-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My review of the CT-312 3 in one Tig/MMA/plasma cutter DC Inverter welder. The kind you purchase off Ebay from China and the USA. While Ive not actually run the machine yet this video will let you in on what you get in the box and what you will have to get or have in order to actually start using the unit. They come with most the stuff you need to set it up but will have to provide a power cord end to your 120v outlet, some misc Air compressor connections and of course an Argon tank (required for TIG welding)
Do not trust the compressed air fittings they provide while the threaded components are satisfactory I would replace them as soon as possible.
3 x 3/8" International pipe thread to what ever size line you choose I believe they provide 1/4 " but you can use other similar sizes.
The hose clamps are junk and as soon as you get them near tight enough to stop air from escaping they strip so do yourself a favor and pick some up before you unbox your welder.
You will need a plug end for the power cord a male cord end to go into your house receptacle (standard 120v male) Id suggest 14/3 or better so as not to limit the machines draw and or start a fire. black white and yellow/green the white and black are the 120 push 120 pull the green/yellow is the ground.
When you go to pressurize the system including the moisture filter pull down on the release valve on the bottom until such time as there is enough pressure in the system to hold it closed or it will leak as fast as you fill.
Do teflon or pipe fitter tape the threads on all the connections
I would also add quick connects to the system so you can easily connect and disconnect your compressor from the welder Id also use the ones with check valves so you do not lose all pressure while doing it.
the first few times you pressurize the system get air in the tank then shut off the compressor and listen for leaks if you cannot pinpoint it a spray bottle with a little soapy water carefully sprayed on the connections and then watch for bubbles will show you where they are.
Be careful with the actual pressure in the system too little and your plasma cutter will not work and ruin the tip.
Information on the moisture trap can be found here its not identical but dam close

I have mine wired input for 220 VAC. Works fair for the price. One thing to note is that for TIG there is no current control even if you purchase a separate foot controller. That is, the only way to change the current "on the fly" while TIG welding is to have a third hand changing the current on the machine panel. The supplied TIG trigger is a simple On/Off and the foot pedal control input on the machine is also simple On/Off. If and only if you are very skilled with electricity, the machine can be changed on the inner components to do so, but one must know what they are doing. Also, I recommend building a 2 way valve for the gas input so one can switch between compressed air for plasma cutting and Argon for TIG welding.

Thanks for this information its great, I felt the same about the gas in on the back its very chincy and when I looked it up its actually most commonly used on airbrushing systems nothing bigger which made the hair stand up on the back of my neck I worked with compressed CO2 for many years and you do not play with those tanks they play for keeps. so am I correct that you were able to rewire the innards to 220v? I was not 100% myself so I went with "NO" as the go to answer mainly because as you said you need to be experienced and Id feel like crap if I told someone who was not good at that stuff to do it and have an accident. In my research I came to the conclusion that when I start really welding cutting with this unit Im going to go with the tig peddle as the control is hard to maintain even on the high end units and companies like lincoln etc all suggest using the peddle most of them actually state that in their online tutorials it just gives you greater control and you end up with a much better end product/ thanks again for taking the time to write that out I know I appreciate it :) cheers

I've got this, used it for cutting and TIG welding and it works very well. I was a new to it when I got it and without a proper flow meter when I started I used a lot a argon, now set at 6 LPM it's very consistent. I connected a variable pedal for amperage control though, it's a must have for any TIG welding in my opinion. (Involved taking the cover of and soldering it in via a switch). It has a 5 second post-flow, no pre-flow of gas so I just tap the pedal when the torch is away from the metal then start the arc during the post flow. As for consumables, they are available very inexpensively from places like ebay.

The manual says that compressed air is needed because it is true. for the Plasma Cut an air compressor is needed which implicitly carries compressed air. And someone who is going to TIG weld it is assumed that he knows that he needs Argon. Just like when you buy a vehicle, you know that you are going to need gasoline to start it. You will also need tungsten, nozzles, jaws, etc. to be able to weld with that TIG welder. That is why its cost $ is low, it goes accordingly.

The one I looked at was selling for $350 CDN and the seller is out of Richmond BC. Thinking to grab one, then open it up to make sure everything is to do my own QC: Grd in place, fasteners, Crimps, Upgrade/Upgradable parts and Silastic or Polyimide any components that may look sketchy, in the end it's just doing PM with any kind of equipment that is new to your shop. So shit don't go south in a real big hurry.

I have been planning on it I use it all the time mostly for stick though and Ive used it 120 and 240 with no issues at all to be honest Ive put it off mainly because so many others on youtube have already done it and probably better than myself. I can tell you that between my 3 welders this is by far my favorite its small it works amazing Ive only maxed the duty cycle once. when used with blue demon rods well it blows my Flux Core wire feed out of the water Ive NEVER had to go above 60 on the dial ( I dont usually weld super thick stock.) If your new buy extra plasma torch tips and consumables as you will burn through a few while learning

I'm not a welder so I don't know all the nomenclature but I believe your asking of the knob that sets the output power the higher it is the more power goes to the torch where you set it depends on the material your welding its thickness and the type of rod etc you are using it can actually vary slightly even during a single weld you may need to add more or lessen it off a bit

Argon would be for using aluminum with an ac welder. Argon will work fine on dc steel but too expensive. Co2 is the gas you use unless you think you want to try dc aluminum with helium which I could never get to work.

