This was heartbreaking. Two men that if only born 40 years later would have lives completely differently. They would have been able to live each other openly. They would be protected from AIDS. They could be their real selves. Tragic story.

A 30-year romance, and they had to fight the whole way. Hawk and Skippy. Hawk came running when he found out that he was sick. This was such a heartbreaking series. It's such a sad way they had to hide what they meant to each other, and in the end, Skippy died. I have never felt a range of emotions from a show. Jonathan and Matt were outstanding. Just watching this almost made me cry.

This series truly was incredible, the chemistry between Jonathan Bailey & Matt Bomer is unmatched. They both did an absolutely FANTASTIC job portraying Tim & Hawk's story. It was a complete emotional rollercoaster that made me laugh, cry, and fall in love with fictional characters (especially Tim). The finale had me sobbing, Tim deserved so much better in the end - but their love story was epic regardless, or should I say a great consuming love as Tim said. I just wish he could've gotten a happier ending, but that's not always reality. 🥺 This video is a great tribute to their relationship. Beautiful video. ❤ I feel like I need some emotional support group after watching this series. 😭 Truly one of the greatest shows I've watched in a while and massively important. Give Jonathan & Matt all the awards. 🥺

gays dont tend to get a happier ending, or its a superficial ending from a superficial story. ive not seen an unexpected happyt ending frok an emotionally told story of two men
@Mnxeu

That's definitely not true, there's loads of things out there where LGBTQ+ couples have gotten their deserved happy ending if you look for them and as much as I wish Tim got a better ending, considering the times they were in during the series - this ending is realistic because this is what happened to a lot of men too. They were just cast aside and left to die because being gay wasn't accepted back then. Despite Tim's diagnosis, he still could've had a happy life with anyone else but unfortunately couldn't fully let go of Hawk to allow himself to do that which is explained in the series, which sucks. 😭 He deserved an epic love story that lasted with someone who loved him wholeheartedly.@@AnthonyVincentD

Having lost almost all my friends to AIDs in the 80s and 90s, this breaks my heart. Now, so many movies and series show these perfect love stories without illness or horror, I'm afraid people won't remember what my generation went through. Why are the memorials in Washington honoring war veterans, black heroes and native Americans and we have no representation at all? I think it's cruel.
@adiaj9228

Sorry for your loss...However... what should be emphasized is that being gay is not mutually exclusive. Could you imagine being gay and black in the 50s!?!? It was a double threat... Discrimination, by the YT gay community to the 10th degree. There was no unity, until there was and progress started to happen. There is the National AIDS memorial. A symbol of the HIV/AIDS struggle, activism in the fight against stigma, and hate.

An amazing series. Looking back, the life of LGBTQ members in the 1950s was an ordeal, a testament to survival of the fittest. I watched this series for a couple of reasons. I was interested to see how the change of attitudes about gayness would be handled in the different decades. I did not know the book, so the content was unknown to me. What I found was a man having his life upturned by a good looking self involved narcissist. It took Skippy a long time to learn who he was and what and who Hawk was,. The scene set on Fire Island where Skippy figures it all out and says “ I have wasted my life on you “ made me think Yes ! He finally understood and now he can live his own life. Sadly, he quickly fell back under Hawk’s spell, and even though they didn’t see each other for years, that attraction remained. I felt sorry for Skippy, not because he died of AIDS, but because he fell in love with a narcissist. I also felt sorry for Hawk, because he either didn’t see or chose not to see how his choices affected his family. Hawk’s wife Lucy, did come to terms with things and decided that she wouldn’t be there when Hawk finally returned home. And congrats to her for doing so. And I hope that she finally found someone that would find her alluring and hot, all the things that Hawk didn’t see. This story was a true tragedy, not because of death by aids, or McCarthy’s gay witch-hunt, but love given and not returned.

