I am not being nit picky I am just sharing all the knowledge I know about welding. The gap there is much larger than 1/8, when using a stick electrode as a spacer make sure to break off the Flux. Measurements on stuck electrodes only refer to the green rod (the musch smaller metal rod inside the flux.) I would also recommend moving a little bit faster or lowering your amps to 95, because the back side is cooked. Your cup walking technique for the root is very good though. My personal preference is that I would not lay wire a root you wanna see the arc melt away the edges to ensure 100% penitration.

On your first root tack, how do you stop the pipe pulling in to offset the standing angle of the top part of the pipe? I put my tacks in and I end up pulling my pipe so I remove the first tack and punch a wedge in to open it back up.

Hey man. I’m in school and have been welding carbon steel and have had no problem with the root. I just started stainless and it is frustrating me to no end with the root. I’m getting lots of cold wire and when I don’t I’m having to much penetration. What should I be doing to avoid that? I run at 90 amps for my root and have been welding like it’s carbon steel.
