Using a non protected finisher makes it special in a way that the wrestler gives it its power, like Jericho’s back elbow or even the various DDTs

Yeah like an armbar. Someone does it normally it doesn't win but then someone comes along with bjj experience and they're the master of the arm bar, then it works every time.

Just a thought from a wrestling fan, perhaps a lack of universalism could be a benefit to a finisher for expanding storytelling. For instance: A wrestler is in a match with an opponent two heavy to powerbomb. Realising this, the wrestler is forced to adapt and change his strategy, going for unconventional means of defeating his opponent. A challenge that could engage the audience that asks: "How will he win without his finisher?"

Currently I’m using a spinning knee strike called the “KILLSHOT” as my finisher. I came up with it awhile ago and really like it because it hasn’t been used much and it looks pretty good when I use it. However, the people I train with think I should use that instead as a setup for a shining wizard (finisher), but so many people have done a shining wizard, and if sold right, the spinning knee strike could be a simple yet well received finishing move. What do you think Quack?
@TilWeMakeIt
@TilWeMakeIt 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jared - I think a way to look at this would be: which move looks better when you do it? Is the KILLSHOT more consistent and spectacular, or is the Shining Wizard? The reason I think of it that way is this - if you order them incorrectly, and the set-up move ends up getting the BIGGER reaction, then the finish will naturally be a step down from that, and feel anticlimactic. You want to climb up so the finish is a climax, not step down. If you follow what I mean by that.

In a way I feel the "protected" element ends up negating most of not all of the others. Namely risk factor, complexity, and even adaptability. And this happens because the finisher "has" to be something nobody else would do. I remember seeing a shoot the other day HBK was the butt of, talking about how back in his heyday virtually nobody in the WWE was doing siperkicks and nowadays you've got everybody and their mother throwing out superkicks practically after the first tie up. This kind of thing forces a wrestler to come up with a move so bizarre, so convoluted, and at times so contextually-dependent all to avoid doing something anybody else might pull out as a filler spot. Leg drops, DDTs, hurricanrannas, even long delay vertical suplexes have become so commonplace it's virtually ompossible to put them over as finishers anymore.

I've always had an interesting idea how my character when I get into wrestling would would have a completely different moveset depending on whether I'm calm or angry. If I'm calm I would do a lot of limb grapples and wear down moves, and when angry be doing wild powerful strike combos and slams. Calm finisher would be some flashy arm or leg submission (still undecided). and my angry finisher would be a gut punch to make them buckle over and an axe kick to the ground as the follow up, and then several stomps to the back. I would be yelling through all the stomps, and the pin. Is this a good idea, or too complex?

@@dudesouls if the character is a jeckle / Hyde type, what triggers the transition is extremely important. Facial expressions and body movement will be paramount in order to sell the character. Some mime/body movement instruction would be something to consider. How does the calm side walk/run compared to the angry side. Posture, resting body movements, little tics, how the body/ muscles are presented. How quickly can you transform everything together. Even control over your facial muscles and especially the eyes movement and dilation come into play when doing this sort of acting. What other activities cam you draw on to pull experience on building the character.

If I was to ever try and be a pro wrestler, there are three moves that I can think of off the top of my head that I would love to make my Finishing move. The first one was move previously used by Kevin Steen (better known as Kevin Owens) which as then being called the Steenilzer, it's essentially a bridging package powerbomb or piledriver, whichever you prefer to. The second one which I've never seen anyone do before is a twisting Death Valley driver. In the sense that as your doing the move itself you're doing a full 360 degree spin. Another variation on this that would be awesome would be to keep spinning, essentially turing a twisting death valley driver in to a twisting death valley cutter. The third and final one that I would love to do is probably one the most simple moves out there, that being Randy Orton's punt kick. What do you think of these choices?

If you are thinking of a finisher you have to think to yourself am I able to do it on people from all types of weight classes, like having something as a super kick is great because you can do it on someone who severely outweighs you and it's easy to set up, think of someone like Finn Balor who is 200 pounds do you think he could do a power bomb to someone like the big show? No thats why he has a diving attack that doesn't have too much set up and can do it to anyone regardless of weight, submissions are excellent because when we think of submissions we think of Ric Flairs figure four leg lock or Brett Harts Sharpshooter where they can do it on opponents of all different sizes, something as a strike or kick or diving attack or submissions are definitely great to be able to do it on all types of opponents and being able to have a strike or kick you can hit it out of no where, I really appreciate submissions as finishers because they are my ideal finishing maneuvers along with strikes or kicks because it's easier to set up and your able to do it to anyone and being able to do it out of no where to hear the crowd pop is a delight

Something like a running knee strick isn't necessarily jaw dropping but effective enough to do to anyone regardless of the weight or size

