I agree! I have two ig accounts. one for where I follow, post arts and stuff, and one where I dont follow anyone. I do understand that what you follow is what is suggested to you in the explore page, but in the account where I don't follow anyone, it's full of selfies and beautiful faces, some maybe filtered. I have nothing against it, people can post their faces if they want to. It's just it made me feel bad a little bit about myself, and maybe insecure, so I avoid tapping it and just keep posting my arts, because, it's also an art account, and it's what I love doing. I just thought that the explore page was showing me what's popular, and I just wish that things that are encouraging, or encourages some growth in life are popular as well and is recommended. Bringing them up in passing isn't really holding them accountable compared to people dedicating entire videos to holding women who "lie" accountable. It wasn't just towards you specifically, but everyone talking about this subject. Calling out the edited/fake bodies, helps us feel better in our own bodies, judge ourselves less harshly, and accept ourselves more. Its a lot easier, and much more beneficial to change the way we perceive ourselves than it is to try to change how others percieve us. While I too wish there were less men praising unrealistic bodies and lusting over photoshop, I also understand that it is not my responsibility to change how other's view me. Even if we did call out men that leeched over fake women, its not going to change anything, they're still going to be attracted to what the media pushes as attractive. We can't punish someone for liking the fake beauty standard that we also adhere to - if someone photoshops their body to look hotter, people will find them more attractive. Holding people accountable for finding that attractive isnt going to change much, but lessening the amount of fake content will then in turn lessen the amount of people lusting over fake bodies. Compare this to buying a misleading product. You can either blame the people who buy the misleading product, or you can blame the person who created the product and mislead people about it in the first place. If men only want to buy the misleading product, then thats what they'll do, but if the misleading product wasnt avaliable, they'd probably "settle" for the real thing. Obviously women aren't products, but what I'm saying is that we need to target higher up on the chain for a chain reaction to happen. Basically blame the ones who spread misinformation, not the ones that fall for it.

It only becomes a problem when you start to endorse and force that standard onto other people. Nobody should have to do unnecessary things for other peoples approval. If you don’t want to see other people edit photos, criticizing and commenting on their flaws in which they (might want) to change isn’t helping the situation. The issue is deeper than “I just want to edit my photos to look unnaturally pretty!!” If you’ve ever looked at the comment section under the videos you show people are just ripping the creators apart.

Figure drawing and observational studies helped me so much with my inner voice. It made me realise that nobody was truly "perfect" but that was exactly what made people beautiful.

Idk if this helps any but hip dips are very common! I'm also a bit insecure about it, but I find some sort of comfort knowing that marilyn monroe had them too.

I'm 15 and like a year ago I had a huuge problem with my hip dips and when I first saw stretchmarks on my body (They can literally just appear randomly) I had a literal breakdown. What i did was unfollow all of the cosplayers I followed before and bro- do I feel better now. What also helps is experiment with clothing styles. Once you find your style your confidence will go up like crazy I swear.

As a 20-something girl, I have to tell you, hip dips are perfectly normal, you can't change your skeleton and muscles in some places, nor you have to change them. Hip dips are beautiful! Also stretch marks look like Tiger Stripes :P I got mine from growing up fast as a teen and I love them now. Hope you'll learn to love yours too!

Im almost 18 so im not exactly an old and wise mentor but a piece of wisdom i can share is that puberty changes your body completely so body positivity is a really important thing now especially. Ikr, I'm Indian and when I saw that, i was horrified. The colorist views rooted in Indian society are so damaging to a lot of people. I have heard parents or older relatives saying things like "oh your skin is so dark, you'll have a problem finding a marriage partner", and even though they mean it as a joke most of the times, it is so dehumanising to hear that. My skin tone is more on the lighter side, to the point where a lot of people assume I'm biracial (even tho I'm not). Even at a very young age, I was aware of the advantage i had over my more dark skinned peers, due to the complements I'd hear. People always have praised me for my eurocentric features, and when i was young i liked the praise and attention. i got extremely obsessed with maintaining this light skin, I'd never go out in the sun, wear loads of sun screen because i was scared of getting a tan. Now whenever someone complements me i assume it's just because of my skin and not because I'm actually attractive.

And i think that there is a problem with that thinking, even if now in 2022 there are discriminations for people of colors obviously, we should focus of the roots of the problems? The problems is in peoples mind and vews to see others and society. It's the people who are flawed like that not the society and the world in its origins. This is why I wish it was more accepted to wear less revealing clothes, and if you want to fit the standard, use shapewear and padding. Like in the past, the dramatic curves of Edwardian times were from corsets, pillows, and bustles. Even now you can buy corsets and butt padding, so I don't get it. Like, you can wear a push up bra with tons of padding, why not normalize other garments for changing shape? Or the better idea, just make fashion trends something that doesn't rely on what body shape you have. I don't fit fast fashion due to my body, and I've been working on sewing some more timeless designs that fit and are comfortable, but won't get me too many weird looks for being out of style.

Thank you! I've been on Tumblr since 2012 and I never came across any of the things she talks about in the video. All because I always followed fandom stuff and my dash was always filled with that. I feel like Salem is forgetting that Tumblr didn't have an algorithm like Tiktok or Instagram does. If you want to interact with certain content, you gotta look it up yourself.