I think you´ve missed a couple of things here. In the 50s it would simply have been dangerous for Hawk and Skippy to be together. Skippy, in his madly in love way, would have outed them. Probably by accident. Hawk needed to protect them. As for Lucy; She knew what she was getting into. Her own mother told her to accept his “extra-marital activities” as „just the meeting of needs“. Did you notice that Lucy not once said she loved Hawk? She mentioned that she loved the life they had build. She got exactly what she asked for, realizing late in life that it wasn´t enough. Since Hawk decided to start a family, at least he had the decency to stick to them. Provide for them etc. It might not have been enough and Hawk´s character might have been selfish and flawed but I think he did the best he could. So maybe your opinion is a bit too black and white?
@mikemcmahon8982
@mikemcmahon8982 4 ай бұрын
@@peteraschaffenburg1 Thank you for your feedback. I do understand that life adds lots of gray so that every relationship is unique. In the case of Skippy and Hawk, I think that Hawk never thought that it was possible for a man to love another man and perhaps he doesn’t know how to handle love when it is offered to him. But there were individuals that did figure it out. That lived the life they wanted to live, despite society’s expectations. Look at Marcus . I agree with your comment on Lucy’s behaviour , she may not have figured out who Hawk was at the time of her wedding, and,perhaps she had some idealized idea of who that war hero was that she was marrying, but time does open doors. When the realization came , she acted upon it and extricated herself from that marriage. She had the grace to recognize what she saw with Hawk and Skippy was something valid. I am not sure Hawk ever did see the validity of a relationship with Skippy, until Skippy was dead. As for Hawk deciding to start a family, it was society that made him choose to get married. I am not sure he wanted to get married as opposed to being forced to do so by society. I think he may have loved his children, but I don’t think he ever really understood his son or really tried to do so. But this doesn’t lessen the pain he felt at his son’s death. Ultimately when you distill their relationships to their essence, I still see a narcissist and someone who loves him. Perhaps the distillation may make those gray areas merge into the black and white ones. But the fact that you felt compelled to respond to my view of the series and your comment made me think about relationships in general , shows you how effective this series was.
@peteraschaffenburg1
@peteraschaffenburg1 4 ай бұрын
@@mikemcmahon8982 Thank you for taking the time to answer my comment! Effective might not be a word I´d use to describe the series. ;-) I´m struggling with it for a number of reasons. Number one being that no one in my surroundings understands English enough to watch it with me so I have no other outlet than Facebook and KZfaq to exchange my thoughts. I can only watch it in 15 minutes bits and then have to cry for an hour. So yes, I might be a little obsessed. ;-) I was a young adult when AIDS became an issue. I´ve seen the Anyta Bryants and the nasty homophobia even in one of the most liberal countries in the world - the Netherlands - back then. Have you seen the series Queer as Folk back in 2000? Hawk reminds me a bit of Brian Kinney. Everybody hated his guts, selfishness and stubborn refusal to tell Justin he loved him. But if there was a problem they all looked at him for a solution and in the end he tried to give everyone what they wanted. That´s Hawk one on one. Have you ever considered that loving someone is actually a selfish feeling? What most people actually mean when they say those famous three words is “I love to be loved by you”. Tim´s love for Hawk might have been altruistic but in reality that´s not how relationships work.
@stephaniel2850

