Simply: Thank you. Over my career as a technician/engineer/scientist and into retirement, now doing stuff just for the fun of it, the one skill that's always eluded me has been TIG welding. I've watched hundreds of videos and none of them really helped. I don't know exactly why, but this video of yours simply touched all the bases and put everything in order for me. I just went down to the shop and ran a few welds with your lesson in mind and for the first time I can honestly say I wasn't ashamed of the result. I even ran a fillet weld right into the corner of a right-angled joint. (Never been able to get in there!). I had to stop simply because my hands were shaking with excitement. I'm going to cut that bit of weld out and frame it to go on my desk!

@Light Roast Coffee That's awesome, I am actually thinking of going into welding, too. How do you like it? I really like what tig welding entails, I think it's my favorite so far. I research so many videos and information about welding in my downtime. I think I finally found what I want to do, I love art so it definitely helps having that steady hand and I love focusing like this on artistry. Good luck in school or if you're done congrats!

i used to teach welding back in the 70s and he's right, you HAVE to be able to see!! I always told my students, "welding is watching". i've been welding everything you can imagine since 1971 and if you're interested in welding, pay attention what he says!! he is a great guy to learn from.

I'm a 55 y/o newbie to TIG and a home hobbyist. I wanted to add my experience regarding being able to see the puddle. I struggled a lot with arc length, dipping, touching the tungsten with the filler, and I basically hit a wall where I wasn't able to get better no matter how much I practiced. Someone talked me into trying a magnifier or cheater lens, and what a difference it makes! I wasn't even aware that I couldn't see, until I could see with the cheater. After a little experimenting I settled on a 2.0x cheater lens that fits right inside my helmet, and I am amazed at the difference, and the improvement in my ability to see and control the puddle. I still need lots of practice and make mistakes, but some of the viewers, particularly over 45 years of age, may really find they benefit from using a cheater lens.

I'm not even a welder and this was amazing content. He knows how to teach a completely uninitiated person from literally no welding knowledge to understand fundamentals. I actually understood what he was talking about (wire and materials a little less) but the concepts were razor sharp and very clear. Excellent content! Thank you for posting.

I'm 70 years old and was a Boilermaker field welder with 65,000 hours welding but mostly stick, dual shield wire feed and lots of air arc gouging. We do some oxy/acetylene cutting but not so much experience TIG welding as I did not work on boilers where they used TIG on tubes. I welded penstocks on dams but we used 7018 rod. Welded pipe with 6010 root and 7018 filler. Been exposed to submerged arc and other processes but TIG has always intrigued me as it is one of the purest/ cleanest form of welding. I am now watching lots of TIG videos because I want to teach my grandkids TIG welding as they are very interested in cars and they want to learn to weld on things like turbocharger, intercooler, roll cages and stainless exhaust etc. My buddy and I are currently building a restomod older Corvette and I made a car dolly and rotisserie so we can spin both the body and frame together or separate and now I'm enjoying retirement doing hobby stuff. Bob Moffatt is awesome and he sounds so calm he is easy to listen to! Thank you for putting out nice videos!

Being 71 years young, I thought tig may be out of range of things to learn. After watching your video several times, I uses my Son's welder and did some tig that surprised him. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I have duplicated the brown coloration you talked about by passing gas while welding (lol). Oh, that wasn't brown tint on the weld, that was brown tint in my shorts! A very informative video. Thanks for sharing your years of experience.

Long time ago I was in engineering college when I got into SMAW as a hobby and researched different processes, I remember knowing about TIG as a process I'll likely never learn. This video made things clear and made me try scratch start. I'm a certified Tig welder now. Thank you, Bob 😊

I'm just beginning to learn TIG and I've checked out a lot of KZfaq videos. Some are really good, most less so--but this by far the best one I've found. Bob has all the qualities of a good teacher: he's got his topics well organized, doesn't ramble, stays on topic, and he breaks down beginners' mistakes really well. I sure hope he continues the series!

I had some good teachers when I took welding courses. They had plenty of experience in the field. But I’ll tell you, I wish I could’ve taken some courses with you. Every video you make is clear and to the point, and very informative. Keep it up Bob. You need a shirt that says “It Cools The Pool”.

For the longest time I could not see the arc well. I figured it was either the helmet or lighting.. Turned out to be my eyes. Reading glasses and extra lenses in the helmet and my welds got a bunch better. Greatly lowered sticking the tungsten in the weld and touching the rod to the tungsten.. Your emphasis on seeing the weld hits home.

What made a big difference for me was taking my glasses off! I'm very short sighted. With glasses off, close up I can count the hairs on a fly's leg (literally). It never occurred to me how much that could help with welding.

I have a brand new China man built 3 in one, tig, arc and plasma cutter and I now have enough knowledge to do damage with this here unit. Really well put together presentation for beginners. Enjoyed the tone you used. I do not learn in the classroom very well and am thick headed when it comes to listening to someone but you, I could listen to and learn all fucking day bro !! Thank you for a great basic start. I am 71 years old and have been welding as a hobby for 54 years, mostly Oxy and AC/DC arc. While in high school I purchased a used Lincoln 300 amp Ideal arc AC machine and used it to build a Model A Ford roadster. I hate arc welding because it is so dirty, but it gets the heavy work done. I have always admired the clean welds created with TIG but could not come up with the money to buy a good machine, so I relied on my Oxy Asc. for some work that was probably too heavy for it. But with enough heat and multiple passes I got by. Four days ago I received my first TIG machine, an Everlast 256si watercooled multi process ( it is also a 60 amp Plasma torch) I can't wait to get my 220 wired to the garage so I can start practicing the Technics You have presented on this video. And thanks for the advise on taking care of my equipment. P.S. I was exited to see that your video was made using an Everlast machine. I will be watching for your video posts.

