It's fitting that David Beckham, football's most famous fashionista, should have a playing C.V. that reads like the tagline for a designer label. From an adopted homegrown hero in Manchester, he became an international icon of the game, one of the most famous people in the world, and while model-good looks, a hefty dose of media savvy and being married to a Spice Girl certainly contributed to his fame, his footballing success was built on an incredible drive and work ethic.

The older I’ve grown, the more I’ve began to appreciate him. I’ve actually taken the time to rewatch his full match (not highlights) performances - particularly from the late 90s with United, which you can all find online on various sites - and you can tell what the hype is all about. A true big game player; led on the pitch with maturity, tough tackler, hardworking box to box menace on the flank - willing to defend as much as attack, technically gifted when it came to passing, shooting from open play and freekicks, and his tactical intelligence (ability to read the game for a player of his age at the time) was through the roof. You have to be a football purist to appreciate a player like him. Too often, do fans tend to have a myopic view on the game now - worshipping players in a certain style but Beckham, in his own right, was just as gifted and more impactful on the pitch than most of his peers; and he played alongside and against legends in the game. I think a lot of people focus on his time at Real Madrid and after; through all the injuries, ups and downs with media and managers, he still managed to put in a good string of key performances throughout, and primarily at the tail end of, his career with Los Blancos. It’s almost similar to Gareth Bale. As a Liverpool fan, I can only hope that Trent Alexander Arnold (who reminds me of Beckham) turns out to be just as good as the man - at the very least.

This is quality for the youngsters who appreciate how famous David Beckham is but perhaps don’t have the full story of how he got there. Youngsters - It’s now a sensible idea to watch some sort of highlight video showing Beckham’s best goals and assists. @@neutralgrounds07 Beckham suffer the similar fate to Ribery in 2013 who also won the treble. They are the best player of that ream at the time. But due to collective greatness at both United and Bayern at the time (overall Giggs is the best player from class of 92. But there is no denying that Beckham is the best player at 1998/1999), their shine was diminished by their own team. People forget Beckham score the opening goal ar the FA Cup final and he is the one taking both corner of the champions league Final wining goal and the goal that seal united PL title because Ryan Giggs score a solo run goal. Same to Ribery people forget his assist to Robben that give Bayern the champions league

Could it be that David Beckham's greatest contribution to his generation was exposing the fickle cruelty that characterises tabloid newspaper reporting, and thus, inspiring a generation of young people to seek news sources with integrity? Embodying the notion that despite the best efforts of others to paint a picture of you with their words, consistent noble action will make apparent your true moral fabric? Or maybe it's that good haircuts get you noticed? Whatever the truth is another fantastic video had no doubt contributed to revealing it. Cheers guys.

Brilliantly, brilliantly said. Been watching all the old games/highlights, during the lockdown. MATE. Beckham was actually world class - like, legit the guy could play. He was a lot more technical, in hindsight, than I remember him being. I think a combination of the media and our own expectations of what being a star player entails - coupled with the emergence of more eye-catching, tricky players who fulfilled that criteria (Rivaldo, Denilson etc) were to blame. Also, it's likely Beckham was a makeshift winger because of his superior crossing ability - but he was really a centre midfielder playing on the wing (it appears so). Easy to see with hindsight!

One of the first footballing idols of mine - watching David Beckham take a free kick is poetry in motion. That technique with the outstretched arm and the body leaning back is etched in my brain forever. As a United fan I'm also proud to say that he'll always be United for Life no matter what and he was vastly underrated for England. What a player
@babitz0r
@babitz0r 4 жыл бұрын
I remember back when he transferred to Real Madrid, that's when he really started to become unpopular. He was seen as overrated, like he can just pass long balls and shoot free kicks and nothing else. He was seen as stupid, conceited and worried more about his public image than football. But when you actually watched him play, it was clearly he was very often trying the hardest on the pitch and he was definitely a huge contributor in the matches he played. If I recall correctly, he more or less single handedly dragged England out of the group stage and into the quarterfinals in 2006 with crucial goals and assists. It was like he was the only one trying. Now that he's out of the spotlight and that he's been retired for a while, everyone seems to have forgotten the gossip and he's appreciated again as the great player he was.