I am similar to them in a way that I hate my body WAY TOO MUCH, but instead of photoshopping , I just avoid looking in mirrors or taking any pictures if I can help it. Both are equally horrible. I've lost friendships because I refused to take pictures with them...

I have a friend like that. Shes VERY beautiful and all the guys are dying to talk to her yet she always photoshopp her face and her body one of my other friends before told her that shes very beautiful and she doesnt need it but she kept going anyways.

I feel guilty after watching the video. I don't have tik tok or Instagram, but I often edit my face and body every time I post a photo where Im in it or for a profile picture. I don't tell that to people, because they'll probably just think Im desperate. Until now, I still edit my photos.

Shaming yourselves for something so largely out of your control is unfair and I'm sure you'd never ever shame someone else for their body dysmorphia because you're most likely both wonderful, beautiful people who deserve acceptance, patience, and understanding! @@Lunalla yes, i meant to express that when popularised by western media, it's publicised to incite the reader or viewer to CHANGE themselves.. with commending language ("GET YOUR SUMMER BODY ON" for example) It's not that the beauty standards are wrong themselves. When You come to understand how these communities used physical appearance as a marker of an experience which they as a collective have come to appreciated and it slowly becoming culture, you appreciate the beauty of these people. I.e. East Asian people who appreciate lighter skin as a sign of wealth for not having to work in the sun all day. Or some West African cultures that appreciate plump women as a sign of security, having resources in their community to not starve.. Western media just oohs and aaahs and says "aesthetics".

Some cultures had milder beauty standards, like regarding clothes, hair, make-up, jewelery; some had some cringey but mostly unhamful beauty standards la japaneese blackened teeth or european extremly pointy shoes in the middle ages; some definetly harmful but pretty survivable, like corsets, hijabs, pumping your muscle non stop at the gym, tribal estetic like lips with wood through them, ear modiffing or neck rings that push down the bones below your neck; and some down right horrifing or mutilating like feet biding, filling teeth to the point they look like crocodile teeth and have permanent nerve damage, etc. And the most damaging ones are not from the west. And with the evolution of one culture, the "beauty and fashion standards" are becoming less and less harmfull, at least to the individuals of that culture. I'd rather be judged that i have to thick/thin eyebrows, am chubby and my clothes are dowdy than having to tatoo half of my body against my will when i reach puberty or some other weird visible identifier in a different culture. Wich probably i wouldn't even have the choice to refuse.

It was absolutely disgusting as she would tell these people that they were "just insecure" and that "your insecurities are not my problem", which is TRUE but there was no reason for her to sweep it under the rug. And only when her "scandal" (which could have been avoided as a scandal in the first place if she was just honest) finally had been brought to light by people zooming in and getting better looks at the unnatural swerving of her body, suddenly she's "never claimed she didn't edit her body" and "it was for the aesthetic"... i appreciate you for being honest with your followers ♡ but i really do think a lot of people just don't open up about that because they'd like for others to think that they look *that* good naturally. there's also still a lot of stigma surrounding plastic surgery and editing, so people would rather lie than admit they've gotten work done or that they edit their pictures/use filters (like,, consider the kardashians and ariana for this)

To say otherwise is to remove their own history and agency as individuals.

It’s also genuinely horrifying to see how algorithms support proana content. Back when I used tumblr a mutual of mine accidentally reblogged one thinspo post to their main and I interacted with it. After that, I kept getting recommended thinspo and it sent me into a deep rabbit hole. Luckily, I was able to drag myself out as I realized what exactly proana, thinspo, etc. really meant but it really is dangerous especially for young people using these platforms

Same, I honestly feel for content creators and people who have to use social media for their work, (sometimes that means realtors, interior designers, makeup artists, etc.), who rely on it for their livelihood bc they don’t really have the option. That’s the case for South Asians who naturally have darker skin than East Asians. East Asians are naturally fair skinned and actually don’t get very tan.

As a southeast asian ( i'm indonesian ), i can confirm this. There's even a lot of whitening products going around in my country and people who had a darker skin rarely considered as attractive 🙃

@@MickeyAndMore It's the same case with East Asians as well. I'm Chinese and whenever I visit my family in China I'm always reminded on how being pale is pretty. Also if you just look at Kpop, being pale is definitely super ingrained in Korean beauty standards as well.

So although we're considered "the standard" for Southeast Asians, East Asians have their own standards which is to be paler relative to the average East Asian. I also think one of the reasons why people think East Asians look pale is because of the white filter they put on TV programs, dramas and performances. You can notice this especially when you look at Kpop idols on Korea television vs on American television (ex. BTS)

I remember that flower crown filter that was so popular it literally made me look white and there was a reason why it was so popular

I remember so many years ago when I realised that I looked slightly thinner and lighter because of those SC filters! I was honestly so shocked because it was SUCH a subtle difference but it was enough to make you look a bit thinner. Once I saw that, I stopped using face filters. I only use colour filters if I ever feel like it lol. Amazing how these subtle things can subconsciously affect you so much.
