I love edgy humour. I’m disabled, gay, a woman, so I am often the butt of the joke, but when done properly, I fucking love it, it’s hilarious. However, you have to be aware of the controversy that surrounds those jokes and be tactful about the things you joke about, as well as not have any biases toward those groups. You can tell immediately if someone has a bias against that group by the way they make the joke.
@sethyoder7996

Yeah, dark humor is very funny and entertaining even if you're the butt of the joke. But only if its from someone who is skilled at writing and delivering good jokes, and also at least has a persona that syncs with their deliver to not make them sound just like a shit person. Unfortunately, Matt Rife doesn't really have the best writing (although decent) and has very basic delivery that cant go much beyond safe humor. He also comes across as just insensitive, and that's coming from me when I very often lean on the side of comedy/realism > feeling upset. Honestly, not even mad he's getting "cancelled". Because he doesn't seem like he deserves the comedic fame he has

I saw a viral standup bit on Instagram where the comedian was talking about gay pride and said "Why do they need a whole parade just because they suck dick? You ladies give birth but don't get a parade!" and allllll the comments were talking about how nobody can talk like this without getting cancelled anymore and blah blah blah and I'm just like omfg this joke has been told TIRELESSLY since the 80's, if not earlier. I'm coming to find a lot of people don't care about the "humor," they just want an excuse to talk shit about people they don't like

@@RazorRamonMachismo Hm... I don't know. The female comedians/cabaratiers in my country are beloved by men and women equally. And she certainly complains about men too in her shows. They just say; 'Haha, yeah, that sucks when men do that!' and continue watching the show. They're not offended by the truth. Brigitte Kaandorp is a good example. She did a sketch in the 90's, called Brigitte Kaandorp - Elsbeth Vliering (Chez Marcanti Plaza - 1995) She's supposed to play a Hippy-lady, loudly having discussions with her (colleague) manager on the stage, before ordering every unsuspecting audiencemember to sing along to her flabbergastingly weird medley, consisting of holidaysongs, oldfashioned ones, footballchants and nursery rhymes. The way she orders the crowd to join and they do, while being áll over the place (that is her act, exactly) is something she hasn't lost. She will make sure the audience listens and does what she says, no matter if she needs to lift her shirt to get their attention or spit into the crowd or whatever. She is still very popular, and not considered a controversial lady or someone that 'has harsh humor.' That'd be Sarah Kroos for example. Even though it's all in Dutch and it's just a tiny mini-sketch (because the show was not hers, she was allowed to be on for a bit) feel free to check it out for a bit.

Guys, you really need to start Iooking at context and reading between the lines before you damn someone as being against women: I (as a woman with some "bad experience") watched his special and from the context the joke was not targeted at the woman and that it's right to hit her if she doesn't cook. It was targeted at the hypothetical man who hit her because he probably thinks that way. The punchline of the joke was the assumption about the motives of the man who likely hit the woman and NOT that hitting a woman itself is funny because of her skills as a housewife. Is one thing not to understand the joke or to think that it wasn't good. It's another thing to doom a person for it and making wild assumptions about his persona and morals like most comments here do judgementally.

The thing is, I do think dark humour is a skill that can be pulled off effectively. Comedians make "edgy" jokes all the time, and can often "get away with it" because it's understood by their delivery, persona, or who they are as a person off stage that it's not meant to be mean spirited. If they miss the mark, they either apologise or are just more skillful in how they write in future. Matt Rife, based on what he has said in podcasts and to others, does not value women and is not a particularly nice person. Not only that, but he did not deliver the jokes in a clever or funny way. He's not really that funny, and is mean spirited in what he says. That's why it's offensive- it's lazy, and is designed to be purely for shock value. He deserves to be cancelled not necessarily for the jokes themselves, but for how he delivered them, the way he wrote them, and for being blatantly attempting (as he himself says) to put his female audience members off. It's a big "fuck you" that he isn't funny enough or noteworthy enough to actually accomplish without it backfiring. He has not realised he hasn't put in the effort or the groundwork to pull that off. And talking for an hour about how you find vaginas disgusting is just fucking weird. He's always been like that, people are just seeing it for the first time.

Yess. The person has to seem relatively trustworthy in their character, which can take some time to build up. Obviously it's not just what is said at all, mainly it's who's saying it. The best comedians intentionally paint an attractive (in whatever way) persona behind/through everything they do. Matt clearly has some issues around how visually attractive he is, and thinks he can get good with this hot jock persona, or maybe he feels limited to that, who knows. Unfortunate; I had hoped for him when I first came across him. I do wonder what his next few years will be like though
