When I first looked at the new building before I bought, the one thing dad and I both mentioned off the bat was how hard removing the old linoleum tile would be that had be down since the building was first built. BUT that was one of the things that I was looking most forward to. A few days before Christmas, we went and looked at how much effort it would take to scrape a few tiles up so we would know, which turned into spending the next 3-4 days scraping, sweeping, and heating up tiles. Thankfully, the back part of the shop didn't have the tiles but there was about 6,000 sq ft. that did. A lot of effort later and we got it all scraped up and that shop is starting to look more and more like a blank canvas and that part is exciting! This is one of those "oddly satisfying" videos and I think you guys will see why - AND not actually have to do the work to get the satisfaction - win win! lol Now, I need to start looking at what I want to do the floors when the time comes - but there will be a lot of work done between now and then 😬

Be careful on the products you select for an epoxy floor. I am an architect and have done a number of auto dealer service shops. Very difficult to keep it from peeling up due to the tire traffic. I would recommend looking at polished concrete with stain and sealant. I believe you can get the color combinations you want that way too

After removal of the tiles. A simple muratic acid etch on the concrete will give the epoxy nice clean abraded surface to bond to.

You are correct on the asbestos assessment, I did a lot of remediation work, as the environmental engineer for a large corporation. Glad you checked and glad it worked out. Just signed up for power tour hope to see you all there but if not go fast and have fun. Long term the best floor is to polish the concrete and you can stain and seal it. Epoxy is ok but you need a good vapor barrier, urethane is great but cuts, I don’t think you would be happy with a laminate because it will chip.

100% correct the tile being removed is Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT). MOST asbestos tiles are fibered tile and 9"x9" tiles with a black mastic adhesive. These are all appearing to be 12"x12" tiles. Which are all post 1978 tiles.

Our whole post office had to have the tile removed. It wasn't the tile, but the adhesive that had asbestos. Once the tile got old enough to start breaking and chipping, they had to remove everything. Ya, that was fun.

Alex I want you to know you have been a Huge Inspiration for my Daughter she use to get intimidated on working on Cars in my shop and after watching you she rolls her sleeves up and gets into it and says if Alex Taylor can do it so can I. Definitely Epoxy but if you don't know how to do it or done it before you will mess it up. You need special shoes with metal spikes to walk on a Epoxy floor as you do it. They have some really cool Epoxy floors to choose from. Also you want commercial rated epoxy and put a non slip Sand coating which is very important because you do not want to be sliding around LOL Also you should see if Benpak will sponsor you for lifts. You should see what Lifts your going to use first because you might need to cut out the concrete and make it thicker where the lifts go. I had to do that with my Shop!!

Congratulations...how exciting is a clean slate like that! So much potential and room for activities. With a shop that size, I would really look hard into installing a sprinkler system, especially while it's much cheaper, easier, and less disruptive now, versus later. It's by no means a cheap or sexy endeavor, but it can make all the difference in how much you lose when something goes wrong...the potential is certainly there with the hot work, vehicles, fuel, exposed insulation, etc... Plus, your insurance may become cheaper. That's the fire protection engineer in me talking about the boring stuff, lol!

One shop I owned had the epoxy floor. It was, for the most part, really nice. Very resilient and looked pretty much the same 10 years later. What I hated was the color. It was a light gray color. Looked nice when it was washed. It got dirty so damn fast. 3 or 4 days after scrubbing it was filthy. The other issue I had there was no grit in the epoxy. Melting snow in the winter made that floor super slick. It was just done a couple of years before I moved in, so I really didn't want to spend money on the floor. But yeah, that floor is so worth the money.

I have been in the concrete business for most of my life...PLEASE do vapor emission testing before doing ANY epoxy or anything else that adheres to the concrete! (It is cheap and will tell you if the epoxy/whatever will actually adhere to the concrete, and possibly save you a ton of money!) Honestly though, I would suggest to grind and polish the existing concrete. (good looking finish, easy to clean and LOW maintenance) You could probably do all or most of it by yourselves because y'all seem more than capable and willing to put in the work! (I think I may have a handful of the vapor emission testing kits in my shop...they are easy to use (I could send instructions), if you'd like them, let me know and I would be happy to send them to y'all if I do have them.) Best of luck to you guys and congrats on the new place!!!

Congratulations to Alex on getting a shop all your own. The Taylors are not afraid of hard work. That much is obvious. From your Dad and his world-famous Hot Rods to you and your quest to be the fastest female drag racer of the modern drive and drag genre. And, Alex, you are a wonderful example to other young ladies who want to be successful business owners and drag racers. Your willingness to not only dream big but to get in there and get your hands dirty makes you my personal Rock Star! There was only one other female fabricator and racer that I enjoyed following. She was also instrumental in bringing females into the fabrication side of things. I followed her career and I was saddened when she was killed doing what she loved....going fast, really fast. Alex, you remind me so much of Jessi Combs. Your willingness to get your hands dirty welding, designing, and fabricating. Yes, to me, You Are A ROCK STAR!! Oh, and I think Groot was taught not to go outside and he apparently learned it well....lol..... He's a cool dog. 😎 As far as doing your floor...there's a dude here on KZfaq that has a channel called "Concrete Floor Solutions" and he ONLY does concrete floors. He also sells everything you need to do any finish on concrete and offers step-by-step guidance on how to do it yourself. Maybe you should check his channel out.

Alex, I remodel grocery stores for a living in CA. For the showroom find a commercial flooring company. There is commercial flooring that looks like wood flooring in a variety of colors. For the shop if you no longer want to see the outline of the old VCT you could diamond grind, polish and seal the floor. If the shop floor isn’t a big deal because of welding, chemicals and spills just sand and seal.