Hi, I just got my CT-312 the other day and I put a 220 plug on it and was having second thoughts about it because of the wire size but I'm pretty sure you just put the plug you want on it and it figures it out. the instructions say "The power wire at the back of the welder is connected to the 220v AC power supply, no wrong connections". gonna try to get it going tomorrow, I think my problem will be air supply because from what I read plasma cutters run around 60 psi air and my little air compressor puts out pretty good volume of air but I don't think it will hold 60 psi. guess I'll find out tomorrow, if I have air problems I saw where people were hooking up multiple small air compressors to get the air they need. would love a scroll air compressor but I don't have the pocket book for that, till then I'll probably be doing short blasts and wait for the compressor to build up probably won't be cutting anything big or thick anyway.
@kootenayboy

Yes the wire gage was a concern for me as well but recently I realized that these are a different animal than the standard welder and more akin to a a digital HID ballast in horticulture meaning that they sense the power coming in and deal with it appropriately before that I thought it was a 120v only I believe most use a MOSFET system internally and you can look it up to learn if yours is that type most CT-312 are and the CT-312 designation is actually the type of ballast in it not a brand name so it should be the same across the board. the Air is a different thing altogether, I did not like or trust the intake for the compressed air and Ive worked with tanks for many years in horticulture and one tank is the same as the next so while I was working with mostly 20 and 50lb CO2 tanks that all goes through the same regulators and connections and Id not trust it at all the way it comes out of the box (but thats just me maybe) most of these little welders come with airbrush regulators and are not meant for high pressure and you can see that in the fittings Check out my website for more and current information on this welder I did a writeup on them and added some new links etc to data sheets that cover the air intake more clearly than whats here www.kootenayboy.com/tig-stick-plasma-cutter-ct-312-welder/ I hope this helps KB

Don't rent compressed gas tanks, unless it is something you only need to use for a short period of time. Gas is sold with tank exchange. They have piles of filled tanks, and swap with your empty. Then once they have enough empties, they refill them all. Any decent gas company won't charge you for a pressure retest on a particular tank AS LONG AS it is there tank.
@kootenayboy
@kootenayboy 2 жыл бұрын
thats kind of what I meant about renting the tanks sorry if I was not clear on that. I used to handle airliquid tanks $50 deposit on the 20lb $100 on the 50lb plus the cost of gas then swap empty for full + cost of gas its the only way to go unless you like dealing with inspections static pressure testing recertification etc lol
@movi-clone3953
@movi-clone3953 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with NOT renting gas tanks. Just go to your local craig's list and look for a used tank. Having a tank re-certified (depending on where you live) is not that expensive. In Milwaukee WI we have a certification shop that pressure tested an argon tank for me two years ago for $13. The tank (with an expired certification) was purchased on craig's list for $70. I took my re-certified tank to the local welding shop and they exchanged it with one of their filled tanks for the cost of the argon.

hi kootenayboy. i'm planning to buy one. mainly to tig weld as i already have a lincoln pack 140 mig welder. i also have a plasma cutter ( mastercraft crap than can barely cut 4mm of metal ) and the ct-312 would repalce it. every reviews say it is a good unit and it last. do you still like it ? oh btw don't buy a gas tank it's not worth the trouble. rent it ! i rent one for c25 argo for mig welding. it doesnt even cost 200$ CAD a year with a refill. really worth it !
@kootenayboy
@kootenayboy 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that tip, I have come to the same conclusion renting is the way to go. Our local welding supply shop has the same deal and you don't need to go through all the static pressure testing to keep your tank current. I've not used the plasma cutter yet but what I've seen others do impressed me it's not good for single pass on thick steel but up to 1/4" it's like a hot knife through butter. With all the snow and no shop I've not been welding much. I've also got a Flux core wire feed not expensive but works for my needs Lol

"it's not good for single pass on thick steel but up to 1/4" it's like a hot knife through butter" well that mean its 4x better than my mastercrap i have lol. the quality probably isnt better tho... mastercraft welder/cutter are as good as lincoln and other but underpowered. anyway ive seen a ct-312 open on youtube and it look very easy to repair. i didnt see any electronic component that i never seen elsewhere.
@kootenayboy
@kootenayboy 6 жыл бұрын
ya they are pretty decent, that said expect to have to tinker with it open it up tighten things basically do the final stuff the higher end products do for you. Im almost positive that all these welders are made in the same factories but the ones you get like these are the ones that didnt make the quality control cut and if your adept at tinkering etc that's great as you tend to be ok with saving a buck for a little diy fun. the components are good and when you open it up there is a lot going on in there lol I took a look when doing my endoscope review and was impressed. also you will want a much better system for the gas the one provided is like what you get with an airbrush compressor its light weight and not expensive also the fittings are small and not held in place with anything other than the barbs on the inserts. Mastercraft can be hit n miss thats for sure some items are awesome and they come close to competing with craftsman (my theory that was their goal) while others are not worth the powder it would take to blow them up lol (grandfathers old saying) I got this one for the tig but more the plasma cutter I want to build a bush bumper like the "Move" bush guards and the cutting is my least fave part as Im not set up for it so...... now Im more mature I feel I can have a plasma cutter and not use it for parking meters etc :P :P lol

