I was gonna say: it’s his timing as he’s rising up slightly by moving his front hip out of the way as he’s about to make contact, but you gave a better explanation! If I tried this, I’d cold top every iron shot! 😂

As a non divot taker, some of it has to do with trying to protect my jacked up wrists, but I'm also a little OCD, so watching nicely mown chunks fairway being ripped up, gives me a bit of a visceral reaction. That being said, thin to win every time.

Steve Stricker doesn’t take divots. Moe Norman didn’t take divots and used to brag that the course maintainer wouldn’t know he was there.

I agree. With a shallow angle of attack, and perfect timing through impact (clubhead descending slightly while the the lead leg is straightening and the hands are actually swinging up slightly), the proper shaft lean can be achieved and no significant divot is necessary. I say Tiger was not joking, but, as ALWAYS, i could be wrong.

That's Tiger's practice routine. He does take divots on the course. Using the bounce with wedges

I'm only a beginner, so definitely no tiger, but I hardly ever take a divot on my best swings while the mark left by the strike is absolutely perfect and definitely higher than your launch monitor is showing here. I can only hope my low point is past the ball and really need to get on a monitor ASAP to find out.

I grew up playing a course that was hard as a parking lot. Became a picker, something I still struggle with. But, many people like myself can flush every shot on a mat. It's when we go to the course that is becomes a problem. Mats offer more forgiveness for the bottom of your arc as the bounce drags across the floor. Compression is easier. But I think it creates bad habits for some like me. I'm your partner on any simulator! But go out on a wet, soft day and I struggle.

Of course I'm no tiger woods but this is exactly how I like to strike an iron. I don't like the feel of a steep angle of attack. The challenge with this technique is its very easy to hit the ball fat. It takes great timing to combine the rising of the hands and the descending of the head of the club. When I do it right it feels fantastic. The compression is great because of the low spin loft of a shallow angle of attack.

I only really take divots with my wedges. But I tend to only take grass and leave the crown of the plant. But I do take divots. Only if my swing is off.

I don’t think he’s kidding. When I’m hitting my irons flush I rarely leave a divot. I thought it was a little weird until tiger said he doesn’t either. I have an abnormally fast swing for an amateur and an “unorthodox” release of in my wrist, but it works so well for me. Not sure it’s the best advice, but my coach said “it isn’t broken don’t fix it” lol. I’m considering starting to enter tournaments and I’ve only been playing for a year now.

No, he wasn’t joking. When he’s hitting the ball well, he doesn’t take a divot. If you go back and look at some of his best shots on tour, you’ll see that he’s not joking about that.

If you are watching this KZfaq video on ball striking...you should ALWAYS take a divot with your irons...ALWAYS. Because you.. and I are just NOT good enough to do otherwise...Golfers take divots..for a REASON. It gives you a GREATER margin of error in the strike.