Alex, congrats on the new shop! I really enjoy your channel and the stuff you do on HRG with Lucky. He's a good dude, and you are the real deal. Your attitude and work ethic reminds me of my friend Jessi Combs, who we lost way too soon. I have a 3000 sq ft shop that I had professionally epoxied (ground the concrete, filled the seams, then color and clear coated) about 10 years ago. I like it, but if I was going to do it again, I'd go with polished/stained/sealed concrete in the work areas. With epoxy, you have to be really careful about welding spatter. It will leave burn marks on the epoxy. Grinding dust will take the gloss off the finish quickly. Epoxy might be the answer for the more lightly used showroom areas, as it can add color, your logo, and be kept high gloss and pretty. I'll offer you a couple more bits of advice I learned the hard way, but your Dad probably already knows these things: - Spend some time planning the layout of the shop, and keep future your plans in mind. Will you need a paint booth? Machine shop area? Indoor wash bay? Sanding/grinding/sandblast area? Planning the plumbing and electrical for things you might add down the road will be easier and cheaper now. - Figure out where you'll need 220V outlets, and add a few extra. One outdoors is always handy too, for welding up something quick. - Plan on adding 3 phase electrical if you don't already have it. American Rotary makes great phase converters. - Put in about twice as many regular electrical outlets as you think you'll need. In my shop (half the size of yours) I have 40 110V outlets, and I still need power strips in some places. - Plumb the shop for air, have a fitting at least every 10 feet down all the walls, and 3 or 4 drops on hose retractors near your lifts. Plumb at least one air fitting into the front showroom too. - Do not paint the ceiling black. It might look cool, but it sucks all the light out of the room. Go with a white ceiling, and light colored walls, to maximize the lighting in the shop. - Have at least two "shop sinks" with hot and cold water. Two, because one can be used for really dirty work, and the other for normal mechanics washing up. - If you can, build a "carport" roof on the side of the shop and fit it with a lift and pressure washer so you have a perfect place to get a car up in the air and really get it clean. (think about all the crap that came out of the Savoy) - And lastly, it's expensive, but heat and air condition the entire shop. It not only makes your shop a pleasant place to work, but it also will control humidity, and minimize corrosion on any bare metal. If you are ever in need of anything in the Phoenix area, you're welcome to my shop, lift, and tools anytime. Garry S.

Always depends on budget, but personally, I'd just resurface and seal the existing floor. Sealer can be clear to any color. Color matching different batches can be difficult if it isn't premixed. Biggest thing is, of course, the prep work. Unless you want it to lift, the bond has to be excellent. So, no oils, silicones, etc. Concrete is porous so if there were any spots of those after resurfacing, they'd need to be cleaned or neutralized. Good luck. Better you than me. Been there done that.

Even if you want to put tiles or carpets later, grind, clean and epoxy it as soon as you can - an epoxy coat controls the dust that comes out of the slab, which comes up through carpets and other flooring. Grind it back to where you can see the stone mix, and the epoxy will bring out the colours in the stones used.

My 2 cents. If you want prettier AND tougher floors that are low maintenance, I think polished concrete with a sealant for moisture is the best option. Much tougher than any coatings like Epoxy. Walmart is using polished concrete now, and those floors while occasionally ghosted from previous tiles are acceptable in appearance and much better looking, in an industrial sort of way. The only real drawback to concrete is, if you fall, it's gonna hurt. If you drop something breakable on it, it's gonna break.

What can be more fun than playing with fire and shooting the bull with friends? When you think about paving the outside areas, Roller-compacted Concrete (RCC) can be laid and driven on in 24 hours.

Surely there is some kinda of sponsorship deal here . There must be a company willing to do a deal on the epoxy floors for signage on your trailers & shirts etc with a quick mention on each episode .

I would do painted steel on the walls over sheet rock. Saves tons of work plus is way more durable.

I work for a dealer and our floors were epoxy coated. It failed after 6-7 years. They just ground down the concrete and polished it. It looks so much better.

The front showroom floor would look awesome done in the same tile but in black and white to represent a Winners Flag or Circle, as long as it's waxed with a high gloss finish so as to show professionalism, Ah! Looks good. You are a lucky young lady to have such an incredible family and circle of friends, always keep those values, and you'll do just fine in life. Meeting up with Merlyns Old School garage was a great episode. That would be a great formate, to travel around North America and help each unique garage on their project builds for a weekend in the off season. You and your father (Team) have a lot to offer smaller, race, speed, custom shops. Would be Grand Wrenching by all. Luv from m Barrie Ontario Canada

An SDS drill with a flathead bit works great as well! I got the Makita 18V one and it helped a ton when I remodeled my bathroom.

Hi all. Doing well, I have seen big roll lay outs, like carpet rolls, when I was younger, yet I have no idea of what it was. Happy newbyear year. Thanks Karl

I did concrete grinding, polishing and epoxy floors for a few years. I would recommend getting it done professionally as they have all the right equipment and knowledge. There are little things that if not done correctly will have a big impact on the final finish and durability. The epoxy will seal the slab so that it doesn’t absorb oils or other contaminants. A polished concrete floor, even with a sealer applied will still absorb liquids that are not cleaned up very quickly and can then be stained as a result. Even water can stain them if left there too long.

I would use Terrazzo flooring, looks of epoxy, many color choices, oil and slip resistant… really durable too up to 4,200 psi per square inch.