I remember being really annoyed when Kanchelskis left and Becks stepped into his slot on the right side of midfield, but over the course of the '96 season Becks won me over, he was intelligent, he was hardworking, and he had heart - traits often overlooked when assessing a footballer, but these traits helped him overcome his limited natural ability (of say someone like Giggs or Scholes, who were miles ahead in terms of their natural ability), and he instead honed his skill to perfect the few things we was good at, which, primarily, was delivering that cross, and taking that shot. Traits he was truly world class in. The above being said, Kanchelskis at his United peak, wow what a sight.

I find it kind of fascinating. When people accuse of the modern players of being social media stars rather than footballers, and you ask them who do you think caused all this, they probably say Beckham; in a way he was the first one for a long time, if not the first one (you can argue Best was one too, but I wasn't alive at the time to judge). Yet, you will find few players who work as hard as him; he is everything those old geezers who hate modern footballers, want those footballers to be. Tremendously skilled, hardworking, and dedicated to football. He just so happen to be also basically an A-Lister. And he is hardworking on all aspects of the game, a lot of the superstars often take a break on defense (admittedly for tactical reasons sometimes). Beckham will get down and do the dirty work, do the tackles, track back and lead. People who don't rate him think of him as a one trick pony, when in reality he was the complete midfielder. All he ever lacked was rapid pace (and dribble). He have a habit of proving people wrong. You can't win with kids, become the star of one of the most dominant side in English history. Disgrace for England, turn national hero. Surplus to requirement, help Real win a title. Going to be a failure/disinterested in MLS, worked his socks off. Not good enough for Europe anymore, joins both AC Milan and Paris. There is something to admire about the golden boy who don't mind a bit of dirt.

the difference between Beckham and Gazza/Best was that Beckham recognized that he was a footballer first. Both Gazza and Geroge best, arguably, didn't fulfill their potential. Beckham, Messi, Giggs, and Ronaldo all recognized that they were footballers first, and model/celebrity/whatever next and they never allowed off the pitch activities to interfere with their on pitch performance. I say this as a United fan and I think Fergie was wrong in his judgement. Roy Keane never had a problem with either Beckham or Ronaldo. this is one guy who would never tolerate his teammates not putting 110% every shift. He saw how those players trained, their attitude, and their vanities. this should tell you everything you need to know about them.

What makes him all the more meritorious an individual is that he could easily have become a parody of himself, a joke - a Balotelli or a Pogba or a George Best, but that work ethic was so strong, it rescued him every time. I always said I have huge respect for him to come back from 98, his treatment was disgraceful and 99% of people wouldn’t have had the character and the balls to return from that. Legend 🙌🙌

Thanks for the reminder of just how good Becks was. And that's coming from a Liverpool fan as much as it pains me to praise him :).

When you have Beckham on the right side, and when he crosses, you only need to lift your leg a little bit or turn your head to make it a goal. That's easy. . . I forget which pundit once said that about Beckham. But for me, as a person who watched his play from 1998 to 2009 (especially when he was at Man United and Madrid) it was pretty accurate.

I was a 10yo kid in Brazil in 98 when I saw this guy playing, them came the trebble, basically, there were no bigger Beckham fan in Brazil, and I doubt there is still, from that moment on, he was my idol, and if I was going to play, I would imitate him in every way I could...

Always a superb player. He was often overlooked by critics because he wasn't fast enough for a winger and not tough enough for a central midfielder, but teams won games with him in their side.

Talk of that free-kick goal he scored against Greece for England literally makes me well up. The England side were awful that day and I feared we wouldn't be at the 2002 WC. Everyone looked tired and off the pace except for Becks. Popping up at right back making a tackle and then inside left whipping the ball in - he was everywhere and dragged us through that game. After all that running he still had enough in his legs to strike the free kick the way he did. Absolute legend and deserved to win the Ballon d'Or in 99 easily. He's almost under-rated as everyone gets drawn to his fame for stuff off the pitch. But just watch highlights of England and Utd games from 97 to the early noughties and see how many goals he's involved in. I think only Lampard has more Prem goals from outside the box and he played a lot more seasons than Becks. Miss him.

When he went to us, Ac Milan, he was at the end of his career, but we've loved him a lot, he played very well. Fun facts: I've still got a "Mickey Mouse" number where they talked about him, when he was 13, as a brillant future star for English football.

Thing is, his dribbling wasnt the best and there are talents he didnt posses. He was also a superstar and in a hollywood style life. But we also remember how he was disicplined and hardworking, despite his posh background, silencing his critiques and put downers with his performance rather than moaning.