So, the original one, the "classic" so to speak, I looked at the Razor's Edge that Razor Ramon was doing, and thought "how can I take this basic concept and do it in an entirely new way?" And then I just experimented with 3 variations to figure out what looked best, and had the lowest margin of error. A different example would be Quackendriver 3. There, I took two shapes I really liked - the Michinoku Driver and the Fishermanbuster - and I experimented with combining the mechanics into one move, until I had something that was fresh. Hey Mike, so I have a question about a conversation I had not too long ago applying to finishers. So I've been trying to perfect a move that I've seen Marty Scurll do called "Black Plague." It's kind of a double underhook twist bomb thing. It's kind of hard to explain. Anyway, there's this other individual who is doing a double underhook DDT as their finish. I asked since we both have the same setup for our moves with both starting in the same underhook position, if I can continue to use the move. She agreed I could. But I was wondering, does that affect anything in terms of what the audience is expecting if that makes any sense? If not, I'll try my best to reword it. Thanks so much.
@TilWeMakeIt
@TilWeMakeIt 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. It starts like a DDT but turns over into a back bump at the end. So at the start, the Plague is going to look the same as the Double Underhook DDT to the audience, only the ending appears to be different. One is a head and neck move essentially, while the other is a back move. So: is there anything _wrong_ with either move? No, of course not. But if you are on the same cards, and you both have finishers that start from the same set-up, what will probably happen is the audience will confuse them to a degree, and perhaps decide that they *really* like one of the moves, and then the other becomes lame duck. If you are committed to going forward into this scenario, I do have a recommendation for you. Design a ritual that precedes the butterflying of the arms. Meaning: before you even apply the double underhook, you have a character ritual that is so clear and distinct, it helps dispel some of that confusion. If you read my book “7 Keys to Becoming a Better Performer - A Book for Fellow Pro-Wrestlers" this is Chapter 5. Hope that helps!

so lets say if I want to use another wrestlers finisher like the Attitude Adjustment do I need to ask for permission or would I be allowed to use it or do I need to ask for permission to use it?

If it's possible, ask. But I get the feeling John Cena is unlikely to respond ;)

i have 2 in mind. a diving senton, similar to like shotzi or akira tozawa for example another move i have in mind is literally impossible (probably) on anyone who isn't a cruiserweight, but its the orange crush. i'd want a mix of el generico's speed and kenta kobashi's technique to it. kenta doing it here (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fKuFhrlq3NrdmJ8.html) is quite slow. el generico on the other hand here (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtiIlrOk3L2Uqas.html) does it fast, but has a weird start. i kinda want to be able to use it unexpectedly, cuz i think having a finisher that doesn't have a lot of set up (rko, stunner, attitude adjustment, etc.) is what makes a finisher great

Hey Mike, I Don't currently recall if you touched base on this in the video but what would you do in a situation where you've come up with a move or a new variation of something and someone asks you if they can use it? Just an hour or so ago I had someone on TikTok ask if they could steal my finisher that I've been using for 11 years called Sleeping Beauty and I mixed on how I feel about it.

That's a really tough spot. Chances are, you could say No! and they'll just do it anyway. People take moves from others every single day - I've done it, too! Half my offense was lifted from Jushin Liger when I started out! I think the best thing to do is accept this for the compliment that it represents, and agree gracefully.

Hey Mike I have to ask a question I am 6'3 300 lbs but I'm really athletic for my size and I kinda wanna to a 450 as a finisher I've pulled it off plenty of times but from some of the critics I've heard it's not right for a big man like me to do it any thoughts if need be I can result to the other finisher I use also I can see why cause my stature is more of an Otis but 6'3

I would say you save it as a big match finisher. 450 Splash at 6'3 at 300 pounds is very impressive but it could take a big toll on your body. Do as Mike says, consider the risk factor. Also check how many people do it in your wrestling fed. If you arent the only one doing it, it would cause issues

So, just a question. First of all I'm still relatively young and long way off to being a Wrestler but I've always wanted to so my question is am I able to use a finisher that someone had used in the past and had retired? We're mostly Talking Brock Lesnar's F5 since it always looked kinda cool and yeah he's relatively young and far off from retirement but by the time I make it to WWE I don't think he's gonna be there since as I said I'm a long way off, but that was my question.

There is no one, absolute answer to this, unfortunately. You may not have any choice over your finisher if you make it to the WWE main roster. For example, quite a few of my friends and peers had to demonstrate they could perform their intended finisher on the heaviest or biggest person on the roster - like Mark Henry, Big Show or Khali in the past - and show it could be done safely, over and over again. Failing that test, they were told to choose a different finisher, or had a new one assigned to them.

I feel like a finisher is a lot like a joke. If you need to explain it (I.e the audience can't just intuitively figure it out ) then it's bad.

Wrestling is crap because of things like the concept of finishing moves, absolutely no surprise whatsoever, you know when it's coming, you know the match always ends on a finishing move, it sucks.

I can't be a wrestler due to my back problems but I was wondering would these finishers or should they be Signatures? Noogies of Doom: Grabbed your opponent in a side headlock and give your opponent eight noogies. Then smash his/her face onto your knee.

I am just now becoming a professional wrestler. I am 37 spent time overseas and got hurt while there. And for 10 years i was depressed and hated myself after iraq, everyone i ever brought up the fact my dream was to become a wrestler laughed at me called me a joke and i allowed that to get to me. Now at 37 i have had enough i am persuing my dream i dont want to be famous i dont have any major goals. I just want to have a handful of matches and be able to be proud of myself and have something i can tell my son i was and actually be proud of what ive done. Being a disabled broken soldier isnt something i want my son to know me as. I may have started late BUT THIS BUSSINESS IS MY HEART MY SOUL I NEED THIS AM I BEING STUPID OR SHOULD I CHASE MY DREAMS
