Yep that's the meaning of the song. He loves Tim, whether Tim is a boy or not, he just wishes Tim were a girl so it would be "okay" to love him. It's a social grey-area too where Tim is his closest friend, so he might feel like if he is with Tim he's lost a friend. I remember being like him when I was younger, praying I would wake up a girl, so maybe my best friend would love me, because he said "I would marry you If you were a girl' when we were younger. Not because gay is wrong, but because that's what we were taught as kids.

But you know, that was 5 years ago, soon to be 6. Almost a decade has passed. I grew up. A part of me stayed there, forever. Wishing that we could be together. But I had to leave him behind, because he was very immature and we would've hurt each other. Things are as they are. I left that tragedy-loving part of me, too. I'm 21 and I've never done anything remotely romantic with any guy, I've never found ***The One***. But I'd like to think that once I find the right guy, we'll be maturely happy. Kissing and you know, sorting it all out. I always wanted to have a romantic story. I always wanted it to feel magical. Truly special. Not lame, not common. One of those stories about the endurance of love and loyalty.

I have very different feelings about this being a transgender man, and my best friend is also trans but she's a trans girl. So yeah i do really wish my Tim was born a girl since she would be happier that way. The thing the song reminds me the most of though in its opening lines is childhood memories of mine... Back when i was a little girl and wanted nothing more than to be someones boyfriend or husband.
