The way I interpreted the first verse is a little girl probably that lives in the neighborhood saw a boy she knew and his dad packing fishing gear into the truck getting ready to go and she went and grabbed her pole and wanted to join, but the boy who is obviously still in that stage of being a kid didn't want to bring a girl to his father son fishing trip. But the father being a good dude and wanting to teach his boy a good life lesson brought her along.

I can't relate to that part. I never went through any "I hate girls" phase. I always liked girls and would have been begging my Dad to *just* take the girl. No boys, don't want her eyes fixed on anyone but me. 🙂

I took it that the first verse was that it was a neighbor girl that wanted to go fishing and he was a boy that thought girls were icky at that time in his life. His dad even said “ someday you’ll change your mind “.

No Brad, the girl at the beginning wasn't some random girl, it was a neighborhood girl that everyone knew. Johnny didn't want her to go with them fishing because, it's a guy thing, and boys and girls are natural enemies at that age.

I don't almost wish .. I do wish 😉 1980s or 90s is perfectly fine with me. I used to think people were a little uptight back then, but seeing how far we have fallen as a society... I prefer being a little uptight to this straight up bat$hit crazy were living in.
@jordanledoux197

Well, it wasn't a better place for everyone. Early 90s was also Rodney King, LA riots, AIDs devastating the gay community, not to mention the horrific treatment gay people endured in general in the early 90s. In general, I think the world and the US has continued to get better as time has gone on. It's not always smooth, things go wrong, but overall, things get better. We just think about the things in the present that we want to change and fix. China's human rights abuses now are appalling for instance, and there's a lot of reasons to say it's not a great place. But at the same time, the early 90s in China had many of the same problems along with absolutely devastating poverty and Tiananmen square had only been a few years prior. Things get better, even if they aren't perfect/great right now.

Tears me up!!!

In rural America this story is not so unbelievable. I have a couple friends that married girls they little have known their entire life and I remember as kid doing stuff with neighbors all the time. And their kids went to do stuff with us all the time. Especially the drive-in(a huge outdoor theater), swimming, fishing, boating, etc. Since growing up and moving to the city I've noticed this is not a common practice in cities. In rural America it's very common. I literally knew every person living around me as a kid. Now that I live in the city. I know the old lady living in the house next to us(her husband died and I feel a certain obligation to look out for her), but I don't know any of our other neighbors.....and I don't want to. I like to mind my own business and hope they mind theirs. There's some strange people living in the city. The contrast between rural living and city living is night and day.

The first verse has likely been explained well enough, but yes, there is a little girl who saw Johnny and his dad getting ready to go fishing. She probably hoped by grabbing her pole and heading over, that she would be allowed to go with. Dad says we gotta take her, but Johnny...being a little boy...doesn't want the girl to go. That all changed later, obviously, when Johnny fell in love with the same little girl...who likes going fishing. ♥

Apparently, my aunt use to babysit both myself and my current wife. when we were really young. Neither of us remember it, but my aunt says I use to chase her around the house and pull on her pigtails. After going to two different elementary schools, we met years later in high school. Fast forward to the present and we have been married 35 years.

Man this song always gets me teared up. My dad used to always listen to country and I remember hearing it the very first time in his car and was just so drawn in by the story, being closer to the age of the boy in the first verse and then seeing where it ended up by the last verse I was just amazed. Had kind of forgot about this song and now I'm sitting at work and trying not to tear up a little. The song itself, the memories I have of it, thinking of it now that I'm the man in the third verse instead of the boy in the first verse. Crazy to think about. My wife and I didn't meet like that, but we dated the first time in 7th grade, then got back together in 10th grade and have basically been together since then. And I'm in the midwest, with alot of family from Tennessee, so I definitely relate to alot of this, the fishing, etc.

I interpreted the first part of the song a little differently when I was younger. I thought the boy and girl were friends, which is why she had a fishing pole and wanted to go fishing with them. But the dad was telling his son we can't leave her behind, as in she can't stay at their house alone, they need to take her home. And when he said son I know you don't want her to go I thought that was like the son doesn't want the girl to go home. He wants her to go fishing with him. Someday you'll change your mind, I thought was the Dad's way of saying like you know someday as you get older and things change you'll grow apart, because that's just kind of a common thing that happens in life. Of course that can be difficult to explain to a young kid so it's just easier to say you know someday you'll change your mind. And then the next part singing about Jimmy Tommy and Bo, I thought was like send them home but don't take the girl, because he had a childhood crush on her and wanted her to stay with him. So then I thought like the rest of the song was kind of like in a way proving his dad wrong that what might have seemed like a silly childhood crush didn't fall apart as they got older, it only got stronger.

You guys got to listen to the song called The Little Girl sang by John Michael Montgomery... Listen to it very clearly it will put years in your eyes, I know Lex will and who knows Brad too

It is not a sad song. The girl/woman at the end does not die in childbirth. The song does make it a bit ambiguous, but the woman with the fishing pole at the end of the video is the little girl from the beginning of the song.

First verse is a little boy not wanting to take girl fishing because he don't like girls and dad telling him when he's older he'll like girls.
