before gilbert baker designed the pride flag in 1978, the common symbol for queerness was a pink triangle, which was a reference to the patches homosexual prisoners of nazi concentration camps were forced to wear. harvey milk, california's first openly gay elected official, approached baker for a design as a part of his next campaign. baker's design includes pink, teal, and indigo in addition to the traditional colors of the rainbow. pink meant sex, red meant life, orange meant healing, yellow meant sunlight, green meant nature, teal meant magic, indigo meant serenity, and violet meant spirit. it was a little whimsical because it was meant to evoke hope and celebration. the first two flags were hand dyed by lynn segerblom and hand sewn by baker and by james mcnamara. harvey milk was assassinated that same year. after milk's assassination, the flag design gained popularity and eventually overtook the pink triangle. like a change from looking at the pain and degradation of the past, to looking forward at whatever new, beautiful thing is coming next for us. the flag has been simplified since then, now usually including only the traditional rainbow colors. gilbert baker passed away in 2017. he never trademarked the flag. he wanted it to belong to all of us in the community. it was never just for gay men. it was always for all of us. this woman stands on his shoulders. and on harvey milk's shoulders. and on mine, actually. she stands on the shoulders of every queer person who came before her. she stands on the shoulders of everyone whose blood and tears went into the fight to give her the right to her bottom surgery. she's like a generation out from a time when she wouldn't have been allowed to change her name on her drivers license. the queer community isn't just a bunch of kids and freaks who approve or deny your sense of worth based on changing tides. we're generations of people who share an experience and an identity and who needed a place to call home. look, i get it. she's young, privileged, and impulsive. she's exploring her place in adulthood. i felt her when she confessed that she always felt compelled to seek the approval of her bullies. i believe she was telling the truth in that moment. i would encourage her to share these thoughts with a journal, rather than using the internet as a sounding board and then being shocked when the sound bounces back at her.

her saying "a lot of black people enjoyed being slaves" gave me actual whiplash. edit: yall thinking i said whiplash as a joke are weird. i meant the injury caused by a sudden jerk to the head, as in i was so shocked that i turned my head so fast i injured myself 💀

Twitter is literally the only place where i could say "Racism is bad" and at least 20 people would respond with "okay but hitler had a point" LIKE WHAT??? What rational twitter is Kelly on???

As a black person it genuinely aggravates me that her "apology" about her being quite blatantly rascist was how she read it in an article somewhere because amongst all the other stupid things shes done this is one of the major highlights her spouting extremely wrong and rascist comments about a topic she clearly has never experienced and knows nothing about is such a brain dead move and the apology somehow made it worse to me

Her: “I transitioned at 14 because I felt I was in the wrong body!” Also Her: “You should transition after your 18 and also have a lot of therapy beforehand to make sure it’s right for you!” Hypocrisy, blatant hypocrisy.

Her saying "a lot of black people enjoyed being slaves" as a white history (specifically slave era history) researcher made me audibly gasp and back away from the screen 💀

I remember parroting what my parents said politically. Then in seventh grade I told a friend I was republican and all he said was “is that what you think or what your parents think?” That shit punched me in the chest so damn hard. I literally spiraled for months reevaluating my entire world view. I’ll always be thankful for that kid.

The non-binary community is particularly intense with respecting pronouns and such because we don’t have ways of “medically transitioning” to anything outside of male or female by society standards. Sure I could go get a breast augmentation or facial feminization surgery but in reality that won’t help alleviate any nonbinary gender dysphoria for the whole community. There are nonbinary people completely comfortable with their bodies and such but simply want to be known as they, I also feel like as a nonbinary person there isn’t really a way to “pass” as such unless you have massive honkers, a mega bulge, beard and makeup on because that’s the only way you’ll confuse a typical person from society that you aren’t man or woman.

It feels especially evil that she's so privileged in her transition, and she tries to pull up the ladder behind her on other trans people. Also trying to excuse slavery and racial oppression is disgusting

Every time people misgender trans criminals I go absolutely insane. They always say it’s because they don’t respect them, but they’d never misgender a cisgender criminal. They just show that they see gender as something that’s just in your head, like you’re crazy or something.

Personally, as a trans man, I’m not sure if I can ever forgive her. She’s caused tremendous harm to our community. Not just recently, but for years. Conservatives are gonna use her as a talking point for years. We also just haven’t seen much yet to prove she’s actually sorry. We’ve gotten an apology, but that’s all right now.
