TIG welding root pass, and tig techniques for x_ray quality. The TIG method of welding produces a clean homogeneous weld which when radiographed is easily interpreted. A good welder who can produce quality X-ray welds is an X-ray welder. X-ray welder is a tradesman who consistently welds at such a high proficiency that he rarely introduces defects into the weld pool, and is able to recognize and correct defects in the weld pool, during the welding process. This video is about the combination of the constant feed technique, and dipping technique on the root during tig welding. TIG welding technique used will depend on the thickness of the pipe, gap size, and position. On a thin wall pipe, you can either free-hand or walking the cup. This is because you will have a shallow bevel that you can walk on with the cup. If it is a heavy wall pipe you will want a cup size that is small enough to fit between the groves and slide easily. The video gives viewers good insights into placing excellent and solid root passes. You will get to learn about different technical paths that you can explore. With the appropriate training and practice on the operator's part, learning to place the root can become an invaluable skill!

Dip technique will never fail you. I try to tell all welders to never focus on the middle, the bevel edges are the most important. It helps prevent too much penetration. Break the walls and the wire will do the rest of the work.. love the content!

I have been welding in the chemical industry for the last 12 years, and always take 5/32 gap so I can fee's wire from inside. I am starting to try and transition to a 1/8 loose gap to fill with a 3/32 wire. I just get concerned about having enough wire lay in because I have cut my down on wire size.

Curious about your preference for lift arc on carbon but scratch start for stainless. I normally use lift for both if the machine has it. Why the difference?
@X3MTIG
@X3MTIG Жыл бұрын
Hey buddy thanks for your comment. Actually my preference is opposite, scratch start on carbon and lift arc on stainless. I don’t have any issues using any of this two options if available on welding machines. With the lift TIG, you cannot stick the tungsten electrode to the metal when striking initial arc, which is ideal for welding stainless as you want to minimize grinding , and have everything nice and clean , and for carbon I use scratch start , and even if I get arc marks it’s easy to remove them with grinder, without causing any visual issues. Both options works great once you dial in, in my case it’s more of a habit.
@pacebozeman
@pacebozeman Жыл бұрын
@X3M TIG ok yeah i was just curious. I generally use lift arc on everything if the machine im using has that function. I have actually been on a few jobs where the QC wouldn't allow scratch start, only wanted us using lift arc. They were concerned about arc marks outside of the weld zone from guys popping the wire when we arc up.

What angle are you holding the tig wire when you are backfeeding the bottom of the pipe? It almost looks like the wire is parallel to the joint. I’ve been practicing backfeeding, sticking the tig wire through the top of the pipe as I’m welding the bottom, but I’ve been struggling. I’m wondering if it will help if I hold the tig wire inside the bevel but more parallel with the joint as opposed to perpendicular?
