is known for his inventive style, epic scale, mythological and historical reference points, and films that evade genre-specificity. TIFF welcomes the director of the recent global success, RRR, to discuss Telugu cinema, the notion of art versus commerce, and his reputation of “pushing the limits of industrialized pop cinema” as articulated by Roger Ebert.
The 47th Toronto International Film Festival ran September 8 to 18, 2022. For more, visit tiff.net

Telugu is one of the official language along with Hindi in India and couple of tens of other languages. An absolute legend, and an all time great filmmaker! Rajamouli single handedly changed the geography of Indian cinema and took Telugu cinema to world wide critical acclaim, which is now being followed by nag ashwin with his kalki 2898. Telugu cinema leading the next big leap of Indian cinema! ❤

I think the anchor here is reflecting that the Western audience accepts the overly melodramatic parts of the movie, which can be seen as very 'Indian,' without cynicism or cringe. This acceptance is because the story and screenplay of the movie were crafted in a way that made the audience feel the genuineness and sincerity of the characters' 'bromance,' which I believe is a universal connection any audience around the globe can relate to. The 'revenge' that stems from it is also easily understood, and the hard work put into the CGI, which even impressed Western audiences accustomed to high-end CGI like in Avengers movies, allowed RRR to be welcomed for its genuine story. So, any subtle or overly melodramatic parts in the movie that are familiar to an Indian audience surprisingly weren't considered cringe-worthy by Western audiences for this movie. As long as a story remains true to the emotions it wishes to portray in its characters, the film can win the hearts of any audience around the world. I'm not sure if the RM understood what the host was trying to say. By the way "Natu Natu" music or at least its dance is not entire foreign for the westen audience, thats because both key chracters were wearing western clothes, the setting of the film is already in a western imprelistic setting, the dance itself has its roots from 1940's american dance movment :kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5-qe7ycsNWwZHU.htmlsi=pQeGzPX3vorU8UNn So im suprised RM is mentioning that he is suprised that the western audience was able to accept the "Naatu Naatu" song. If you think about it universal stories like "LION KING" it was dubbed in all languages and it’s still today one of the most watched movies why? There is no specific culture or human character in the film, but a bunch of animals representing human like emotions(values), that representation helped the audience to relate to these animal characters similar to actual human beings so their internalising of the story was successfully done and that lead to success of the movie worldwide regardless of language or being an animated movie. So if your story speaks to people’s heart with accurate dubbing i guess your film can be sucessfull globally.

What do you think is art ?..an Indian filmmaker that reached a global audience of different sensibilities and different perceptions, or a filmmaker that barely made out of Tamil states .C'mon man . comparing somebody like SSR who sat next to filmmakers like James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and managed to get an Oscar under his direction to somebody (whom I've never heard of until you've mentioned🤷 )is a disrespect to Rajamouli
@naninunna8082
@naninunna8082 14 сағат бұрын
@@kaustubh3171 The Indian film industry is a vibrant tapestry of storytelling that encompasses a wide range of genres and styles. Directors like S.S. Rajamouli have carved a niche for themselves with their larger-than-life commercial entertainers that captivate a broad audience. Their dedication to the craft is evident in the years spent perfecting a single project, often involving family members who contribute to various aspects of filmmaking, like family do costumes, music, story writing, Co producing, etc. On the other hand, auteurs like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mani Ratnam, Balu Mahindra, and Vetrimaaran are celebrated for their compelling narratives that have garnered national awards and critical acclaim. While commercial films may enjoy widespread popularity and the ability to run extensive campaigns, there are countless other movies that, despite their artistic merit, may not receive the same level of recognition due to limited publicity resources. The success of films like 'RRR' also highlights the power of social media in shaping public opinion and boosting a movie's profile internationally. Lastly RRR got award because they did promotions, campaigns, publicity with millions in budget where other movies can't. And RRR is not sent to Oscar's from India I guess. And I can tell you there are plenty of best movies produced but they can't invest that much money like RRR did. And I am also telugu guy which rajamouli own lanuguage, so I knew him.

I don’t like the comparison between Telugu and Indiginenous languages of Canada,Both are completely different.India has always been a country of many languages.Even before Bahubali after Hindi ,Tamil and Telugu are most successful Industries in India.Telugu is the 4th most spoken language in India.Telugu is given Classical language status because it has no foreign influence on it like Hindi which has Persian influence on it.Clasical languages are Telugu,Tamil,Malayalam,Kannada,Odiya,Sanskrit…, which are like core of India which have more literature than any Indigenous language of Canada.
