There was a time when the Caribbean was amongst the upper echelons of world football. Yet the region has only ever been responsible for 3 teams in World Cup finals.
Why did a region of the Americas have so much power off the pitch, yet achieved so little on it?
Has it changed now? Will we see a Caribbean island at a major tournament again? What does Guus Hiddink have to do with it all?

Hoo boy, looking through this as a Caribbean native (from the Bahamas), this is such a really hard pill to swallow. Fun fact: it was actually BFA (Bahamas Football Association) representatives initially speaking out of the bribery of bin Hammam, that led to both his and Warner's suspensions. But besides that, as someone who hasn't seen their nation go as far as to reach the second round of WC qualifiers, I just... can't even begin to express how I feel about these things. I would like there to be an ideal CONCACAF, one that's equal in representation from the Americas and the Caribbean. That may not be the full answer; there are still a host of problems to deal with, but it should be the start, not of a wind of change, but a wind of equality.

Being from the U.S., I want to see CONCACAF help in growing the sport in the Caribbean, that's easier said than done, I cannot imagine what they'd need to do to help, but I feel like they're not doing a great job at all in growing the sport or making it better. Whether that's their actual job or not yes is debatable but I feel like that should be one of their responsibilities.

Hi, im from one of the Central American countries and the truth is that weight have just changed from Trinity and Tobago (Jack Warner) to Canada (Montagliani). This new format, supposely due to the pandemic, just benefits Canada because now they have an easer path to qualify to the WC, the Hexagonal was already defined but suddendly there's an Octagonal were Canada will surely be. With the shorten calendar you should have less games but with the new one theres even more matches! Doesn't makes sense to me. Keep the good work guys and sorry for the long post.
@SKxWinter
@SKxWinter 3 жыл бұрын
If the new formats were made to make Canada have an easier time qualifying then they'd done a shit job of it. The originally proposed one had us (Canada) as the 7th ranked team having to go through the entire knockout round just to get a playoff spot, with the timeline being way too short to realistically push into the top 6. The way it was designed actually screwed us. When it was reformatted after corona it became more workable, but I don't think we have any advantage over similarly ranked teams. Let's be honest here, CONCACAF is really only concerned with making sure the US and Mexico get good television coverage and qualify for the World Cup, everything outside of that doesn't matter to them.
@rodrigorobles3518
@rodrigorobles3518 3 жыл бұрын
@@SKxWinter When original format was made they expected Canada to take the 6th spot in the FIFA ranking, Canada didn't surpasse El Salvador and now they extended the final round from 6 to 8 teams and added even more matches to the calendar when it should be opposite, c'mon
@SKxWinter
@SKxWinter 3 жыл бұрын
@@rodrigorobles3518 I'm sorry, how do you know this? When they announced what the format was going to be (top 6 direct hex) it was almost impossible for Canada to make up the difference since the only competitive fixtures scheduled were the Nations League matches. The only way Canada could have made up the difference was to beat the US twice and hope El Salvador would drop points against weak teams, the Nations League group had Cuba in it, who wouldn't be worth near enough points. It was basically released at a time when Canada didn't have control in their hands to get in the top 6, they needed help from elsewhere. Never mind the fact that the original format was wildly unpopular with basically everyone other than El Salvador and maybe Jamaica. If they wanted to get Canada in they could have just made it an octagonal right off the bat, but they didn't because that's obviously not the case.

An issue with representation is that some countries represent a lot more people than others. Giving equal representation to all countries would mean a 6000 pop. country and 300000000 pop. country having the same representation, leading to people in larger countries having very little representation compared to people in smaller countries. However, going entirely on population would mean some countries having next to no representation. It is possibly best to find some sort of compromise between the two.

I find it strange that it doesn't point out that the population of the entire Caribbean is around 45 million, 2/3rd of which in Cuba, Haiti and Domican Republic. Its about the same as that of Canada alone and of Central America, which has far fewer nations, and dwarfed by Mexico (125m) and USA (325m). It really is't a surprise that the Caribbean nations should have just a fraction of the power despite having the most nations.

They should not have half as much influence as they do. Teams from the Caribbean are not exactly a dominant force on the world stage

Why the fuck is Qatar playing in a caribbean competition ?!? I hate how money is ruining the game. They’re using the cup as good PR ago show off their team so they get recognition on the global scale. They could’ve invested that in their region and fix their public perception over there than to come infiltrate ours

Damn Qatar gets invited to 2 Copa America’s and 2 Gold Cups. I hope a Carribean team knocks them out of the Gold Cup.

It always strikes me how bad Cuba is in football, like terribly bad. They have plenty of great, talented sportsmen, like athletes or baseball players but still suck in football. Why is that?

If there was more focus on football than they'd probably get some good talent, but they're currently still a baseball nation. Venezuela is getting better at football but their most popular sport is also baseball. Which has been seen in the lack of kids playing football, therefore less good footballers coming out of there.