Wow that thing looks cool, its like my grinder but the dual opposite spinning blades is intriguing Ive always steered away from king canada but not because of personal experience but bias of other people though Ive not heard anything bad about them lately so....... I may look into getting one, how are the blades do they last a while or would you blast through them pretty quick? I have those diamond blades but never used them on steel only stone, tile, cement etc. Like I said Im gearing up for a bumper build and that will involve a lot of cutting of sheet steel with little margin for error and Im not necessarily a certified fabricator lol just a degree from growing up Kootenay ;)

I think I made a mistake and it was not until today I remembered WAY back when I worked in HID lighting they were just coming out with digital ballasts for HID lighting these ballasts were able to sense the voltage and you could plug them into either 110 or 220v and they ran on either no issues. Today it occured to me that these welders are in all probability the same species of that animal and therefore are probably both as stated on the back of the unit itself. sorry for the confusion
@brettwhitla4425
@brettwhitla4425 6 жыл бұрын
The 220v-240v the welder runs on is the 3 wire 220v-240v standard they use in Europe and here in Australia Brown= Active, Blue= Neutral and Green/Yellow= Earth. Not to be confused with American 4 wire 240volt system. I would say the internal transformer in your welder is set up for 110v so I wouldn't mess around with it unless you plan to get a new welder :).

as far as I understand the OC light is when its over heating it has a very light duty cycle if you have been welding for some time in one go and or your unit is out in the sun etc it will hit its max temp or duty cycle max and then shut down until it either cools or its ready for another round. some people get a small fan like a 4" muffin fan or a high output computer or server fan and will mount it inside to vent the heat out and increase the amount of time you can weld or cut and decrease the down time. so far Ive only had it come on once and it was because I was really pushing the machine and had it sitting in the sun one an incredibly hot day

Have you tried any tigging with it? Is it lift, scratch, or HF start?

sadly no, Ive yet to get the argon tank as its now winter and Ive no shop I probably will not get to it until the spring, I did try the cutting with just compressed air but it did not go well and I burned out a tip but that's surly not the welders fault thats on me (My Grandfather always said its a poor carpenter who blames his tools) I will say I want to beef up the compressed air components on this machine though as they are weak but good components are not expensive so its not really an issue . thanks for watching sorry for the late reply

Here in canada in my area there is currently 4ft of snow on the ground and it makes it a little cold for welding without a shop, as I purchased it to make a bush bumper for my truck laying in the snow when Im not getting paid for it is low on my list of fun things to do. winter is for sledding, snowboarding, bonfires and warm cabins with warmer company the welding will still be there in spring.

Works great on stainless, just won't work on Aluminium as that requires AC and this is DC only.

+Kootenayboy , i got a question, i bought the same here in germany, CAN YOU USE THE PLASMA CUTTER WITH OUT GAS, ? DOES IT WORK JUST WITH THE COMPRESSOR? I CNAT FIGURE IT OUT JUST FROM THE INSTRUCCIONS. ILL BE COOL IF U COULD HELP ME. MAYBE EVEN MAKING A VIDEO JUST SHOWING HOW TO CONNECT AND USE THE PLASMA CUTTER, ILL GIVE U AN LIKE AND SUBSCRIVE ;)

Did you ever make the update to this welder? Does it do aluminum?
@terracoilGuy
@terracoilGuy 5 жыл бұрын
You need AC to do Aluminum, this one won't do that. Expect to pay $700usd+ for entry level AC units.

hello, I am very new in this world of welding, buy this machine to learn and I have the doubt of the connection of the light, it is 110v or 120v according to the plasma uses 220v but the truth is not and I do not want to make a mistake, thanks!

Im really not sure with these machines Im thinking they may be both 120v and 220v using MOSFET with digital ballasts you can read about them here www.plasmapart.com/pdfs/GIEPMT232829.pdf

Im not entirely sure what you mean, the welder is in fact 110 or 220 it senses what you have it plugged into and deals with it internally (from what I understand) as for the components internally like the lights etc I do not know Id guess they are 120v but Im not 100% sure

3 wire 110v for America and 3 wire 220v for Europe, Australia... Not American 4 wire 220v

Angus Angus... Yes.. It all gets a bit confusing with different countries using different voltages. My reference was to how some do multi-volt. Double insulated normally is only 2 wire because there is no need for the earth wire. That's how it is here in Australia. But we don't have 110volt. We have 240 and 415 that uses 4 wires.