Now THIS is how you make an informative youtube video! Thank you sir for showing all of the do's and dont's of tig welding. I'm new to welding in general but extremely eager to learn new skills. My co-worker is getting a tig welder to use in the shop and he doesnt have much experience with it either. With your video and a little luck and patience, two diesel mechanics will be that much better off at doing what they love. Thank you for putting so much information into a 40 minute video.

Did short mig… being deaf.. never understood tig… this video changed everything… caption, caption instructions and demo finally taught me something!!! Thank you so much from a guy in Ky whose trying to get by....I've got a tig machine and of course a mig and stick, just hoping to learn enough tig from you to get a good start on doing some tig.....love your personality and patience, thank you so much, I've got some cast transmission shift levers that have to be shortened, luckily I've got extras. Love your work man, I can't believe that I work every day, now iI am old, pushing 75yrs, have been welding since I used my dad's home giant of a machine that he built to weld stick on the farm, but hey, that thing worked awesome, I ran miles of bead, ha. I'm one of eleven kids, he worked as an engineer and taught electronics at night, when there wasn't any fixing someones breakdowns, or grocery store cold boxes, etc....but we never had a tig, and i always wanted to learn, wish i could drive out for a visit and get a few lessons. Wow. As a Retired Vet who started off welding about 4 decades ago and returning to the hobby, I've got down FC, MMA and MIG and now venturing into TIG. What what I just saw, and how you specifically, calmly and eloquently directed, guided and instructed, I feel 100% confident to move forward and get my attachments based off of your instruction. Hello. Jose, from Puerto Rico. I took a basic course in welding (stick) and I would like to learn TIG. I have to agree with some comments here. Furthermore, I've seen a bunch of TIG welding tutorials on KZfaq, and this by far is the most comprehensive tutorial I've seen. If I ever decide to purchase a TIG welder, this video will be my first stop for sure.

As to seeing the weld pool. I am 72, and learned to weld at night school at my local HS vocational school about 8 years ago. Actually passed my 3G certification (vertical 7018 electrode) only looking at a 'bright light', rarely seeing the weld pool, and yes, I ground a LOT. To actually see better. and since I wear bifocals, I had a safety pair made with a larger frame which gave me more area of focus, and then got the 'cheater lenses' for the helmet (I use a 1.75). It's amazing how much easier it is to weld when you can see a weld pool and move it correctly. I am wanting to re-learn TIG (did a small amount in those class years ago) and your video is most helpful. Thanks for the clear and concise explanations and excellent photography.

Bob this is a fantastic video! The topics are spot on, the clarity of your speech, camerawork, production and editing are phenomenal! Just when I think I've seen it all from Bob. Again I find myself stumbling back to tig basics. I really started getting pretty good at aluminum. Then I thought I was doing so great I can easily try my hand and knowledge with just plain old easy steel like the new guys again. Wrong ! Back to the basics. Thank God for Bob and in the 2 minutes I'm re-learning assembling my basic, air-cooled 17 torch, again, I realized, I don't know shit ! Thanks again Bob. I thought I made a step up, thinking, I got it now. No such thing in any welding process. Thank you again Master Bob. We'll never be better than the Teacher !

I know this is an older video but I want to thank you for your teaching style and you dedication for your craft. I'm just 3 days ago 76 years on this soil and wanting to remove the cobwebs from my mind on one of my skills. I like to make my tools when I can and welding is one way I've been able to do that. I've welded for about 45yrs and don't consider myself a professional welder. I'm now semi retired enjoy welding and building things for personal use, roof racks, brush guards, utility trailers and the like. TIG has always been presented as a SCARY proposition but after watching this instructional video I am going to make the jump and add a TIG to my arsenal of welders. You have a great knack of explaining the do's and don't s that even a beginner can follow and understand those principles and why. It was a real pleasure to watch and learn from you SIR. Bob, Great tutorial! I'm new to this but have MIG'd for years. I really enjoy your methodical instructional techniques that take us from the ground up. Even when you fail to show the visual "failures", its OK because you show the wrong technique well. Thanks again!

I love the way you teach and talk. Nice and calm while explaining everything needed without lots of nonsense. I am about to get back into TIG after 20+ year hiatus so this was a good refresher course.

I was a Lloyds coded welder for 30 years in Harland & Wolff in Belfast. ASME9, MMA, MIG and Tig love watching your vids. Brings back memories of some great guys and some real assholes.

I'm so new to welding that I do not even own a welding machine yet and never welded in my life except for copper pipes and electronics which is more soldering than welding. This is golden info, before buying the equipment.

My husband has been welding for years.. and still learns a little doos and don'ts .. very informative.. I myself have learned a braise or two.. I recommend this video for new welders... Oh practice makes perfect guys.

Your teaching is first rate. No BS & no holes bared approach to accepting that we will all make mistakes - but it is how to move past that is key. And the tip about - when you dip the tip and then get it stick and then stopping and removing the Tungsten from the torch is a massive tip to prevent torch damage.

Just got myself a Tig welder, specifically a ESAB 160...and this is the first instructional video that i saw in youtube. I learned a lot! Now, i have to get me a tank and gas and some nice welding gloves. I only did some stick welding before but it wasnt too successful due to a badly designed arc welder. It was almost a decade back. I am a woodworker but im gonna give it try. Wish me luck! Thanks for the very nice videp presentation.