I can't help but feel that this surface reading is such a disservice to both the nuanced writing and Matt Bomer's incredible performance. Sure, I guess if you really want you can see Hawk as this mustache twirling evil narcissist who only ever made the choice he made because he enjoyed toying with Tim, but like... why would you choose to read it like that when there was a much, MUCH better story being told if you allow for Hawk to be an actual person? A person who loved Tim every bit as deeply as Tim loved him, but who was also deeply traumatized and afraid that if he allowed himself to think that a safe and happy life with Tim could be possible, it would all come crashing down and, probably his deepest fear, that Tim would be the one to pay the worst price for it. If you actually read Hawk as human, it becomes very clear that the choices he makes are far more out of self destructive tendencies and a self fulfilling prophecy of him feeling like he's not good for the people he cares about than out of any narcissism, lack of conscience, or crazy ambition. And all the times he reaches back out to Tim, it's not because he's trying to destroy his life - it's for the exactly the same reason Tim keeps being drawn back to him too: because he's deeply in love with him! And in a lot of ways, Hawk needs Tim in his life a lot more than Tim needs him; Tim is a very open person who has no problem finding community and people to lean on, even if not romantic interests. Hawk, on the other hand, literally has no one else he feels safe enough to be vulnerable and his truest self with. And sure, it's not untrue that that's the case because of his own choices, but those choices were also *intensely* informed by what the world around him was telling him were the options. He literally outright says in episode 3 "the lying starts to get easier, because you realize you have no choice". Whether he was right or not about the options, the fact is that he did genuinely believe he had no other choice BUT to live the life he did, and it's understandable that he believed that given the world they lived in. So the tragedy of the story has nothing to do with Hawk "not loving Tim enough"; I just don't even get what more the show could have done to show (I emphasize "show" because yes, the whole point is that it was the saying it out loud that was the hardest part for him and took him a very long time) how much and how deeply he loved him. The tragedy is that they both (and Lucy) deserved so much better. Hawk deserved to not live in a world that told him his only option was to live a lie and settle for "happiness within reason" when his happiness beyond measure was right there. Tim deserved to live in a world that was caught up to him and where he could live and be loved as openly as he was ready to. Lucy deserved for Hawk to be able to be open with or, or at least to have more options for leaving sooner to pursue her own romantic fulfillment. *No one* won.

Another video that perfectly captures and shows their love story. Thank you for this ❤️💗 Watching this series, I cannot express how much I fell in love, had my heart moved, warmed and broken many, many times from the acting, actors, storylines, themes and ending 💔😢 Hawk and Tim had a love story that spanned decades through romance, guilt, shame, but above all a great consuming love story. Both were in love, or rather Tim was the one who was more in love with Hawk and professed it to him; Hawk was scared and too proud to say it back to him. And the irony is that after breaking his heart and pushing him away, Hawk was still there for Tim and needed him out of the guilt and shame that he had to love with (rightly so) for all the pain he subjected him to. But no matter what, Tim ‘Skippy’ Laughlin never got over or stopped loving Hawkins Fuller, despite everything. Same for Hawk even though he never admitted it. In the end, Tim still protected Hawk and proved he was always too good for him. He deserved so much more and better but Hawk was always the one for him. Just as he was the man who Hawk truly, always loved. *Beyond Measure*

I just saw the final episode of fellow travelers... I thought it was done very well but for me the irony was it ends with him being at the first presentation of the AIDS QUILT in DC in 1987... It was this huge march on Washington and the crowd was so pumped and we had just walked by the vacate White House... screaming shame because Ronald Reagan had left town... The march ended at the base of the Mall... And suddenly laid out in front of us was this massive quilt of pain and suffering. It was like careening into a brick wall at 90 mph... I will never forget it. After the movie I looked up Matt Bomer's age and realized he would never experience the true depth of this moment like we did... He was only a 10-year-old boy at the time. Then I noticed something even more startling.I knew the March occurred on Veterans Day weekend. Matt Bowmers birthday was October 11, 1977... exactly 10 years to the date. October 11, 1987 The Inaugural Display On October 11, 1987, the Quilt was displayed for the first time on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., during the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Jonathan Bailey was born the year after Quilt display...1988. Having to gay actors in this movie shows how far HOLLYWOOD has come in 30 years since PHILADELPHIA 1993 (Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington

This is such a heartbreaking thing to watch, yet the love was so real. Jonathan Bailey should have for best actor. The music with these cuts literally had me in tears.

My heart is just as pure and noble like Skippy. I fell in love with Richard back in October 2016. We were 23 at the time, ever since he became the love of my life. My love for him is as pure as Tim felt for Hawk. Hopefully someday Richard the love of my life confesses me that he’s truly loved me too 💔

This show is mesmerizing and emotionally overwhelming. I cannot stop thinking about it and actually well up when I do so. There were several flaws in the last two episodes when it verged on the frenetic and the implausible, especially in the editing, but overall it was nothing less than masterful and haunting. I do not believe that Hawk was really selfish, but flawed and rather incapable of self-assessment, perhaps because he had always succeeded in just about everything he endeavored. That was arrogance borne out of excessive confidence, but his humanity was manifest in his caring for Tim especially near the end, and in his heartbreaking admission that Tim was the man he loved.
