I must admit at the time of his popularity in the late 90's into 2000 I was upset at it because he made the game way more popular and the prices started to rise and get ridiculous...in every aspect of the game. In hindsight the dude was probably one of the best things for the game. John Daly and Sergio Garcia, too.

@scottrosecrans This is what links golf is all about. It isn't about manicured fairways and perfectly smooth greens. Take a look at any links course in Scotland and England and it's the same when conditions are dry. Links golf is meant to be the true test in golf, not a walk in the park.

Thank you for helping me understand why, appreciate it.

Seth DiMaria this is not a problem. Overly soft golf courses promote target golf, which imo is the antithesis of golf, although it makes for fine viewing on non-major weekends where tour courses are watered up. But just look to Congressional to see how excess watering can destroy a championship golf course, in 1997 Congressional, which is nowhere near the sea, was nearly as brown as this, while they drowned it in 2011 and drowned the us open’s reputation with it. Then they go too far the other way and get greens that are completely dead and bumpy. Nice courses, dried out, long rough where it will grow, and no gimmicks.
