Tim, I guess after all the driveline breakage on the 635d, that now you keep a couple of extra items on hand. They could build indestructible yokes and drive shafts, but something else more expensive would break. Just add that to regular maintenance at least once a year to replace yokes and drive shafts. That 635d is so powerful, capable of pulling twice as much as the other skidders, it puts enormous strain and stress on the weak links. Like you side, the yokes and drive shafts are the weak links and alot cheaper and easier to replace.

From what I have seen, the most important person in your logging operation is not the boss. It is Jay the mechanic and fixit man. You guys better make sure to treat him like a king. And keep some cardboard for him to lay on instead of dirt.

my dad is a 37 yr old iron worker (local 17, cleveland ohio) i started a tree business which is obviously not as big of an operation of what you have, but whenever i had a bad day or the chipper was down or skid steer was down he always said " it either gets better or gets worse" and ssid it with a grin on his face lol stay safe out there!!!

Around here if we want it next day Fed-X Is the only way. Pick up some CDX plywood & cut the sheet in half 4*4 , then cut other half in to 2-2*4 pieces take a 1-1/2 hole saw, bout in center 3 inches from the side. Space two hole out 5 inches, cut piece in between with saber saw for hand holes. Do on the ends of 2*4 sheet both, On 4*4 do all sides, then sand edges till smooth. Then get white or light color oil base paint, give two generous coats , especially the edges. The light paint will get dirty, but helps show up parts, second does not get hot. Three can get oily n wet n just wipe off. Last good long time. Makes it nice for mechanics. With the paint , no splinters , easy to slide on. Keeps you out of dirt ,mud . Makes life really nice 40$ well spent per truck . Just a idea.

it's funny you're having issues with ups, up here where i am fed-ex is about as handy as handing my dog a box and telling her to get it somewhere. i've had boxes go to as far away as texas and say it was at my shop in NEPA..... stuff in ny and the driver swears on the phone its on my porch. ups is always spot on for me and stuff is rarely even showing marks on the box. and that mechanic is a good man! right in the dirt gettin it done and not one complaint

atleast you will have another shaft on the shelf in the shop waiting for the next go around. since it seems to be a common problem with that drive train i'd keep replacement parts laying on the shelf just for that occasion. i imagine keeping those parts stocked would be cheaper then lost production at this point.

Yep, I can believe several got destroyed in transit. I worked many years on a freight dock. A lot of people hired were low paid. A lot of damage can be done by a forklift operator that doesn't care. There was a saying amongst some "It's not going to my house." That attitude always disgusted me. Our larger partner ABF would send us lots of tore up freight. Seems the bigger you are, the bigger the problem. Tim, I'm sorry their poor work ethic or handling skills cost your company money. Glad you finally got that monster going again.

Momma said they'ed be days like this, she just didn't say they'ed be so many of them. UPS is just another company that isn't what it used to be.I'm waiting on a damage claim from them going on four weeks right now.I lost nearly three days of work last week sorting out problems that were caused by two things which sadly are common in our country today-people who lie and people who just do not do their job. I've built quite a few of those driveshafts over the years.Usually the Spicer/Dana part numbers are right on the parts,I order mine through a local driveline shop and use hydraulic cylinder barrel tubing for the shafts. As long as you keep the yoke and splines timed it's not that bad.I have changed those wing type yokes in less than an hour.I have also taken broken yokes like yours, removed the mating flange off the xfer case and used it as a welding jig to weld the broken yoke back together.I bevel them out 100% and preheat to 250-300* and then use either ER70S6 wire or 7018 lowhi stick.Just watch there isn't any undercut and you're golden. It's not a perfect fix,but will run till the parts show up. Good luck and keep your chin up!

Everything you've said makes sense, and I'm going to assume you've done a cost/ benefit breakdown on keeping a complete spare driveshaft assembly (yokes, joints, shaft, slip joint and any steady bearings)on hand. Especially as it does seem to be engineered as the torque limiting component. We do the same thing at my concrete plant "ie drum rollers, PTO shafts"but some parts are just too expensive to have laying around.

Geez! And I thought my week was bad! On the off chance that this happens again I have heard of a technique that could help. Here's how it works: First you find a trail that is as short as feasibly possible. Next you would use your second processor to delimb and top the trees in the woods and then shovel with the processor to the deck. I know shovel logging isn't ideal but the upside is the tracked processor can keep the flow of wood moving. I have only heard about this so don't shoot the messenger.

Great video. finally some level headedness when it comes to brand loyalty. I do a lot of post logging clean up. few of the guys up here are running feller butchers, skidders.... they are done for the season and they lost more money than any one should. Another company runs 8x8 dangle heads and fwd'ers and they are still logging. High mtns of colorado. their equipment is down less and they spend far less on building roads and landings and end up moving more loads with less effort? Respectfully How come you guys run the equipment you do?

Ups insurance is a scam. No matter if you pay for insurance or not they will not pay a damage claim. It can be their fault damaging the package but it is always the customers fault. You ain't the only ones that have been getting the run around from UPS. I told Dothan Powersports to just let me pick my stuff up from now on or ship it FedEx. UPS has delivered to this address for 34 years now and missed aa ship date twice. Their excuse was the address wasn't on record and I needed to call to verify the address. I did and they still were two days later. That put me 3 days on an overnight delivery twice. Six days to get a part the was special ordered and paid in advance. The pubic service aspect of UPS is right up there with McDonalds now........................

Could Tigercat find you a super heavy duty wireless load cell to put on the TC 635D grapple so the operator knows how much wood they have picked up? (e.g Intermercato-intelweigh, John Deere etc) Traction assist the loaded up 635D up some of those steep pitches/ inclines where the tires skid too much with a hydraulic ship cable winch on the back of the yellow JD excavator, or put a blade on the back of the JD 548 with a big winch (similar to the Hass 548 set up) Figure out some type of auto cable pick up and release. Put a hydraulic T bar on a pickup to reach under the skidder to help release and put back the belly plates?

Ever think about getting another 635 if it is so important? Then you would have a backup, or run two at a time.

+Sterff89 yes but another half million investment would be bad risky right now.

Anytime I've used UPS next day air, its been 3-5 days. 2 day has always been 4-5 days. Thats business days. I've moved away from UPS when I have a choice. They're always my third choice now.

Sometimes you have those days dealing with 3rd parties where you dont know whether to choke them, beat them senseless or cry. Thats the ugly truth of having your own business sometimes. You were loosing money hand over fist and they wanted to play "Find your Freight" tag with you. Sorry that UPS threw you for a loop but glad you stopped the proverbial bleeding of money
